I know from your posts that you played a lot of XI, so you at one point probably experienced the above, and I can't comment on what it was like to have a really well-geared or simply capped XI character, but I stand by my statement that XI was plenty dangerous and that I miss it in some ways (and can also see all the reasons why they'd want to change that in XIV too).
Well, the first time one plays the game, yeah. I could see it being "dangerous". It was in my case. Venture outside of the staring zones and things start to aggro when you walk right in front of them (as they start to do in XIV). Maybe you walk right into the path of Rampaging Ram (or a Fate NM spawns next to you in XIV...DAMMIT) or something. The run to Jeuno? After that? Nah. One would die enough from trains and such from early XI to assume everything aggroed and popped those sneak/invis potions, spells, ninjitsu.
The main thing is comes down to was that XI was party based for leveling almost to a fault. So, mobs in zones you were required to go through were much higher level than a solo player for the most part. I believe that may be where your beef lies. The fact that XI was punishing to solo players for so long while XIV is not to that level (yet?).
Edit: Elvaans or w/e they are in this game are so much more improved in this game its mind blowing. Especially the females. From awkward to awesome. Gorgeous characters.
