PS3 2.0 firmware details posted [confirmed?]

Ironically, this morning I started making custom user icons (official PSN template) for PS3 owners, now they'll be useable on the PSN as well... perfect timing!

Seeing this on the PSN ftw:

:lol, I'm using the same pic as my avatar for my main account.

Well, if XMB ingame is added than that's basically the end of my concern. Of course I can see some important problems still like 720p Blu-ray playback but it doesn't concern me & my tv.

The source of the firmware 2.0 update is http://presscenter.playstation.com (login required) so it's legit.

People with press passes have gone on there and said that there is nothing.

Excitement...growing...

...must...not hype...self..too much.

Seriously though, this'd be huge.

Of course, the only other issue is the release date.

Being able to summon the XMB during gameplay is nice, but they really need to address DVD upscaling and 720p BD playback. Harrison promised DVD upscaling some time ago and it's still absent.

Phil Harrison let slip that the PS3 was soon going to feature DVD upscaling.

"I think in order to engender trust in our users, we have to share some things that might be not quite perfect, but are ready to give you an indication of what's coming. So we could say, "You know, we're not sure when it's coming, but we're going to have DVD upscaling on Playstation 3." There you go. There's a scoop for you."

If done correctly, no it isn't.

i've read a fair amount on the subject, and apparently a good motion-adaptive deinterlacer will sometimes halve resolution in parts of the picture to eliminate combing artifacts -- there's a perception that a good deinterlacer always weaves, but from what i've read, you get the best results by selectively bobbing and weaving within a given frame. so even a good job of deinterlacing 1080i -- and some tvs don't do a good job -- will be inferior to a merely competent job of downscaling 1080p. maybe not perceptibly inferior, but inferior.

I may be wrong, but isn't that for stuff that is actually filmed at 1080i?

Why would there be any combing artifacts when recombining 1080p frames for 30fps and less material?

Maybe I need to read up more on it, but if something was properly interlaced ... I don't see why deinterlacing should be difficult other than the speed needed to do it in real-time.

Lovely how they edited the original post but left the hunderds of quotes that came after untouched.

I'm actually content with the image quality of bluray so 720p support isn't as high in the list of wants, I'd love it if they managed 720/1080i/p upscaling for DVD's though. My question though, why would this be 2.0 allready wasn't the last one 1.8 or 1.7 ?

Version 2.0 should have home support in it.

They jump versions for major updates just like the PSP. Home will most likely be 3.0.

you could be right, actually -- i'll think about it after the basketball game :lol

Wallpaper - Check
Arbitrary photo as avatar - Check
In-Game XMB - Check
Upscaled DVD's - NO!?!

That's my biggest gripe at the moment as I don't have an upscaling DVD and while my HDTV does have VGA, I can't see paying for a VGA cable for something I should get for free.

All in all, a very nice little update. I understand the < .5% of folks who have a 720p only set being pissed, but it's not an issue of any kind for my SXRD.

I'm not seeing anything about this after logging in.

The latest info on firmware I can find relates to the 3/20 update. Not saying this isn't legit--different logins have different levels of access--but I'm not finding anything on my end.

Yeah we're thinking it was removed when it broke. The original post was deleted too.
That... would make sense. Hah, I wonder if it's part of Gamers Day.

Oh yea, I'd really like the ability to upscale DVDs as well. Thanks Sony.

Man who cares about DVD upscaling and 720p Blu-ray watching in comparision to XMB use during gameplay?

Those of us that bought the PS3 as a blu ray player first and game player 2nd

I am not sure about it. I don`t know, if it would provide all the XBL functionality. See the posts of recklessmind.
Bit I still hope for it.

To be fair I was only talking about myself and the only thing I did on live that I can't on PS3 was check what my friends were doing after they signed on and then send a message or two while I was playing a game which would most likely be the main reason to open up the XMB.

BEST UPDATE YET

Sony have really answered the call w/ this update.

Most of the things we wanted are included.

Now the only thing I want is:

PS3 Games w/ 1080i Support (please, do it through firmware or start requiring devs to include 1080i support)

That's it..ohh and a browser upgrade wouldn't hurt

Hot hot hot!

I bet it's not true. Too much good PS3 news for one thread.

Sony: "Ok we've been keeping it under wraps but we're ready to roll out with 2.0; in-game XMB, wallpaper, all the rest of it. A lot of features. Things are finally looking up guys."

PS3 Owners: "Ya ya ya ya!"

God: "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I WILL NOT HAVE THIS."

SCEA pulled the original post. Would they care if it was fake?
They might if it was getting people excited for nothing.

Buuut, playing it out like it's true I hope the RSS features are at least as comprehensive as what's on the PSP. Which, in the PS3's case would mean they'd be adding some sort of wake on demand mechanism in order to allow the sleep timer funtionality that the PSP has for grabbing content from RSS feeds. Or, since they've implemented background downloading now, I guess they could just have it check for new content on a feed and download it in the background.

And I really do hope they go one better than the PSP and at least support normal RSS news feeds as well.

o [Dynamic Normalizer] has been added as an option under [Sound Settings].

I'm not too savvy on sound terminology, but does this mean no more scrambling for the volume control on the splash screens?

man i hope these features are true. If so then the list of firmware update needs drops drastically.

The DVD upscaling and BluRay 720p support aren't an issue for me once i bought my new 1080p TV, so i'll have to think what else i'd want :D

god i hate that! LOL

motorstorm is the worst!

jesus tell me about it. EVERYTIME.

*turn on ps3 late night, put in motorstorm...*

*DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEH..DUUUUUUUUUUUUH..DUUUU-DUUUUUUUUUU (DU DEEE DOO...DU DEE-DEE-DEELO)*

Already they should be working on animated/slideshow wallpapers. I really expected this out of the PS3 very early on. A lot earlier than this.

I hope this doesn't mean it removes the punch while you play in-game though.
I hate volume normalisation (at least in music releases).

WOW KILLER UPDATE!! I was going to get a PS3 sooner or later but this makes me want one NOW! They covered everything!
I think

Now all that's left is RUMBLE.

Fixes any concerns or updates I had in mind. The upscaling doesn't affect me.

I second that.

This update is awsome, listening to MP3s while playing anyone? I mean if you can access the XMB during a game...maybe?

They do not state that that is possible. It requires a bit of work in the games and I'm not sure you tag which sound you play is music and which is not.

As much as i would love this, they need to add playlists or options to select specific tracks or entire folders to add as a playlist type thing. It really sucks right now, i dont like listening to entire albums at once, and creating folders that in effect act as playlists is annoying.

If that list is true, holy cow, awesome update.
