Destiny Gameplay Premiere

I've never been able to get into Halo. I was not impressed by this during the reveal. The gameplay demos and interviews during this E3 have seemed interesting to me so far though.

That said, the people here saying this looks like Snorederlands are making me nervous and wondering if I'm missing the obvious.

Exactly my thoughts... except I loved Borderlands.

Game demo looked fantastic. I didn't really have any expectations on the title, if anything if was probably not great due to not being a fan of Halo and you know... Actibvision, but the demo sold me and I'm very much hyped for this game now.
 
To me, the similarity to Borderlands ends with the loot aspect of both games.

Destiny looked like a Bungie shooter with built in co op. The movement and gun play looked classic bungie. The AI was more reactive, with enemies flanking you, falling back, etc. In Borderlands enemies just run at you/attack you in waves, there is never allot of reactivity. There wasn't allot of sandboxy stuff but I saw in one of their interviews that it will be an emphasis.

This has probably been asked somewhere but does anyone know how many people can group together for some co-op experience in Destiny? Can I play with 3 others? 5 others?

One of the things I am most hopeful for next gen is co-op modes with more people than the standard 4 of this gen.

I don't think they've said how many people can be in "fire teams" or groups. They did say that they're experimenting with how many people can be involved in public events (like the fight with walking tank in the demo) and that right now it's anywhere from 5-20 players.

I didn't know they were called fire teams. based on that info, I searched around and found this article saying they are only 3:

So, if I want to co-op with my friends, I can only get 2 of them with me for an entire evening... :( dang...
 
Watching the Machinima interview now. I know this is unlikely, but I'm really hoping for cross-platform play. That way I have the option of getting it on 360 without missing out. I know it's unlikely though.
 
Yeah, fire teams being limited to three people sucks. Four or five would be nice.

It is currently speculated. I write over there and it is what we think is going to happen as everything we've seen is in teams of three. The final game could have much more than that.

I'm hoping that's just because they want to show the different classes. 4-5 seems like it would be best to me.

Well Bungie kind of was. When they announced the game, Jason talked about "turning the shooter genre on it's head" again like they did with the original Halo.

Given that and their general secrecy about what the game even is and how it functions and plays (after they announced it), they did kind of build of this idea that it was something different and new to shooters. So, I understand that people are underwhelmed to find out that it appears to be 'Borderlands evolved'.

Don't get me wrong, that kind of game appeals to me, I expect to have a ton of fun with it (that Sessler interview got be quite excited for it).

Even in your examples I still don't see it. Turning the shooter genre on its head doesn't have to be revolutionary. It could be more of an evolutionary twist. Besides, we haven't seen the full scope of the game yet.
 
I cannot contain my excitement, I preordered my PS4 today and put like 20 bucks on Destiny (it's all I got right now, 120 at gamestop is mean to my debit card)
 
Still looking forward to it but I gotta say I was disappointed by the gameplay. Looked generic as hell and just not fun in the way Halo was. I blame ADS.
 
I was impressed for the first few minutes, but when the Public Event began then everything started to click for me. Even though it was a limited preview, I caught a glimpse of what they are trying to do with Destiny.

And if they pull it off, it will be amazing.
 
This seems awesome. The whole going on SP and random people dropping in, the loot, the combat.

Lightning and draw distance looks amazing, open maps. YES!

Ive said before but Killzone looks a bit boring compared to this. Saying this as a KZ2/3 fan.

I thought it looked pretty good, but the more I watch it the more worried I get about the ADS and bloom mechanics on display. I have yet to play a game with ADS where they didn't drive me nuts.

I think it's more hub and spoke than open world. Worlds may be broken into discrete locations or regions, in which you are free to roam. At least, that's my understanding so far.

We don't know the size of the maps, but Destiny is confirmed to have competitive multiplayer. PvP will take place in clearly marked zones and so be completely separate from the co-op/story game. Other than that, they haven't said. I assume there would be a range of arenas, from large to small, though.
 
I expect Destiny's world to be arranged a lot like Borderlands 2, but on a much larger scale. Several HUB areas, with lots of more linear spokes. Sometimes those spokes will be overlapping and interconnected, though, which will help each offshoot area to feel more cohesive. And I still think we'll get to visit more than one planet -- how that will work, I have no clue.

How are worlds in MMOs typically set up? I've never played one. I wonder if Bungie will draw from that model in how they arrange their world.

ADS as a mechanic makes a shooter more console friendly. Analog sticks aren't as precise as a mouse for aiming, so they offer two different settings that allow much slower (and hence more precise) controls while aiming down the sites. This is also coupled with making hip firing very inaccurate thus forcing you to use ADS if you actually want to hit anything. By doing this a lot of purists feel like it slows the game down too much, and turns it into whack a mole as opposed to the Quake 3 glory days of run and gun.

I personally really like the mechanic, but I can see the arguments against ADS. It certainly has changed the FPS genre pretty drastically.

I will also chime in and say I can't wait wait for Destiny and Titanfall!

Anyone notice Jones and Staten talking as they came off stage?

Jones: Jesus Christ!
Staten: Well it had to happen sometime.

Were they talking about Jones being onstage? Or was it to do with the technical problems at the start where they had to switch to another (prerecorded?) feed?

Also

Noticed in the last linked interview (machinima?) that they saw your customised and upgraded weapons can be taken into the competitive multiplayer. Could be interesting with balance. Makes me sceptical it will be a halo esque area shooter and more likely an extension of the gameplay see in the single player / co-op stuff.

They have confirmed Earth, the moon, Mars and Venus so far as well as customisational space ships so we will be travelling around.

Based on what we've seen of Destiny, it seems like we might not be getting the inaccurate hip fire that necessitates ADS use in other games where it is present; the 'hip fire' in this game looks pretty similar to non-scoped guns in halo, with a targeting reticule that seems to allow for the possibility of actually hitting things. So they might be going with a 'best of both worlds' kind of approach, which I can deal with.

Really looking forward to this, and I have to say, as much as I understand where the Borderlands comparisons are coming from, I think that many in this thread are taking the comparison too far (as in "this is just borderlands"). Just because it is the obvious reference point for 'shooter with randomized loot' doesn't mean that equating any game with that point of similarity to it in such absolute terms is anything but reductive and a little obnoxious.

I mean, really all these first person shooters are still just 'doom-games' right?
 
Bungie has always been incredible. The closest they have come to letting me down was Halo 2, and that was an amazing game.


This Destiny gameplay reveal got me more hyped than I thought it would.


Glad to see the visuals are getting the bump they needed for next gen platforms.

I just noticed the stick labels are reversed.

I like how they're mapping the powers by making them combination presses or holds instead of having people fumble with menus to swap. Other than that, it's basically the Call of Duty control scheme but with melee mapped to RB instead of the right stick. Something else we can infer from this: Two standard weapons plus a heavy weapon? I'd assume that Thunderlord in the demo was in the heavy weapon slot, as was that rocket launcher. Unless they want to go for four slots and haven't shown any heavy weapons, I guess.

ADS is an interesting one. From the very little we've seen gameplay demos, it doesn't really seem to slow the player down all that much, which is usually one of the really significant problems that ADS brings to a shooter. As for the visibility issue it creates, I wouldn't be terribly surprised if a lot of the scopes in the game acted like the Halo zoom, where instead of the greyed out edges of the screen you'd get the edges of the physical scope. A lot depends on the pace of the encounters, though, so I think I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt even if it isn't my preferred mechanic.

It's so good to finally see shooting and aiming being on the triggers on the DualShock.
 
Just a couple of powers in use at once? And one passive, i assume glide is an extension to jumping.
Perhaps we change our chosen powers like in Diablo 3?

Yes, i don't think i could handle shooting with a shoulder button. So used to Xbox controllers.
There will be other control schemes probably though.
