So I'm confused. I bought the Collector's Edition back in the day when FF XIV got released, does this mean I'll get a free copy of the game when ARR is released?

I might buy the new CE as well :p

yes you'll get to download ARR's game client for free, you are still subject to monthly fees though.

A question regarding the beta (which is down till the next weekend, but oh well):

if someone has their square enix account with the registration code (the 20 digits one) activated, can you gameshare the ps3 download from someone who used their ps3 beta code so that you can download the ps3 version, and then switch to your psn account to bind the square enix and psn one?

as someone who's played through all beta weekends, I'm very excited. They've tightened a lot of things up, optimized most of the combat animations (all animations). But they've kept the unskippable cut scenes which is unfortunate (especially for beta weekends when you have so little time to play).

excited for August, still subbing.

Have to wait until next weekend, fudge.

Zeta and I from yesterday. See you next week, sis.

I was wondering if the game was better optimized since the last phase. I got an i7-920 and a GTX670 and was still hitting around the 45FPS, was kinda suprised seeing that.

You do get the new game for free yes, but obviously you have to keep the sub up.

I had the new CE preordered, but I cancelled it for now, as I'm fine just having access to the game itself. I'll get the CE when it lands on PS4.

I really enjoyed the game this weekend, but I hate how it seems to be 99% single player. Is there a point where you start needing to go out in groups to be able to kill the normal monsters wandering the land, not just instanced boss fights or dungeons? Do parties get to help with all main story quests after a certain point?

So far the game seems less an MMO than a single player game with multiplayer minigames (like dungeons). I understand we'll never get the likes of FFXI again, but in that game by the time you were level 10 you pretty much had to group to keep leveling, grouping earlier still helped speed up the early game, and main story quests were definitely something done as parties, with only the cutscenes being solo.

Really enjoyed playing this weekend. The combat feels so much more fast paced and enjoyable. My only gripes are the whole intro sequence not being skippable, and running around town at the starting zone trying to get all the initial quests done. It felt like it took over an hour to actually start playing the damn game.

I know what you mean, that bugged me too. Afterwards, around level 4 when I really started to quest out in the countryside (in my case outside Limsa Lominsa) it really turned around. I'm actually anticipating playing Final Fantasy 14... How the hell did that happen?

That team did a hell of a job turning that ship around.

You can go anytime in a party and fight monsters. If you look around there are a ton of NM (notorious monsters) roaming the land that you can fight. Also don't be fooled by the NM's a lvl 10 NM is much harder than a normal lvl 10 monster for example. Also keep in mind not all the content or areas are in the game.

When areas like Castrum Novum, Castrum Occidus, Beastman Stronghold open up you will quickly see how important a group will be needed. There are also plenty of raids where you'll need more than one party and quests for things like completing your AF gear all require parties.

They don't want people to skip anything right now as they need people checking to make sure that everything is working. Different people have different rigs and setups they need to make sure that it works for everyone. They did allow skipping in phase 2 but the buttons and stuff were all broken. You could drag the skip button all over the screen.

Holy shit, this was only up for Friday and Saturday are you even serious? Well fuck, I would have made time to play yesterday if I had known, didn't play enough to form a really good opinion and try to get used to the stupid map. Next weekend it is then!

For party content:

Guildhests
16-18 instanced raids at launch starting at level 15. (most are required to be beaten to progress with the main story).
Crystal Tower & Bahamut's Labyrinth (both supposedly 24 player raids)
Primals (Ifrit, Garuda, Titan, Good King Moggle Mog XII, Ramuh)
High level FATEs including Primal FATEs (only Odin announced so far)
PvP

The Duty Finder should be tested in two weeks that automatically matches with players across servers for content.

there are two more test sub-phases, look forward to next friday

The only grip I have so far is the way most of the instances are behind 'quest walls' (Needing to do a quest before entering)

And while I wouldn't normally have a problem with this because I'm a sucker for interesting quest chains (Much more interesting then one-and-done type quest) it made getting people for groups that much harder because once you thought you found a healer etc. you then have the wonderful chance to hear "Opps I haven't done that quest yet."

Beta's down on Sundays? Aw, that's the best day for me to play the damn thing! I have classes all day on Saturday and work until 5 on Friday.

Well, I made it to level 12 as a Lancer. Was really hoping to get to Dragoon soon. Is that level 15?

In the release version, Jobs will be unlocked at level 30. As the quests haven't been implemented, you won't be able to get them during Beta.

Well most cliffs i've run into you can jump over, but the only thing off the beaten path i've found doesnt seem to require jumping, its just easier to get there. Most of the stuff that the game doesnt let you jump off seems to be areas where you wouldnt really go anyway/ are just instance entrances. Then again, not being able to swim (at the moment) is probably another reason. I havent run into anything that you needed to jump to get to though. Going off the beaten path to find FATE notorious monsters does seem like it'll be rewarding though.

If the latter half of 1.0 with the primal battles was any indication, 2.0 should be really good since they have much more freedom.

I don't know friend, I was running into invisible walls everywhere. Like someone put some serious time and effort into walling off anything and everything that looks like it would be fun to get on top of, or jump though. And as a side effect ended up hitting areas that look like you could just walk though and encounter normally in game play as well. Here is an easy example that I'm sure a lot of people ran into. Right by the adventures guild in Gridania there is a hill that has an opening right to the bar area that looks like you should be able to just walk though. Nope, gotta always go all the way down and around to get in. How about some stairs down a cliff? Can jump off the cliff, but don't you dare try jumping to the side of the stairs. Stuff like that is all over.

Probably not but it still could happen. If its like any of the previous phases where they had an npc that would say jump you from 1 -15 they could implement that. The previous phases they added this each weekend so you didn't have to keep grinding each time. They may just add a quest or something that auto gives you the jobs as I would think they would want you to try out the attacks and stuff.

so how does FATEs work?

can anyone initiate FATEs?

They appear "randomly" in the world and may or may not be based on how many people are in a zone to determine how often they appear. The ones that need to be activated by talking to someone, anyone can activate, but most just appear and start with no one initiating them.

Oh...my hype is kind of deflated then. I was really hoping to be able to play as a Dragoon. The normal classes are kind of boring. :[

One quibble that I almost forgot to mention: I never did figure out how you control which hand your weapon is in; does anyone know how to do it? My Marauder was a righty and I couldn't seem to undo that.

I'm determined to play this game as the lefty that I am: I'll gladly be any race, any gender, any age, but I'm tired of always having to be a right-hander in games. My avatar(s) will swing their weapons left-handed or I'll be a mage and not carry a weapon.

It will be disappointing indeed if, like in Demon's Souls, you get to customize every tiny tidbit about your character, with millions of permutations of character features, but only one possible dominant hand.

Yoshi answered this. Everything is right handed only as it would be a pain to animate cutscenes.

Well, considering the speed of leveling, I guess weekend only tests make sense. I was level 15 before I logged out last night.

Kinda sucks though, I had bouth my storyline quest and my lancer quest to finish.

Oh well. We'll try again next weekend.

I've never really been in a beta before is this how they usually work? The servers are only up once in a while? This sucks cause I'm going to a wedding in Georgia this weekend.

What!? Cutscenes?

That's absolutely ridiculous. Having four different races, each with many dozens of skin tones and hair colors and lip sizes and tattoo positions and every other variation you can think of doesn't affect their precious cutscenes, but differing weapon hands somehow does?

Wow.

(I still like the game, but that's a serious disappointment.)

Everyone is RH only. IIRC the issue was/is that every last cutscene using your character would have to have a LH and RH version if they allowed you to choose, which is a pretty costly thing to add because that can often change the base positioning and perspective used to view yourself and the various characters interacting with you. You can swap models out programatically, but believable animations are a different beast because of how they're intended to build on each other.

EDIT: I'm so zetta slow

Couldn't they just have some jobs/races be all-lefty and others be all-righty? There are going to be changes in positioning based on job and race anyway.

Or just have them hold the weapons in the right hand in the cut scenes, but during the game, have them hold weapons in whichever hand you put them in.

Linkshells have a limit of 128 users but the Free Company system, which is the guild system for the game, has a limit of 512 users! We were getting close to running out of space for GAF in the LS so this is great news!

Teknoman mentioned that the requirements to start a Free Company are 15,000 gil, level 25, and three members.

I think the point is that right now, everyone can make the exact same motion from probably one or two standardized camera angles and it will work. LH/RH means you'll have to add more camera angles, possibly shoot from completely different angles if the scene has obscuring/clipping issues, armor models might need to be changed to accommodate LH motions, NPCs can't do something as simple as shake your hand without needing a second animation if your dominant hand is different, etc. It just adds up if you can't throw it all under one bus.

Part of the reason why you're actually able to have the cutscenes currently run with such a wide variety of characters/sizes is that the animators can assume they are only ever going to move on one set path.

EDIT: LH-dominant base characters could have worked if they'd done that from the beginning. Maybe petition for them to do that for whatever race they plan to add...

I tried this game when the original beta came out, and disliked it strongly. Only every like healing, and iirc, I couldn't even figure out how to really cast in the beta, so gave up on the game/wrote it off. Then I got into the beta this weekend, and got up to like lv15 and saw a bit of the systems. Man is this a fun game.

Put more hours into WoW and raiding than I feel comfortable admitting at times(and have the mounts to show for it), but with the guild poofing, was considering a change anyway. Just have to wonder how customizable the UI and stuff is, and if there's mouseover macros and stuff like that in it. Not to mention, what the end-game is like.

Yeah, from the looks of it; regular linkshells are basically glorified Chat Channels now, and the Free Company is your endgame type linkshell. I joined one yesterday, not a fan of the default text color but I'm assuming ill be able to change that (I never tried.)

Rolled a MRD and did some exploring into the early morning hours before the beta went down. Limsa Lominsa was absolutely stunning, especially some of the areas in Upper La Noscea and Outer La Noscea. Completely blown away.

Limsa Lominsa >= Gridania > Ul'dah

You can customize the chat channel colors.

Yes, because they would then take the week to fix the bugs that was found over the testing period and possibly make improvements based on the feedback gathered so far. They aren't going to patch things constantly by keeping the beta up 24/7. The subsequent phases usually last longer than before as well.

I played the game for about six hours. I didn't really like the dull/washed out artstyle. It's a shame cause the models and landscapes look great but the art on them is just ugly. That's a pretty big problem for me at least. The intro cutscene was way too long and I didn't really like that it had no voice acting. I really love the cutscenes in TSW/SWTOR and here they are just annoying. The opening quest were really boring. Having you run around a hub for nearly an hour is a really bad way to introduce people to your game. When I finally got around to getting a quest to go somewhere the map turned out to be a huge annoyance. I understand how to use it but I just don't like it at all. Maybe that's more of a problem with how the world is structured. Combat was standard mmo stuff. Right click and press 1-9 till monster is dead. I don't think mmos are going to be able to get away with that anymore in the future. Hopefully active combat takes off big time cause the old way is just boring. Some of the ui interactions could have been better and done in less clicks, like filling lanterns or the handover quest. So far my first impressions are very underwhelming. I will try it again whenever the next test is going on.

While I personally love SWTOR, I'm torn on voice acting because it costs the developers so much more and delays new content. That said, if you're gonna have a bunch of chatty cutscenes, you NEED voices because it gets really dull, really quickly. Otherwise they need to be trimmed way down.
