Nintendo to announce secret “brand-new types of games” for Wii U soon

New types of games...I'm guessing these will revolve around the tablet somehow?

Maybe some new way to combine the motion controls with the tablet?

Or maybe some completely new controller or interface accessory like the Oculus Rift--Virtual Boy reborn!!!

Whatever it is, it has to involve an accessory of some type.

Makes me wonder if their NFC game is some kind of card battle game that's more "card battle" than "traditional game." Get something where kids and adults will spend money on cards and have tourneys world wide etc, I could see them doing it.

i think the whole "not releasing media too early cuz we don't want our competitors copying us" applies mainly to hardware innovations.
maybe i'm wrong, but all of this 'fear' stemmed from the time nintendo unveiled the analog controller for n64; which sony copied and ultimately beat them to market with the release of the 'dualshock'.

but that doesn't apply to game software as much, imo.
i guess my point is, when it comes to advertising games, release media WAY in advance to grow mindshare (sorry just came from tW101 thread). rather than their current strategy of "lets start marketing the game one week before it comes out!"

Non sequitur. Pleasing the hardcore market would never be their ace in the hole. They needs a new Wii Sports-level experience.
I meant more for intraforum console wars ("Just you wait!"), but I admit it sounded like I meant the war for sales.

“When it comes to Wii, as ‘Wii Sports’ spread throughout the world at a sensational speed, some misunderstood that all Wii could do is enable them to play games by moving the Wii Remote. With Wii U, therefore, we planned to satisfy existing video game fans first and provide new surprises later.”

That is some furious retconning, my god

New types of games generally means it probably won't be a sequel.

How so? I'm not seeing Wii Sport U, Wii Play U or Wii Fit U released yet.

NSMB U, Pikmin 3, Donkey Kong Country, Wonderful 101, Sonic Lost World, plus others (including third party games) are coming out before Wii Fit U (in december I think)

Dat Iwata! Not taking the competition seriously!

I want this meme taken out back and shot once and for all. It's completely inane and inaccurate.

As far as the games are concerned I'm looking forward to hearing what they have to unveil. I wasn't surprised at what was shown at E3, but what did get shown was of very high quality. Looking forward to some surprise and quality as well this time around.
I think there are some legitimate times to use this theory such as Wii/DS. However, I remember one time Miyamoto hilariously said that about FLUDD in Sunshine.

I wish traditional games could do that too.
Then everyone will complain about gimmicks ruining their game and they dont understand why they had to force it on them and ruin their game see SMG, SS, MP3, MKWii, DKCR, TP, PH, ST, MPH, SFC, KI:U, etc. For the record some I agree with, some I don't.

Yep, and Iwata said something similar previously...

Iwata (June 2012) said:
"We do have ideas of what kind of software we will be releasing after those two periods, and Mr. Miyamoto as well as I are both directly involved in the development process. Those include both our traditional franchises and of course new propositions as well.

"However, because we are now in the era when similar proposals can be made by the others just one year after we introduced a brand-new hardware system proposal, please understand that we really can't say much about what else we are planning."

It's going to be a whole raft of cheap tablet games.

I think people are misinterpreting the "New types of games" line. I'd mark it as an odd translation. I'm certain he just means they're going to announce new games that people don't necessarily expect (Like Smash, Mario and Kart were).

Wait...who didn't expect Smash, Mario and MK?

I don't think it means that at all.

It's going to be based on this:-

The Nintendo Web Framework is a development environment based on WebKit technologies, supporting application development on the Wii U system using HTML5, JavaScript, and CSS. It also supports the Wii U GamePad controller, Wii Remote controllers, and JavaScript extensions such as video playback. With the Nintendo Web Framework, development times will be reduced and Wii U applications can be easily developed using common Web technologies. Combining the handy Wii U GamePad, the TV screen, and the Internet, the potential exists for the services and games you are developing to progress by leaps and bounds.

Cheap and quick to develop for tablet games.

Iwata explicitly states that this is not likely aimed at traditional players, so we'd do everyone a favor by tempering our expectations.

I can see the thread now:

"Nintendo's secret game is for fucking casuals, not the gritty Clu Clu Land reboot we hyped ourselves into believing existed!"

Who are the people who didn't expect a new Smash/3D Mario/Kart for Wii-U

I'm fairly certain that it will be a nfc enabled thing that will require you to buy things to advance/make it better that will be moderately successful in japan but west will care less than nothing

Oodama U

Control tropps with gamepad mic using voice commands.

Control Oodama ball with touchscreen.

Remember.You read it here first.

Wait...who didn't expect Smash, Mario and MK?

No one. Which is why they focused on those games at E3, as the article in the OP says explicitly. I take that to mean the games people aren't expecting, as in the games that aren't obvious (Smash, Kart and Mario are all obvious) will be announced later. I must not have been clear in my post as a few people seem confused as to what I meant.

I don't expect from "new types of games" beyond that. What are people expecting here? A Pokemon MMO? A huge spread of games that prove once and for all the Gamepad was a brilliant game design decision? Probably not. Just more, less obvious game releases.

I seriously doubt that is going to be used by Nintendo all that much. Google Maps was an exception. They're still working on the updates on Google Maps for Wii U so I guess there's possibility we'll see something similiar in future.

They have been saying this for a while now. No reason to get excited. It's pretty logical to think that if they had something truly revolutionizing cooking up then we wouldn't hear about it until relatively close to the release.

No they haven't. Provide links that they did or drop this fantasy.

I imagine it's their f2p title.

And perhaps some eShop stuff.. they haven't exactly done anything themselves, have they?

That would make sense, seeing how big a Nintendo F2P title would be (especially if it was at all Pokemon based) and putting some new stuff on eShop would take a lot of the risk in putting games out on shelves, but the way Iwata seems to talk about it implies that this is something that will move people to get the system, and I can't see an eShop title doing that.

I'm still waiting for that Wii Vitality Sensor we were promised in 2009.

Please be true. I want to see these guys at least try to give the controller a clever use. GC/GBA connectiviy type stuff is not impressive at all.

It seems something that will appeal to the mass casual gamer market, so I'm not getting my hopes up one iota.

That does raise my hopes though. All the strange quirky wii games I've enjoyed only had any shot at existing because the platform was already successful.

Also both wii sports games were genuinely fun.
