Dragon's Crown Thread of Import Impressions and Elf

videogameplus.ca just sent me an e-mail saying my pre-order was shipped (and of course charged). Shouldn´t the game be out only on August 6th or something like that?
yes it says August 6th, what the hell then.
guess I'm going to pay it now so maybe it gets shipped earlier for me too.

Just finished looking at both versions in action.

The Vita version isn't as bad as I might have thought...but the PS3 version is still that much better. I'm gonna have to switch my preorder.

I'd really like it in my pocket but I can't deny what I saw with my own eyes.

Edit: And I still havent done anything and I'm still undecided for some reason. Godamnit Vanillaware, all you had to do was make both version 1:1 with the exception of co-op. The hell was the point of delaying it if its not......eh. Nevermind.

Sony should just force Cross-Buy into 3rd parties' throats. There's really no excuse for a game being simultaneously released for PS3 and Vita to not be Cross-Buy, it's a complete rip-off.

So far no 3rd party game (not counting indies) has ever been Cross-Buy. Clearly Sony has not been putting enough pressure on them.

I just did one of those weird sounding nose-snort-laugh things.
Seriously how on earth do we not have a word for this thing lol

I don't see why Sony has to put pressure on this, it's not like Sony is publishing the game. I think it was put well earlier ITT
Any publisher who thinks there's even the faintest ghost of a chance you'll buy both versions separately is going to take that chance.
Cross-buy is great PR for Sony, a legitimate selling point for indies, and throwing money away for everyone else.

I don't get the "it's not up to Sony" replies. Cross-Buy is significant added value to Sony's software ecosystem, it's in their best interest to encourage 3rd parties to use it.

And seeing Cross-Buy as "throwing money away" is a very simple-minded logic to begin with. It's a huge selling point that may convince someone on the fence into buying a game. On the other hand, not doing Cross-Buy makes the publisher look greedy, which can mean lots of lost sales from people who do not want to encourage them for this.

Is this game any fun single player? I don't have time for bro op gaming in my life currently.

I'm worried that when played single player the shortcomings of the genre (basically becoming mind numbingly repetitive without bros to play with) will shine through.

Does the game keep things fresh in terms of enemy and level design throughout? Does playing as the different classes significantly change the experience? Is there enough hidden shit to keep things interesting on multiple playthroughs?

Be honest...

No, it doesn't. You, on the other hand, come off as having an unearned sense of entitlement.

Does the Vita version allow for custom soundtracks? AKA: playing music in the Vita dashboard, then loading up the game as the music continues to play over it?

I guess some people feel like it adds false replay value or something? Or they hate that other players could be way stronger because of a RNG.

Personally I dont mind it

Apparently, you get so much good stuff so often that you never feel attached to a particular piece of equipment. The horror!

lol, those aren't issues. Thanks for the quick replies.

RNG always fucks me over. I don't give a shit.

How many characters can be saved on 1 file?

You should also know that the game is repetitive: you just fight on a 2D plane over and over! ;-)

Is there a list of Dwarf skills anywhere?

This game isn't skill based so you can grind your way to the platinum.

I read that someone at level 98 couldn't beat the Inferno final boss solo. When you reach level cap, "grinding" stops mattering, no? Perhaps the "true" game begins at level cap, like on MMOs? That random (infinite?) dungeon seems to be where it's at.

Anyone who has played a VanillaWare game knows that the hardest difficult is hard. Odin Sphere is the only game I have ever set to "Easy" and not felt bad about it.

Huh? Odin Sphere was quite easy for me. I finished it on normal both on US and EU versions. Perhaps I just loved its alchemy system a bit too much than was healthy (and am quite good with quick mental math calculations: 90-98 materials for the win). And with a few healing potions and painkillers you can trample pretty much everything.

Got an email from videogamesplus.ca saying that my copy of the game was shipping. Is it typical of games release in the US to be one week before the official date? Good thing I have Pikmin 3 to play while waiting for this.

This game pays more than homage to D&D Shadow over Mystara as over half of the bosses draw inspirations from bosses in that game not only in their designs but also in their attack patterns. As much as I love SOM, I have to admit bosses in the latter half of that game were poorly designed gameplay-wise as they are too difficult or not fun to fight without exploiting certain gimmicks/tricks. The overhaul given in their DC "reincarnations" - if I may call it such - creates intense moments in battle and I was overall very satisfied with all the bosses in this game. It will put a smile on your face if you were ever a fan of SOM.

That sounds awesome. I do agree that some late game SOM bosses are pretty bad, unfun and almost force you to exploit, so I guess we're on the same page here.

Not counting places breaking street date, it's more common for places to ship the game early enough that you'll get it on launch day. Amazon will probably ship theirs on, say, August 3 so people will have them by August 6 (if you opted for 2-day).
I'm shipping it to europe so that makes sense. I'm more used to shops getting the game 1-2 days before the release date where I live, 1 full week seemed a bit much but I'm not going to complain if I can play this next week.

That explains it then, as I'm indeed EU as well.

Seriously how on earth do we not have a word for this thing lol

But you do, don't you?
(I say "you" because I'm not a native English speaker, in case you're wondering :D).

Does anyone know if the JP import have english menus and text? I heard the character and narrator voices can be set to either english or japanese but what about the text?

Would you guys say it would be worth it to get this digitally on the Vita? How's the trade in value for games like this a few months after release?

i saw a post on the japanese wiki, i think labyrinth of chaos ends at 99th level

They're not obligated to give you 2 games for 1 price. Most rational consumers don't expect it either.

Finally started Tower of Doom to get myself a good frame of reference before I get this game.

The frame of reference would be Shadow over Mystara. Tower of Doom is not a bad game (and I do prefer a couple of things versus Mystara), but playing both back to back really shows how much deeper and richer Mystara is. For one, going back to ToD's slower and simpler combat is a bit painful. :D

But it's not two games, only one. That's the whole goddamn point. We shouldn't have to buy the same game twice. Nothing irrational about that.

Just read it, and I don't see what's "hilarious" or "crappy". Pretty solid review there too...

Maybe "hilarious" was not the right word.

I'm just sick and tired of the manufactured controversy about the art style. Just when I thought it had died out, Polygon makes a big deal about it in their review.

So because everyone's been talking about it on forums, the review should suddenly remain silent on the matter? BS. She found it detracted from her experience and so she mentioned it, and she was perfectly within her rights to do so. Sorry but no one cares that you're "tired of hearing about it", that's really your problem.

Then buy it on the one you want to play it on. Just like you would if you had multiple hd systems.

Porting between ps3 and vita is not free. Not sure why you're expecting a much smaller company to give away its game like Sony does.

I dropped it from Hard to Easy. So I am referring to its difficulty on higher settings. And of course, the unlockable difficulty is extremely hard.

It's two games. Just like it would be two games if it was on any other platform. Buying a PS3 game doesn't give me the right to have the port on vita.

I've got a question. Im playing this game with a few friends, and turning in and grabbing quests is a real pain in the ass. Is there anyway to make it so that we don't have to do it individually one by one?

Anyone else in the UK still not received their VGP order yet? It's been 3 weeks now. I did emaik them and they said there has been delays with them getting to people, and will refund me or replace it next week.

Just curious if anyone else is still waiting or only received it recently!
