Dragon's Crown Thread of Import Impressions and Elf

My thoughts on the Vita version, about 5 and a half hours in:

This game is very good and so far, it seems to have turned out exactly how I'd hoped it would - a good 2d brawler with rpg and loot elements that make it have some killer longevity. I feel like I've barely scratched the surface of anything with over 5 hours of gameplay. I'm having a killer time.

Having said that, I felt like the game had too much narration/dialogue early on. It may have been the constant cutscenes (which are beautiful, by the way) but I felt like the levels were really short and was hoping this wasn't the norm. Thankfully, after getting into the game a bit, this is a non-issue. The levels are lengthy and chalk-full of secrets, side paths, and stuff you will definitely miss the first time through.

The framerate and animation is wonderful for the most part, but once you get 5-10 characters on the screen all attacking or casting, there is a bit of slowdown. It's nothing insane but it is there. Hasn't bothered me much yet, though.

Being able to touch treasure and doors on the Vita is great, and even if you want to use the right-stick the Vita's smaller real-estate means it is likely easier to use. However, local multi seems like it would be an absolute blast. I'm looking forward to giving the ps3 version a shot as well, but waiting to buy it in the US (cheaper price and multi-region support).

The skill list for each character (and the common skill tree, which grants general skills) have a ton of choices and there are a lot of different ways to play each character. I've been playing Amazon so far and it has been an absolute blast. Once I learned how to properly block and evade, everything has felt so fluid and absolutely fun. There is definitely a lot more depth than a game like Muramasa here (as much as I adore Muramasa).

Lastly, the online takes too long to unlock. It hasn't bothered me as much as it might in a typical game just because I've been having so much fun offline, but 5+ hours to unlock online multi is pretty crazy. Local multi is available from the get-go, in case you were wondering.

All in all, I can easily see myself putting a sick number of hours into this, especially once I get online multi going with some of my dudes. Now back for more leveling and S-rank treasures... (after work!)

Is this game like Muramasa? I loved that game except for the extreme repetition. I just canceled all of these games I ordered because I have been buying too many without playing. Luckily I kept this one on order :)

Everything left in your post is exactly what i wanted to hear. So hype for this game!

The parts in bold have me excited as fuck, I won't even lie. The combination of lots of hidden stuff in stages along with a lot of skills to work on to change how your character plays means I'm going to be sinking a ton of hours into this. More if I get my friends involved.

Do we have confirmation that the online multiplayer is not cross-platfiorm?

Still undecided on whether to get it on PS3 or Vita. I would definitely prefer Vita, but then if my friends get it too I will miss out on multiplayer...

I'm getting it on both. Pretty sure they confirmed that online play is not cross-platform. I'm not even sure if the save data options can be shared.

Quick Question:

Does the game support cross-saves? I plan to buy the game for both the PS3 & Vita. If it supports it, how does it work?

Awesome.

...Wait, what? :S

Had to go to Tokyo for a work meeting today, so I stopped by Akihabara on my way home to check prices out. One store had the PS3 version at 8800 yen, VITA 7900 yen. Cheapest I found was 6900 yen for both versions at TRADER. And they had 2 used VITA copies for 6400 yen! Too expensive for me, will wait for NA PSN release instead.

I picked it up for about the same ~ 6700 Vita.

Slight more detail on unlocking co-op in this article, seems it took this guy 5 and a half hours to unlock. I get that this was probably a design choice just to sooth the player in and get a feel for the controls on there own, instead of partying them up with beginners and experts right from the get go, but over 5 hours in to unlock seems a bit too long to me. Especially for people who were looking to buddy up with friends online right from the start.

The "Vanillaware finally knocked the gameplay out of the park" impressions fill me with so much joy and only makes the wait harder.

These are pretty much my thoughts exactly. This game is scratching all the right itches.

While having online PS3 multiplayer and all PS Vita multiplayer being locked at first kinda sucks, I can probably see myself chugging through those first few hours without much gripe (difficulty/my success though remains to be seen lol). Part of me is bothered by it but the other part is okay with this since I'll have some level ups going in when I start multiplayer.

you can share your save file between the two versions

If you got the JP vita version to hold you over until the US ps3 version gets released would you be able to save transfer?

Thanks for all the impressions, guys.

The frame rate disparity is disappointing to hear, but I'm still probably getting the Vita version first since I figure I'd reach to play that one more often.

Don't hold your breath. Save data is organized by product ID. The product ID of the JP version will be something like BLJM-XXXXX, whereas the US version will be BLUS-XXXXX.

Tears of joy. Fuck yes, August 6th is going to be orgasmic!!!

Stop talking about this game >_<
I have 1800yen in my wallet right now so even a 5k PSN card would place me 180yen short of getting the game.

I thought about getting a 10k card but I managed to suppress my urge at the last moment.
I've been spending too much money recently between parts for my new PC and the Steam sales :(

Interesting how a game that's been in development hell since the Dreamcast days actually turned out great.

August 6th can't come soon enough.

Really nice to hear the positive impressions! And thanks for those giving them!

Gonna buy the PS3 and Vita versions just to support Vanillaware. (And I never do that shit)

The wait to play it is gonna be even harder now! :(

I think I've decided: I'll start with the Vita version, and if a friend buys it on PS3 down the road then I'll double dip for the online multiplayer. If the game is really that great then it shouldn't feel too bad (and I already did it with Project Diva F/f).

Not that exciting really. However, after you select your character, the character customizer (picking a color) lets you choose between English and Japanese for that character.

Just one question, if it isn't too much trouble. And I do appreciate the screen shots, thanks.

Does the "voice" actually control the battle voices(in game grunts)? Sometimes Vanillaware's games have a voice option, but don't alter that.

Thanks.
