Wii U Games 2013

I got my Wii U for free but damn I'm feeling terrible about it. The only thing on this list for 2013 that interests me is WW HD since most of the other 3rd party titles I can play on my PS3 and the other fist party titles don't interest me at all. I hate to think that the next time I can get some real usage of it is in 2014. MH3U and WW HD can only keep me going for so long. A little bit of me dies inside whenever I look at it and see it collect dust...

I could start this epic adventure, because I'm really curious about eshop indie games..but I have no graphic skills at all, so would just be a list (with link to youtube trailers?)

I think there definitely should be a thread dedicated to the Wii U eShop indies. I don't have a Wii U yet, (waiting for a price drop) but I'm definitely interested in some of the games I've been hearing about.

I have some minor ability with Photoshop, so I might be able to help you with some of it. I'm sure other people would be willing to contribute as well. :o

Of all the games announced/hinted this far, I will buy

Bayonetta 2
FE x SMT
Mario Kart 8
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
New Super Mario Bros. U
New Super Luigi U
Next Zelda
Pikmin 3
Super Mario 3D World
Super Smash Bros
Sonic: Lost World
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD
Wonderful 101 ( The game that sold me on Wii U )
X

Anyone wanna make recommendations on eshop? It's better if they are exclusive on the system.

eShop? Toki Tori 2. I think I wrote a detailed explanation as to why it's awesome and especially awesome on Wii U on the last or second to last page of this thread.

And don't ignore ZombiU, one of the most unique survival horror games and best showcases for the WiiU's asymmetric gameplay.

I'll be getting:
New Super Luigi U
The Wonderful 101
The Legend of Zelda: WWHD
Sonic: Lost World
DKC: Tropical Freeze
Super Mario 3D World
Shovel Knight

Maybe:
Pikmin 3
Mario & Sonic 2014
AC4
Watch Dogs

Haven't been posting in regular Wii U threads lately and noticed the satisfaction thread was closed. So is this the main thread now?

Anyways, I just ordered an extra nunchuk for Pikmin 3 multiplayer. I never felt the need for 2 nunchuks (have 3 wiimotes --2 of them WM+ able) during the Wii era, but now I think I need it for Pikmin.

I also bought a Wii U Pro Controller. It's $39 right now on Amazon, but I'm afraid it might go and stay up soon when more games come out and demand increases, so I felt I need to buy it now. It's going to be mainly for 3D World, X, and SSB.

Did I make a mistake buying these accessories? It's really expensive buying Nintendo peripherals...

I don't see anything wrong there. Perfectly reasonable.

Heavily considering getting a Wii U. Really want Donkey Kong coming later this year and others.

Are you guys glad you bought the system, despite the issues?

I hated it in January and February.
But Nintendo Land, Zombi U and Mario U were simply great as launch titles, and Lego City and MHUltimate did a great job entertaining me in March and April.

Being fully BC in terms also of accessories, I was able to enjoy it also in multiplayer without any additional cost (I owned three WiimotePlus/Nunckak/Classic Controller for the Wii).

I enjoyed also some good eshop games as Trine, Nano Assault, Toki Tori and Runner2, and I was able to get some multiplayer games for cheap that I enjoyed a lot thanks to the Offtv (Injustice) or other Gamepad features (Batman City that I skipped on PS3 for whatever reason I don't remember).

And Miiverse is great.

Finally summmr titles are coming and among Luigi, Pikmin, W101, Zelda WW, DK, Mario and some other minor stuff (if you are interested in party game both Wario and Party could be funny) or multiplatform games with interesting gamepad uses (such as Splinter Cell or Rayman or Batman Origin...maybe Watchdogs?) it should see a good flow of games (leading into early 2014 considering their E3 announcements), considering also the eshop

Probably you noticed that almost every game I listed is exclusive to the system, and that's one of the main reason I'm happy about it despite the obvious flaws (the OS still need speed improvements, various multiplatform games are and will be missing, there were too many delays in earlu 13 and so on)

So, yes I'm happy about the Wii U, right now.

Honestly, I haven't really had many issues, if any. I knew what to expect going in though, so that may have had something to do with it. Even the slow OS issue that many complained about just didn't really affect me much at all. The only time I would get upset was going to the settings menu, and I've only done that a total of like 3 times since owning the console. Games wise, it certainly could be better, but it has a nice handful of software to really grab a hold of you. In your situation in particular, you will have something to play pretty much every month from now until Spring 2014 at least. Zombi U is definitive proof that the gamepad is an innovative controller, and titles like NSMB:U show it's great as a standard controller with the added ability of off-screen play. There are days I go without ever changing my TV input to interact with my Wii U, and it helps a lot when you are just wanting to download something from the eShop, browse Miiverse or browse the net(which is fucking ace I might add).

The one thing I wish they would speed up would be TVii. That shit can be annoyingly slow at times, but watching a show (I love to watch WWE Raw on there) and posting comments along with others is surprisingly fun.

So long as you know the bulk of what you play might come from Nintendo themselves and third party support will be rare with a few gems, you should be fine. If that sounds good, go for it.

Absolutely. As long as people are fully aware of the many issues and know what to expect, it is a really nice console.

If you are fine with the following:
  • Slow CPU, so slow OS etc
  • DX10 equivalent GPU, so 1 generation behind today's gpus
  • Extremely limited 3rd party support
  • Clunky, kinda useless tablet controller that even Nintendo doesn't utilize worth a damn

The for sure pick one up. It really is so nice to have an HD Nintendo console even if it isn't cutting edge or whatever, you know cuz NINTENDO GAMEZ! <--not sarcasm, btw.

Thanks for the responses, guys. Yeah, it's unfortunate about third parties. With that said, there does seem to be a fair amount of exclusives that I want.

How is the controller's battery life? Heard it's quite short. I'm positioned quite close to my TV so am just wondering if I could just play with it plugged in all the time. Provided it's possible to buy a longer cable?

Thanks.

Ahem... I'm pretty sure that last post was a troll post or just some fanboy.

OS ain't that slow anymore and it will get faster this summer again (of course a slow OS has nothing to do with the "slow CPU" and is more about coding but I thought that was a given). I wouldn't worry about that

The controller isn't clunky nor useless of course.
The battery life is indeed short though. You may want to pickup the new one Nintendo is releasing (in Japan for the moment) later.

Third parties, well, what WiiU is gettin' is in the OP. I guess one would pick up a U for Zelda\Mario\Smash\X and stuff like that.

Of course you can play with it plugged in

You can just have it plugged in to any old wall outlet while playing, doesn't have to be the console. The only issue I have with the tablet battery is that when the console and tablet are off, the battery still drains.

The pro controller by the way, has 80 hours of battery life. The only downside with that is you have to plug it into the console and the console has to be on to charge it.

nope, just honest opinion. ymmv of course.

Battery is not so long, but you can play while plugged. And: use the charging base. It's damn useful. You can simply put the pad on that in every non-playing minute, and it will recharge.
Pro Controller on the ohter hand last 80 hours, I think ;p
Never heard of a longer cable, but Nintendo is launching a new official battery pack for the Gamepad in July, I think.

Eh... you can use any USB outlet charger (your phone's for example) to charge the Wii U Pro.

Come on....
OS has nothing to do with the speed of the CPU. It was rushed out and is being improved. XBone OS is apparently pig slow at the moment. Is that because of the CPU? No, it's because its unfinished.

Also, interested to hear why the gamepad is 'clunky'. Do you mean its unwieldy (too big) - I normally associate clunkiness with being slow and I find the pad to be very comfortable and responsive. Each to his own I guess.

Yes absolutely. For me personally, there are almost no issues I wouldn't have elsewhere anyway or that I know will be fixed soon (aside from region locking I guess).

Yes. No regrets! I love the gamepad, if not for anything else then at least for off-tv play. I've played a lot of Monster Hunter, New Super Mario Bros U (now expansion), ZombiU and the occasional Nintendo land with my wife/kids. There's also a lot of fun to be had with eshop titles, and playing virtual console titles like SMW and Super Metroid on the gamepad is the ultimate way of experiencing these games for me again nowadays.

With Pikmin3, W101, Sonic Lost World, Windwaker, Donkey Kong and SM3DW all coming up this fall/holidays I'm good.

my wii u get list will probably consist of the following:

nsmbu
nslu
pikmin 3
sonic: lost world
the wind waker hd
dkctf
rayman legends
watch_dogs

and then the next month would have 3d world. really banking on a price drop or good black friday deal, though. and eight games is just about right for owning a console. won't have a shortage of platformers either.

So play the multiplatform games on Wii U, they are better there anyway! You will never want to play Assassins Creed or CoD without gamepad again if you try it :)

But the charging light doesn't come on when I do that and the instructions instruct one to plug it into the console?

Whatever the reason, if feels sluggish, about on par with the PS3 imo and potential customers should be aware of that.

yup, unwieldy, not the other things. Screen with stylus is actually more responsive than my nexus10.

Here are some pix to show what I mean about the shape:

Pro controller, 210g, fits my hands perfectly.

Tablet controller, 500g, not that comfy for me.

Comfyness for me: Wiimote*Nunchuck>Gamepad>360/Pro Controller

A little more stealth would've worked better, you just got way too eager after the first paragraph - and everyone can see it.

I have arthritis and the Gamepad is a real bummer for me for this reason. <3 Pro Controller.

How are you holding it?

I always sit kind of like this:
edwardhopper_morningsun.jpg
(it's really hard to find a proper pic of someone sitting like this lol)

With the GamePad resting on my lap. Weight is never an issue since my hands aren't carrying it.

When I play my hands are supporting it, but if your elbows are propped up at least you're doing it wrong. The same would actually go for any controller. I haven't found it to be a problem in the least.

No you didn't. Controllers are and have always been expensive, but 39 for the Wii U Pro Controller is great. It's a damn fine controller. I've also bought all my accesories a couple of weeks ago, because I knew that at the end of the year, when Nintendo starts their christmas marketing Wii U reboot, and with all the great games coming out, the demand for accessories will go up and the prices, too.

Slow CPU means nothing if you don't count the GPU and all the other console-internals. FACT is, early-in-life games like MK8, X, Super Mario 3D World, Smash all look great. Most of them run in 1080p and the majority of them even in 60fps.

About the GPU (which devs have said is quite powerful), what is your point? That the Wii U can't produce great graphics? How come MK8, X, Super Mario 3D and Smash Bros. look so good then (that's the general consensus)?

Let's not conclude "extrem limited 3rd party support" after only 7 month. In fact, all of Ubi Softs heavy hitters - Assassins Creed IV, Splinter Cell Blacklist, Watch-Dogs and Warner's Batman Arkham Origins, Disney Infinity and Activisions Call of Duty Ghost are coming this fall/winter.

The last point is just your personal opinion and doesn't - for example - reflect my personal opinion - that the Wii U Gamepad is great. And even if our both opinions were just subjective, nobody can conclude that the Wii U Gamepad is "useless", since it's "just" a great standard controller with extra functionality.

If we start aguing like that, like I've said many times, we might as well dismiss every console controller out there as "useless", which jus doesn't make sense.

Please understand.

Yeah that's what I'm afraid of, especially when more games that use the Pro controller come out later in the year. In fact, its price today jumped up to $45.

I didn't realise the console doesn't have ethernet?!

Has anybody got any experience of, good, reliable, LAN adapters for the system?

Have seen this official one on Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00BERB8B8/

Can't seem to find any reviews for it though.

Seems a big thing to leave out. As I am quite a distance away from the router and I'm sure many others are.

Heavily considering getting a Wii U. Really want Donkey Kong coming later this year and others.

Are you guys glad you bought the system, despite the issues?

I bought my Wii U 2 months ago and I'm 100% happy with my purchase and haven't had any issues with it.

Totally but it's a nintendo box for me. As a nintendo box, it's awesome. Everything else I just consider gravy on top. As long as you're ok with that, you should be pretty happy with it. There's some awesome stuff already on the system and great stuff on the horizon.

Glad there's finally a new Pikmin getting released. That plus a HD Wind Waker are good reasons to get a Wii U but I'm still hanging out for a new Metroid before I take the dive.

Holy shit, guys. Don't laugh but my kids and I just spent two hours playing Tank! Tank! Tank!

It's the dumbest fucking thing ever but TOOOOONS of fun. It's great, too, that it is F2P but it limits you in maps and modes and to only 3 games per 12 hour period. Seriously, though, I broke my rule and bought some DLC to remove the time limit and get new maps.

It really is lots of fun even if the graphics look last-gen. Really, it plays very much like Earth Defense Force. Big, dumb enemies in huge levels that look like 90's era 3d gaming Lego playsets and everything blows up really big and crappy.

Only bought the one map so far and I'm not sure if I'm gonna buy it piece-meal or just buy the original boxed copy off of Amazon. It really is terrific local MP for kids.

I tried to get them to play NSMBU and, even though they can hold their own in the Left 4 Dead games, the platforming was just not clicking with them. They were just kinda fucking around and dying a bunch so I remembered I heard that TTT went F2P and thought I would try it out with them.

Each player gets to take their picture and put silly costumes on it, and I don't need to tell you that kids love that kind of shit. Really, I know the game has a crappy reputation but I recommend you give it a go if you find a need for dumb, fun local MP.

So after months if thinking it over I've finally decided to go pick up a Wii U today. Going to get the deluxe edition with a copy of New Super Mario U, maybe a pro controller, and maaaaaaybe Lego City. I'm excited for this thing and the upcoming games. I've never played a Pikmin game before but viewing the trailer and it looked like a fun title.

And Wonderful 101 just looks flat out awesome.
