I know from your posts that you played a lot of XI, so you at one point probably experienced the above, and I can't comment on what it was like to have a really well-geared or simply capped XI character, but I stand by my statement that XI was plenty dangerous and that I miss it in some ways (and can also see all the reasons why they'd want to change that in XIV too).

Well, the first time one plays the game, yeah. I could see it being "dangerous". It was in my case. Venture outside of the staring zones and things start to aggro when you walk right in front of them (as they start to do in XIV). Maybe you walk right into the path of Rampaging Ram (or a Fate NM spawns next to you in XIV...DAMMIT) or something. The run to Jeuno? After that? Nah. One would die enough from trains and such from early XI to assume everything aggroed and popped those sneak/invis potions, spells, ninjitsu.

The main thing is comes down to was that XI was party based for leveling almost to a fault. So, mobs in zones you were required to go through were much higher level than a solo player for the most part. I believe that may be where your beef lies. The fact that XI was punishing to solo players for so long while XIV is not to that level (yet?).

Edit: Elvaans or w/e they are in this game are so much more improved in this game its mind blowing. Especially the females. From awkward to awesome. Gorgeous characters.

Also regarding Lightning on ARR:

...But, yes, we do understand that 1.0 hardcore players will wonder 'Well, what's going on? How is she going to fit in the world?' and so we definitely expected that reaction.

Once I'm back in Japan I will probably write a long forum post again to explain in more detail to the fans. Myself, I am one of those who really wants to make sure that the FF14 world is kept safely in a FF14 way - so I don't want to destroy the lore. There's going to be plenty of cutscenes and explanation of the reasons in the storylines of why Lightning can appear in FF14.

Please be rest assured that there is a reason, and I'm going to make sure that it's natural she's in this world. Is she going to stay here? What's going to happen to her..? All that is also going to be mentioned in the storyline - it's going to become a natural part of the history of Eorza.

Anyone has experience with gaming keyboards? I just purchased this Logitech G510s, hopefully will arrive before the end of this week's beta to try it out.

Can keyboards be used with PS3? If so then I'll need to get one for this game...typing without one is hell.

Can someone in short summarize what Free Companies do and if there's any advantage for me to join them if I only play casually and have no experience with MMOs besides this beta? I'm kinda lost with all this terminology and the game throws a lot of you if you're not familiar with the genre.

Also, since everyone is doing it, here's my weak little chraracter.

Here's my character from the beta:

I logged out as my Miner, but I have a decent set of gear for my 35 GLA, I just don't have the best set in the beta.

Edit: This is my 1.0 character that I will probably never touch since I never unlocked any jobs or even hit cap on. She's over on Diablos, so I might at least get her transferred over to the GAF Legacy server, but she''l mostly live out her days in quite solitude.

Of course you can use any USB keyboard, you can even bind many keys if you have problems with the controller.

The only thing is that the UI will remain that of the PS3, is not possible to have the PC UI on PS3.

Free Companies are becoming more like what end game linkshells were in Final Fantasy XI. It will be a group of people who do things in game together, such as the instances. Not all of the features have been unveiled yet for what all it can do. If you are casually playing, a linkshell may be a better option, but that doesn't mean you can't also be in a FC.

Do you think this would be any good for left-handed use, if you ditched the directional keys, remapped all of that keypad for hotbar macros (bearing in mind combo-keys), and used the 4-way thumb stick for movement?

I considered one of those, but in the end I'll keep my "FFXI" setup (movement on numpad and camera on arrow keys). Also I didn't like the placement of all the keys, they seem too small and all cramped together, I'm sure I would make many mistakes with that, so I went for the keyboard I posted above since it has good space between the G keys, and seem very easy to find.

People are cheap and have been conditioned to think MMOs should be free. No thanks.

Nostalgia? FFXI was only "dangerous" the first time you played it and you didn't know what aggroed and what didn't. How would you change this for XIV? Or MMOs in general?

I even went all out to explain to them why pay to play is good. They still b**** about it saying stuff like "14 bucks a month is bullcrap, i shouldn't have to pay that" or they would say something along the lines of this "If I'm going to pay a monthly fee for a game, they better give me more then just the game itself"

Truth be told, i acted the same way along time ago when Guild Wars first launched and when i moved over to WoW, i finally got it, and understood the value behind what i was paying monthly for. It's a shame to be honest.

That's interesting, because that was literally the first thing I tried to do when I was in the first beta, and unfortunately the camera kept doing weird things and for some reason it just didn't feel like it did in XI. What did you do to get it exactly like XI controls? Because I'd love that in all honesty.

It is what it is. WoW and FFXI have proved that people will gladly pay for quality. All there is to it. This year is FFXI's 11th year btw...

Edit: Wait. XIV has XI's like keyboard controls?! HOW?

They are literally the only way I play MMOs now. I love having all the hotbar numbers in much easier striking distance than on a traditional keyboard. I have one of these on every computer I use. Well, not this specific one, but a keypad like this. I have both the G15 and the Nostromus.

See this is why i have no issues with paying a monthly fee, I'm sorry but the amount of content and features i witnessed myself during this phase of the beta plus more they will add into beta phase 4 and that's not even the topping of it for when the game launches. YEAH this game alone proves to me, its worth the monthly fee on it. Besides, Square needs some loving right now with that recent loss they had. Ill gladly support for this game.

Nice, do you use the setup like I described above? Or what's the easiest/most natural way to use it for MMO's?

Are there keyboards that have nothing but hotkey slots and no return/caps/etc?

Yup, was using a wired USB one the other day for typing and it was amazing compared to using the controller.

Looking for a cheap bluetooth keyboard now ready for launch.

So i heard that Keyboard and Mouse support for the PS3 is in the game but isn't working very well. Now i also heard that the PS4 and PC version will support both 100%. Now i would like to know if the PS3 version will support both to make it feel like if i was on PC. Cause when i was messing around with it, i wasn't able to cast spells with the keyboard expect move/move camera. Anyone here know if it will be 100% support on the PS3 come launch? or am i just not enabling something.

Well the only real difference from the FFXI setup is that the arrows won't work for menus if you set them for the camera. All I did was put movement on 2,4,6,8 and camera on arrow keys, if you mistype the NumLock key then your movement keys become the camera controls, but that's not something I'd do since I believe I'm not using 7 or /.

As for the menu browsing goes, I set them up on WASD. If I had that Razer keypad I would actually configure the menu browsing to the stick.

Edit: Wait. XIV has XI's like keyboard controls?! HOW?

It doesn't but you can keybind pretty much everything, and since the game is not an action game then it still works well with a numpad/arrows combo. My only gripe as I mention above is about menu browsing since it can't be set to the arrows if they have the camera on them.

------------------------------------------------

I just uploaded my keybind.dat file to Google docs, if you want to try my setting, the file goes on your character's folder on C:\Users\---------\Documents\My Games\FINAL FANTASY XIV - A Realm Reborn (Beta Version)

Scan the file with antivirus, etc. Not gonna be blamed for malware.

yup I have an older G11 with the same number of keys on the side. I went and set up three vertical rows with the extra hot bars over to the left side.

no screenshots but I'll try and remember to post one on wednesday.

I think it was a bigger concern that someone might buy the PS3 version and then find out that the PS4 version was coming out right after they bought it; that would be more shocking as it might upset players. I thought it would be better to let players know up front that the PS4 version is coming out, but in the meantime you can start out playing the PS3 version if you want, as we have squeezed the maximum quality from that platform. Start with that platform if you wish and enjoy the game experience; all the character data you gain with the PS3 version can then be converted to the PS4 version.

I thought that message would be more straightforward and less confusing to players; that's the reason why we decided to make the announcement now. It's really up to the players - if they want to wait for the PS4 version, that's fine.

no mention of possible discount makes me sad :<
