There's a petition for asking Microsoft To Bring Back Xbox One's DRM

Forward progress, a future where DRM isn't a 4 letter word.

A Future where Creators/Publishers agree with Consumers on how the consumers can manage the digital content they purchase.

4. ????

I'm pretty sure I'm missing something, it's too early for me....but what?

Again I really wish MS would have stuck to their guns and released Xbox One the way they wanted to. With an alternative in place I would have loved to see how the next generation would have played out with one system going the route developers and publishers have been beating their drums about. In the end we are going to end up with MS vision in the future, it is inevitable. This petition, though mocked on GAF is not far from the reality of the general consumer. And it wouldn't take much to convince even the hardcore or gaffers to start rationalizing to themselves that something is necessary to continue gaming, even begrudingly.

The DRM was not mandated by third parties.
The "general consumer" rejected the idea by not buying it. That's why it was reversed.

the phrase "4 letter word" means that something is a bad word.

comes from

Damn
Hell

Cock
Fart
Turd
Twat
etc......

all being 4 letter words.

There is no reason MS can't offer trading, reselling digital and the family plan on all digital purchases. It's telling that since they don't have control over ALL games they won't offer these 'future of gaming' console plans.
This. All those options could still be available but they chose to take their ball and go home.

Personally i had no problems with it.
I hate video game cases and physical copies.
But i understand others dont have a good connection or do like physical copies.

Nah how about people making a petition to kill mandatory kinect?

So what's stopping folks buying DD versions for Xbone? All games will have DD release day one. Don't like case/discs then buy digital, but those who do like the physical product now don't have any extra restriction.

Everybody wins, no?

Personally I would like the no-disc option to be made available somehow.

It's called "buying digital". That hasn't gone away.

Exactly. MS could very easily go you know if you buy digitally you can have all this shit including the check ins. Or if you want when installing from a disc If you agree you again can have all this. They just don't want to because they're throwing a fit like a 6 year old in Walmart would because they didn't get their way. It was all or nothing and now that people didn't want it they're taking their ball and going home with it.

There is no denying there were good things they could still do like the sharing. There is no reason it can't be done still now though.

It wasn't mandated, but that doesn't mean they were against it or didn't want it. They have been demonizing the resell market for years now. Xbox One taking off would be a wet dream for them and thats exactly what MS was playing to and hoping to get exclusive support.

The general consumer didn't even have a chance to speak about it, the backlash was all forum dwelling hardcore gamers. That was apparent from the multiple personality syndrome most gaming journalist sites were carrying on with at that time. They didn't know which audience to play up to so they kept waffling till the Sony conference.

It was the preorder numbers that really made MS backpeddle, they didn't see that bump and got scared. I don't feel they would have rebounded much by launch but I still would have wanted to see them keep the DRM and their plans to the full extent to see how it would have all played out. Call it a social experiment, it would have been a complete trouncing of this DRM bullshit and show firsthand to developers and publishers why the resell market isn't the reason for their failures. What we have now is like a wet fish, its just a postponement of what will come and unresolved ideals and fingerpointing.

Am I the only one who prefers it if the DRM came back as an option? I would love to play my physical games without the disc in the drive. And I'm not bothered by the downsides of this DRM. But I also understand that others are bothered by it, thus making it an option to use it for those who want the benefits of it like me.

I would sign it, but not for the same reasons. :D

LOL! I can't wrap my head around this. Seriously? People want to be chained and whatnot and for what? I can't even give an example as to why this would benefit gamers.

And yes, that "family sharing" thing was a pipedream. If that was really their solution, wouldn't announcing that at E3 or when this whole mess started alleviated this? Heck, we've contacted MS PR countless times and didn't even hear a peep.

If MS was restricting secondhand sales, what on earth makes you think they'll allow 10 friggin' people to buy just ONE game and share it among themselves? You don't even need to be good at business to know that's one weird logic.

It's like a movie company announcing you can't resell or loan your movies but you'll be able to share it with 20 people with no charge. It's so damn ridiculous I can't believe people think that was ever going to happen.

No way in hell MS won't pimp that stuff out if it was their intent.

The fact that there are people who say "I don't care" when I tell them that we might not be able to play our games 15 years down the line if Microsoft were to go through with this DRM stuff legitimately frightens me.

I'm going to be laughing at them when that happens. Their fault that they wanted DRM back.

Oh, wait...Microsoft can easily bring it back at anytime though, it's not completely gone since they spent millions designing it around the XBO's architecture.

It has been said by a decent number of sources that MS had deal with publishers for digital full game sharing.

It's gone now so there's no need for the back and forth.

Hopefully it will come back in some form in the future.

Link to sources please

I've honestly been looking for a 3rd party publisher or someone anyone to confirm MS's "vision" of family sharing as that holds a lot more weight with me then MS statements

Honestly think the original vision of Family share was the 60 minute demo described by cboat but that the fear E3 put into MS might've had them look at making it a full game share

Still doubt it though

Also have yet to hear any logical/rational reason why MS can't implement all their wonderful innovative features on digital downloads

Bringing back game sharing for digital purchases (with online drm for the shared title) does make sense. No to everything else though. Honestly, how hard is this?

It never existed as people imagined it. That's the whole point of why they killed it. It got too big built on misconceptions.

There never was a direct quote from a 3rd party saying they pushed for the DRM. There were only rumors they pushed for it. I think that was more of a defense people created for MS to defend their DRM decisions. Like MS only did it because they were catering to their wishes.

I love restrictions. I want always online DRM. I want the game rental business to become obsolete. I don't want to let my friends borrow games, because fuck them. All I care about is my god damn new age console that'll blow everything else out of the water! Fuck the PS4 and fuck those Sony guys for catering to fans who care about their gaming experience. Fuck PC, that shit is stupid. Steam? Fuck that shit. They never have sales or anything. It's not as affordable as buying my games from the XBL marketplace. I love Microsoft and their business practices will be the best forever. Fuck yes. <3 Xbox.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

Care to provide a link to these sources??

I think it's too late to change it now as the damage is gone, but Xbone was much better with the DRM then without it. With the DRM Xbone brings most of the benefits of Steamworks to games consoles. The number 1 problem with digital games are the prices due to no competition, but with the old system you could've popped down to your local store and bought a brand new digital copy at a competitive price. Want to switch games? No need to worry about scratched disks or getting up to change it. Go to your friends Xbone, sign in, and all your games are there. Then there was the family sharing system, which would've allowed some game sharing (vs 0 game sharing on Steam).

With the new system Xbone is a weaker, more expensive PS4. Why they changed it is beyond comprehension.

Classic, well played gamers, you're changing your opinions quicker than Microsoft changed their policies in the first place.

Everyone who says that the benefits of the mystical Family Share Plan are "the future if gaming" deserve a swift kick to the junk.

Can someone tell me if that Major Nelson comment that Artist posted is real? My mind can't decide because it's full of fuck.

Also, how many signatures does the petition have so far?

Never understood why MS still couldn't do all that with games bought off their digital store.

I also do not believe that the family plan was exactly what MS said it was. Not just because I'm more trusting of CBOAT vs Geis and MS PR, but because it made no logical sense that an industry fighting to keep 1 game from passing to 1 other person would be fine with 1 person sharing that same game with 10 people and getting to keep his copy.

Also Bgamer90, you are the guy who would not believe that PS4 wouldn't require an internet connection, even after it was repeatedly explained by Sony higher ups before the conference.

You were very adamant in this thread:
Mark Cerny: "PlayStation 4 won't require to be always connected"

Yet you are taking what two MS employees (and Geis) are saying as gospel after the 180 (thus they can claim it was anything).

Console warriors, come out and playyeeeeeeeaaayyyyy.

Probably my second favorite gif after this one:

They did the smart thing by reversing it all for the sake of damage control. MS could have avoided a world of hurt if they just announced offlinedisc based play at E3, fucking idiots.

Oh, wow, his "I'm familiar with how companies twist things for good PR via making vague statements" in the face of his comments in this thread is really an eye opener.

I really, really wish they had gone through with the original plan.

It's always fun to watch Microsoft destroy a successful business.

Everyone here should sign. Seriously. We should get MS to take notice and change their DRM back.

And then we should go fucking nuts and demand they remove it again. It'd be great, we could keep it running for months of lols
