Motorola is set to reveal its highly-anticipated new Android smartphone, the Moto X, on August 1st. We've received an invite for an event in New York City with the teaser "Come experience the new Motorola." The invite itself features the much-leaked Moto X and its distinctive curved top ridge in both black and white.

We already know quite a bit about the Moto X, which will be the first Motorola phone completely built under Google's watch. It's expected that the company will focus on customizations with the new device, giving users the option to choose the color of the back and sides of the phone, for instance. CEO Dennis Woodside also said earlier this year that the Moto X would be assembled in the US at a Texas-based plant, and it's said that local assembly will allow custom devices to ship to customers quickly. The Moto X is expected to launch on all major US carriers, and it may cost as little as $199 off-contract.

199 off contract? I'm in.

Is it that terrible? I'm trying to jump ship from my iPhone 4S

Bah, it looks good. It's just that GAF seems to have a taste only for high-end phones. Moto X is mid-range, spec-wise, and it looks good enough to me.

The hardware seems to be built around Android 5.0 (I imagine most of its features will come to other phones, but it seems to be made to do those things with more efficiency).

$200 off contract? Either Google is somehow getting some money out of this and/or it's going to have specs more like my HTC Evo 3D + NFC/LTE/bluetooth 4.0 which is no slouch but not anything close to a GNex

Guys it's not going to be $200 off contract. It'll be $300-350 at least. This is stupid Verge speculation based on the specs.

This reminds me of when everyone said Android phones would be free with ads or Chromebooks would be $200 at first (took two years to get to that point.)

Let's say that every person on gaf could've made a nicer looking phone.

really? you are giving gaf too much credit. i think it looks nice

whoa. I'd get it. I need to stay grandfathered into my unlimited 4G on Verizon which requires I buy a phone straight up.

My Galaxy Nexus is still smooth as hell and gives me no issues except for battery, so I'm sure this would be fine... plus Moto's focus on battery life on their past phones bodes well.

I really don't believe that price though.

Damn if they can sell it for 200 off contract that will he huge. If someone loses their phone or breaks it, good alternative to get a replacement!

The $200 variant will only have touch input on the bottom half of the screen, 1 gb of storage, and a RG pentile amoled layout.

Wholly satisfied with my Nex4, so I'd be happy to see another solid/affordable 'mid-range' option out there, even if I'm not completely convinced on the MotoX just yet. Just gonna have to wait a few weeks for those user impressions to roll in.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if it was dirt cheap. Google have been trying to lower the margins in mobile devices for quite some time, with at least the Nexus 7 being sold at cost and the Nexus 4 being really cheap.

I'd almost go as far as to say that this may have been the real motivation to buy Motorola. So far OEMs like Asus have been surprisingly willing to sell devices at cost and making it a lot more difficult for the OEMs to compete. Now that Google owns Motorola, they could just sell everything Motorola makes at cost. They just want to get Android in everyones hands and continue making all that ad money.

Not confident in Motos build quality anymore. My Droid OG and Bionic both have gone to shit in their second years, specifically the headphone jack.

does this mean there will be no Nexus 5? Or will the Nexus 5 be bumped to higher mid-tier level, like $300-400, and the Moto X in the $200-300 level?

My Atrix 4G is still going strong after 2.5 years. Never used a case and it is still working perfectly.

Yuuup, My droid/milestone's headphone jack went after about 4 months of use, totally shit. Thing was built like a tank though. Plus Motorola phones tend to have almost uncrackable bootloaders so custom roms are hard to do, maybe that'll change now they're owned by google.

Is it filled with lint? Serious question because I've had my Bionic fill with pocket lint on several occasions.

New article by Verge, it describest hardware and software provided by trusted "tipster"
http://www.theverge.com/2013/7/19/4...cifications-processor-memory-battery-software

Dualcore 1.7GHz Snapdragon S4Pro
2GB ram
4.5" 720p display
1500 mAh battery T_T
Auto HDR camera mode
"Always-on" listening mode is turned off by default
Wrist flicking motion can turn on camera

WTF at that battery

Looking at those specs, looks like a Nexus 4, but with a smaller screen (only 0.2") and with a shitty battery

Well it's not exactly a flagship phone, dual-core processor, 720p 4.3 inch screen...not exactly cutting edge.

edit: if this has a 1500 mAh battery...I don't even know what to think...

After the troubles I had with my Droid X, I refuse to buy another Motorola phone even if they are under Google now. The build quality of the phone was great and it survived every drop, toss, and abuse I threw at it, but the software caused such a headache when trying to make a call. It got to the point I couldn't dial anyone unless they were in my contact list and it wouldn't let me add anyone new unless I extracted the number from a text.

Well this should be pure AOSP so you shouldn't have to worry about that.

The Galaxy Nexus battery is only 1750mah. So 1500 isn't too bad. As long as there's a removable cover for a 2nd battery and a SD slot, I will buy it for less than $300 :)

I don't think the Moto X will have poor battery life. That is one of the few features that Larry Page has mentioned a few times as being a key area of improvement in the future of phones, and it's something that Motorola has traditionally done well.

Now that google runs Moto there is no way there will be a sd card slot. Google does not like expandable storage. They say it confuses consumers.

Moto division should be profitable on its own. I doubt Samsung, Sony, HTC, etc will be too happy that the money they help bring to Google will go to subsidize competitor. I think it is a great idea for the nexus line though because the love gets shared.

The iPhone 5 has a 1440mAh battery, and users keep saying how good it is. Let’s not complain about things we don’t know.
I know this is still Android, and you’ll most probably be right, but let’s give it a shot, it might be a surprise.

Rumors also say that it is removable, and therefore replaceable, too. Let’s be patient.

As far as other specs go, it's indeed not a high end phone, but definitely a good one. A Nexus 4 good, which ain't bad at all.

You know what? The phone I'm currently using came with a 1500mAH battery, and I replaced it after it became terrible, but if the phone uses the battery more efficiently, I'll be fine with it.

It has half of the Nexus 4's CPU, if those specs are correct.
