Steam Sale - (Overlooked) Indie Game Deals Discussion Thread

I just felt that the levels were really, really, really basic. The biggest difference was basically the form of level obstacles. Then they sometimes threw some other things in that move according to the gravity that you are setting and might harm/squash you. Thats basically everything the game offered for me on a gameplay level in 2 sentences. The art on the other hand was lovely and the only reason I actually finished it.
You're absolutely right, that's a perfect summary of the gameplay. And I liked the game. Like I said before, it's worth playing for the art style, but only if you can tolerate simplistic gameplay.
I did not like Monaco at all, and I was anticipating it for 4 years or something. I am so bitter and salty about this game. Dont get me wrong, its a decent action game, but I think there is a reason why most of GAF and the world forgot about the game 1 week after its release. Its just not even close to being the game I imagined it to be after the insane hype and award nominations.

You know, I almost bought the game at release, I decided against it at the last moment because I wasn't sure that it would be a great single player game. I felt a lack of enthusiasm around it after release so I moved it to the "maybe" part of my wishlist. So it seems I was right to be cautious.

And thanks for edditing my Snapshot recommendation! I completely forgot of the recommendations on the first page!

After reading the OP (thanks again Toma for your dedication) im really interested in Cart Life, but im still on the fence becuase of the high difficulty it says in the description, and that I didnt understand anything from the trailer.
Is it fun? Have any one here play it and did you like it?
Would love to now more info about it.

Play it for free first.

And awful sound effects. Everytime you die, the sound will make you cringe.

Just try the free version and then decide whether you think the dev is worth supporting :)

And I don't know Winter Voices.

That game is a weird beast. I like it, but its super slow, but it just has a certain... charme to it that makes me adore it when I think of it.

It's a first person mindfuck of a puzzle game. Surprised no one has mentioned it

Haha, stealth edit. And I really recommend you getting it. It's surprisingly fresh. Easily the game that wowed me the most since Portal 2.

Although some advice for everyone: go in there with no clue what you're supposed to do. That's part of the game. Looking things up will only spoil everything.

It already was in the OP, but I didnt get to adding it back in after I dropped the daily deal list:

Antichamber - $9,99 (50% off)
antichamber1.jpg

http://store.steampowered.com/app/219890

Mindbending 3D portal-esque puzzle game that is described as "every aspect of it is created to bring players out of their comfort zone" and that "the biggest enemy you will be facing is yourself." This game won a myriad of awards, so are you prepared to check out what the fuss is about?

AYIM and Nimbus are really nowhere close as good as Rochard and Amnesia.

Same goes for Prison Architect (good game), but that game is STUPIDLY expensive.

I'd bump up Amnesia and Antichamber for sure. Amnesia is one of the best horror games out there, and what I've played of Antichamber was quite good. And Yet it Moves is pretty cool, I played a few hours of it a while back.

Anyway, so far this sale I've purchased: Antichamber, Fez, and FTL. Was considering Dust, but I think I'll wait on that since I have enough to play for the foreseeable future.

Not sure I can run Rochard (Game Debate says my integrated graphics can't) and I'm still on the fence about Amnesia. Once I get Gunpoint and Warband, I'll probably only have 8.50 left

Both look awesome, especially Rochard (I have a passion for physics/puzzle platformers)

ReusReusReusRe...

Sorry, reflex.

Man, that game really spoke to you, huh? Is it just a well made game or was it something more? You know, how people talk about being inspired or moved by a game?

I would like an explanation too. On this French website called Gamekult, which is not so good at rating indie games in fact, the game only got 6 out of 10.

You just notice the love and passion the devs have for the game pouring out from every inch of your screen when playing it. The game is by no means perfect, but the only thing to be a truly perfect game right now is more content to serve more variation in gameplay mechanics. The before mentioned leviathans or weather system would enhance the game a great deal and this depends on how much development the sales of the game can finance.

It just comes together so nicely. The unique way of progress, the amazing amount of detail in possible plant/animal/mineral combinations, the interactions of the villagers, the art style, etc. I actually played quite a few games more than Reus, but its one of those games that I just want to see succeeding.

I can totally see how some people used to bigger games might not like it. Its not a game with lots of thrills and requires some patience and planning. I recommend reading some impressions over in the OT:

Just wanted to drop by and say that this thread is always the highlight of the Steam Sales for me. Big thanks to Toma and the rest of the community for making it happen.

Go with Amnesia. As good as Rochard is... i didnt liked it for long. I got bored after 2 hours. Didnt even finished the game.

Right now i cant decide.

Im interested in one of those titles : Showdown Effect (played the beta and it was just awesome but i only buy it for 2.50), Under The Ocean, Super House of Dead Ninjas,Cart Life, FLY'N,Zeno Clash 2,Strike Suit Infinity,Receiver,Rogue Legacy (if it goes less than 9€).

Wich one should i buy?

- They Bleed Pixels

I was disappointed with They Bleed Pixels. It's a Super Meat Boy style platformer, meaning it's brutal and requires precision, but it is neither as fast nor as fluid, and that really hurts the game. Also I though the combat was clunky and brought the game down instead of improving it or bringing a new aspect to the genre, which I think was the intention. I wouldn't say the game is bad, I enjoy it despite the flaws I mentioned, but unless you're starving for precision platformers I would recommend buying something else instead.

Rochard was pure fun from start to finish, a sadly overlooked game. You said you liked physics platformers, right? So you should buy Rochard NOW.

Dustforce is also a precision platformer, a brutal one I must say. But it is incredibly beautiful and fluid, the music is also outstanding, fitting the art style perfectly. Completing a level perfectly is something beautiful to watch and a pleasure to do. But my god the third tier levels are difficult. I perfected all the first and second tier levels, but the third I just can't.

Can anyone explain what the differences are between Strike Suit Zero and Infinity? If I only was able to pick up one, how do I know which to get?

Alright, adding the games back in that I deleted from the OP when I dropped the dailies:

FEZ - $7.49 (25% off)
ss_3ca0c443b1c7e7b76da98daaf2065ab1f982d7ae.600x338.jpg

store.steampowered.com/app/224760/?snr=1_7_15__13

Phil Fish's doucheyness aside, this game sets a new bar for what puzzle games can be. Its a tremendous effort in creating true mystique and curiosity in the players head. Considering it is probably the best and most spectacular game in its genre, you owe it to yourself to check it out at one point, even though you might already have been afflicted with Puzzle Platforming fatigue.

FTL - $4.99 (50% off)
R9KU5.jpg

http://store.steampowered.com/app/212680

It is basically a Roguelike in space with some light sim aspects. And that roguelike aspect totally has its hooks in me. You start the game with 1 out of 18 ship designs available and try to get as far as you can for the highscore (or even beating the boss, but that will probably take a while), maybe unlocking other ships in the meantime. One of the biggest game surprises of the recent years and an absolute must play at this price point. There is a reason why so many people are in love with this game.

Surgeon Simulator 2013 - $5.99 (40% off)
ss_2649ec090dbd500cc561a1dce6d844a6068ce242.600x338.jpg

http://store.steampowered.com/app/233720/

Mindboggingly hilarious game. I have no clue how the game got as popular, but there we are, cutting up the heavy as the medic from TF2.

Chivalry - $12.49 (50% off)
ss_22656900c08bcd083fe7ecc284eb753529650a2d.600x338.jpg

http://store.steampowered.com/app/219640/?cc=us

Straightforward in approach yet exceedingly effective in delivery, it elevates the notion of melee combat past a last ditch combat maneuver and into a realm of medieval, online multiplayer bliss.

Toki Tori 2 - $9,89 (34% off, stackable with a 10% code to 44%)
Toki-Tori-2-PC-Wii-U-Steam-Two-Tribes-Puzzle-Platformer.jpg

http://store.steampowered.com/app/201420/

Toki Tori did a 180° for his sequel. If you loved the design of the first one, you'll like already have bought the second, but even for people (like me) who didnt like the puzzles of the first one, Toki Tori 2 is definitely worth a look. They changed the level based structure and very finicky puzzles to a bigger, more open world structure, inviting the player to explore.

Don't Starve - $11,99 (20% off)
ss_38d4d1b21050fc4b3978fcf65c909260d3673fb7.600x338.jpg

http://store.steampowered.com/app/219740

A game about staying alive, and it won't be easy. If hunger doesn't kill you, insanity, poison, harsh weather or the mean shit that lurks at night will. Explore the map to find various terrains containing unique resources and creatures. Craft tools, weapons, equipment and structures. Develop new technologies. Maybe even build a base complete with buildings, decorations and self-sustaining farms. Basically, just do whatever it takes to stay alive.

Endless Space - $14,99 (50% off)
ss_e18d0c9010b4e101ab411227e358edae7c5fdf2b.600x338.jpg

http://store.steampowered.com/app/208140

A 4X game in the vein of the civilization series. While it doesnt offer the overall depth of games like Civilization 4 and Galactic Civilization 2, its still a pretty good game in its own right. Due to the lowered complexity level and the fantastic UI, I consider it rather beginner friendly and although I like complexity in my games, still an enjoyable game overall if I want a relaxing round of 4X. If your sole purpose of playing these games is complexity, then you might want to hold off however, since other games (GalCiv2) did a better job in that regard.

Hotline Miami - $4,99 (50% off)
ss_bdf28f59652e53e725d96d94cdc8db97fc277cf2.600x338.jpg

http://store.steampowered.com/app/219150/

The speed and easy retry of SMB, the developed precision (yet with variety and freedom) ass-whooping skill of God Hand, but in the overhead format usually reserved for pure shooters, then style style style.

Q.U.B.E. - $2,49 (75%)
gOgfMWE.jpg

http://store.steampowered.com/app/203730/

Isolated puzzle game, very much in a similar style to the original portal game. You play a silent protagonist stuck inside a QUBE, you have a glove that can activate colour squares within this QUBE. You basically navigate through and solve puzzles, some are head scratchers but with trial and error you will get there eventually. Really enjoyed it.

Are there any other bullet hell/shoot 'em ups on Steam, similar to the eXceed games? I bought those thanks to this thread and they are great, so I could always use more. Not to mention my laptop sucks ass and could use more games that are actually playable.

Puzzle Quest 2 - $2,49 (75% off)
ClHtYg0.jpg

http://store.steampowered.com/app/47540/

The most complex and engaging match 3 gems puzzle game. Comparing with any other game in the genre, there is an unbelievable wealth of mechanics in this game, from battle skills, dungeon romping, equip and loot and lots more. If you want a match 3 game with more than just the basic gameplay, grab this.

Unity of Command - $6.79 (66% off)

I will pick this one up before the end of the sale. I suppose the chance of a flash or daily deal is low, but the discount is nice enough already.

v And yes yes to Zeno Clash 2 and Receiver. Both are on my wishlist. v

Since I already got Torchlight 2, the only games for me right now are Zeno Clash 2 and Receiver. Actually already own Receiver but I never understood how to get a Steam key from the developers so I might as well get it cheap from Steam.

Oh, and people, check Zeno Clash. Game is great and is bound to be cheap in this sale.

Same goes for Prison Architect (good game), but that game is STUPIDLY expensive.

The reason why it's so expensive is in fact everything but stupid. It's mainly to only attract people that are aware that the game is far from finished and that are really willing to help improve it, instead of just whining on the forums because of the bugs/missing features/etc...

I don't know if it's the best idea, but it seems to work quite well for Introversion. They raised quite a lot of money and people are really giving good feedbacks to help improve the game.

There is a video of one of the devs about that somewhere, but I can't find it...

I know why they did, my wallet simply doesnt agree with their reasoning.

I am on vacation, why did you do that :'(
I know the feeling. Worst timing for a vacation ever for me. Just as I get involved with Steam and the big Sale starts, we go to Florida. If it wasn't for my phone and 3G, I would have missed the sale entirely

But being a part of NeoGaf helps a lot. So many great people here and you can actually have a discussion unlike some other forums I've been on

I know why they did, my wallet simply doesnt agree with their reasoning.

I perfectly understand.

I'm fond of Introversion, they are great guys, so I backed the game (and barely played it, I don't have time, and also I'd like it to be a little bit more polished before jumping in).

But I can see a lot of potential in that game.

Can I use Amazon Payments to buy funds and games on Steam? Like instead choosing a credit card or Paypal, use that instead?

I know it's possible with Humble Bundles. Not sure with Steam

Need more $$ for more indies...

I hit the search thread function, and incredably, I didn't find any mention of Hard Reset in this thread, an absurd deal from its already low price of $15 at now $3.74. Its an old school FPS with little fat and really great graphics/gameplay. How does a game this awesome not become a major hit, I dunno?
...
Hard Reset is now $3.74, is amazing.

I noticed the price on this and picked it up at the very beginning of the sale. I'm looking forward to trying it out, but damn...with all these other deals, it could be a while...

Figured out a way to crash Antichamber that is a bit hilarious (mid way game spoilers)
If you draw a box around yourself the new cubes will form inward, crushing you and making the game very unhappy

I'm about to buy McPixel sight unseen because of the tone of the recommendations in this thread.

Don't disappoint me, GAF. This game better be worth at least 99 cents.

Just a PSA regarding Dungeons of Dredmor.

While one of the DLC packs is free, it seems you still have to download it manually. Luckily it's only a few mB's.

Alright, Toma. Your constant barrage of reusreusreus has convinced me to get it even though I have a billion games to play.

Are there any turn-based strategy games I should look at? List a few if you can, I probably own some.
