Orange Is the New Black is an American Netflix original comedy-drama series, created by Jenji Kohan (Weeds) and will be produced by Lionsgate Television. It is based on Piper Kerman's memoir Orange Is The New Black: My Year In a Women's Prison. All 13 episodes of Season 1 will be available on July 11, 2013. Described as 'Oz' meets 'The L Word', the show has been receiving great reviews so far, and Netflix has already renewed it for a 13-episode second season.

Please note that once the episodes are released, spoilers are fair game.
Orange Is the New Black revolves around Piper Chapman (Schilling), a New York woman, who is sent to a women's federal prison for possessing a suitcase full of drug money for Alex Vause (Prepon), an international drug smuggler and Chapman's one-time lover. Sentenced to serve a fifteen-month sentence, Chapman must survive the hardships of prison life, as she may have to be a different person to do so.

Trying to finish arrested development before this comes out, doesn't look like its going to happen as I'm still on S3. This show looks so good.
 
A couple more reviews:

- The Wall Street Journal: Jailhouse Awakenings
The performances by the likes of Mr. Biggs, Ms. Mulgrew and, especially, Ms. Schilling are so convincing, and the dialogue so sharp, that none of this feels like prurience for its own sake. That's also because the show doesn't lack for pathos or moments of moral seriousness, especially as the back stories of the secondary characters are gradually revealed.

1. Nico! Sobatka.

2. Nico's gf in S2 of The Wire has possibly the greatest rack I've ever seen. What ever happened to that actress.

3. WTF is going on with Jason Bigg's face in that little square up top?

4. Will watch.
 
I know two of those actresses, so I'll be watching it after I finish up the season of another show I'm currently plowing through. I've heard some pretty fantastic things about the show.

Unfortunately, we haven't found a good catch-all solution for discussing shows that Netflix is releasing. I thought having spoiler tags up for a month in the House of Cards thread was a little bit too much of a burden since most people were finished with it quickly, so we're going to give this a shot. If you'd like to create a thread with some sort of a schedule to it (watch two episodes per week, no spoilers past that?), please do. Some people seemed to enjoy a structured viewing experience with Arrested Development. Also, you can blind post comments in here and search for replies without reading the entire thread if you have questions about the show. As always, I'm open to any ideas GAF might have on how to better handle this. Thanks.

“This isn’t ‘Oz,’” the protagonist is told at the outset of “Orange is the New Black,” and mercifully, there isn’t an ass tattooed or eye gouged out in the previewed episodes. Indeed, Netflix’s new women-in-prison dramedy — picked up for a second season prior to this week’s premiere — bears a much closer resemblance to creator Jenji Kohan’s previous show, “Weeds,” with a more interesting assortment of characters and ornate narrative structure. Although messy and at times uneven, the one-hour series feels like a bull’s-eye with the sort of premium-cable space the distributor is eager to carve out with its original efforts.

Subbed. Looking very much forward to this. Trailer was good and the first three seasons of Weeds were very enjoyable until they forced it to go on for more seasons even though the story pretty much ran its course.
 
I'll check this out. Didn't realize Pablo Schreiber was in this. I enjoy what I've seen him in before (The Wire and Lights Out I guess... maybe something else).
 
Their original programming has been a dud so far. Not to say that the quality is terrible, but there's nothing in particular to write home about and I can't see anyone subscribing to Netflix to watch any of their shows.

I disagree. I loved House of Cards and Arrested Development got MUCH better by the last third.

I mean, I subscribe to Netflix anyway, but I certainly appreciate that they've got these original shows and I usually pay attention when they announce a new one.

That being said, Hemlock Grove looked terrible from the one episode I watched.

This pretty much proves my point. So we got one third of a great season out of Arrested Development and House of Cards (which is absolutely a tier below shows like Mad Men and Breaking Bad).

Is it a tier below Mad Men and Breaking Bad?

Especially when you make the more fair comparison of the 1st season of each compared to House of Cards?

Breaking Bad is the best show on air, but only got that status once it reached S4.

S1 of HoC is not really a tier below S1 of either MM or BB. Perhaps ever so slightly below, but not a tier.

Anyway, very hyped for this. S1-3 of Weeds were amazing, so I'm looking for that level of quality at least. Honestly as long as its better than Shitlock Grove.
 
Netflix has had good series and I think there are people out there who subscribe for the original content, but I agree that we haven't seen a top tier television series out of them yet. House of Cards was quality, don't get me wrong, but it's not up there with The Wire, Deadwood, Mad Men, Breaking Bad or any other show of that tier. We haven't seen a digital release series that has generated that kind of buzz yet. I hope we do though, because it would be the game changer.

IMO their only real dud has been Hemlock Grove, the other 3 series they've released (Lillyhammer, HOC, Arrested Development) have all been great. Hemlock Grove even had enough fans to get a season 2 renewal.

Lilyhammer was good, but that is such an off the wall, esoteric show. I can't imagine an awful lot of people watched that or even gave it a shot.

Netflix didn't advertise it well either. You literally have to know it exists and want to watch it because it doesn't show up in any of their menus. They will probably correct that with Season 2 though and give it the advertising their other original content gets.
 
If House of Cards is better than everything on TV except for Breaking Bad and Mad Men, that's a pretty fucking great debut. Especially considering that you can watch the entire thing for $8. I thought it "earned" every minute it got.

Looking forward to this much more than I expected, after these initial reviews.

I still don't understand where your initial statement of "dud" comes from.

And if we're making statements about quality, House of Cards is better than Boardwalk Empire and about equal to this past season of Justified. It's an incredibly well made show that unfortunately had a little sag in the middle.

I'm just glad that I can happily watch a deluge of incredible TV without getting hung up on what's "better" than what. So many options across so many platforms, much if it insanely cheap too.
