There was also something that bothered me: when they said the Kaiju had tried to invade the Earth before, they had to retreat because the Earth wasn't polluted enough. I didn't quite hear what the script said there, but it was either carbon dioxide or monoxide but both would be real pseudo-science.

Concentrations of carbon monoxide (which is quite shortlived in the atmosphere due to the huge presence of oxygen) and dioxide in the atmosphere were higher in the time of the dinosaurs. Carbon dioxide (wat most people would call 'the pollution') is at 0.03% of the atmosphere, but was considerably higher in the Jurassic period. It was at 10%. The time of the dinosaurs would be way better suited for an invasion.

The depletion of the ozone layer would also be quite stupid, in that case the Kaiju should be dying by the time the movie ends because it is estimated to get smaller and smaller by 2020 due to the regulations introduced in the 80s and 90s.

Maybe they didn't like the higher oxygen concentration back then?

I recall him saying "carbon monoxide polluted oceans," but he was talking fast so those may have been separate things.

As for the atmosphere, maybe there was also too much oxygen as well as a too high atmospheric pressure for them. There was a lot more difference in the atmosphere back then beyond CO and CO2. I wouldn't take it too seriously, the main point he was trying to get across was that the environment was different enough that they waited.

Almost 10 hours later and I now know what this nagging feeling I have about this movie. Also I was asleep for 8 of them :p

The other jaegers were basically utterly useless. We only hear of the power and might of crimson typhoon and Cherno alpha but they get destroyed within minutes of their first on screen fight. Same for striker eureka except you see him winning once through a news clip.

You can argue that the Kaiju were just that strong but even then it sounds like a excuse.
It felt like a power rangers episode where the main characters can't do shit until red ranger shows up.

I actually like that, it got the point across that they were in a desperate state due to the Kaiju that were getting stronger and stronger. I also liked that for example Cherno & Crimson Typhoon had a limited time on screen yet you had a feeling they were badass and were in LOTS of fights before yet were destroyed after a brief fight. It's a bit like Obi-Wan in Episode 4 if you will.

You might be right, some people also thought he said that. Problem there is that carbon monoxide can't pollute water. Carbon monoxide is dangerous in small spaces, but in water it would form carbon dioxide and hydrogen.

Honestly, it just bothers me because it is supposed to be some green aesop, but it doesn't make any sense to do a green aesop like that when comparing the dinosaur time with now. If he just said the atmosphere was different, I wouldn't have cared much about it.

Don't overthink things guys. I doubt this was ever thought these detail through, we are talking about monsters vs robots. It makes sense if you want it to.

It would have been nice if we learnt less about the Kaiju, scrap the whole dinosaur part, just leave it at alien invaders wanting Earth. Actually, instead of talking about the dinosaur period, talk about why the portal only opens every so often.

Well, they were category 4 (first cat4 encounter iirc) and packing weapons the Jaegers didn't know about. The Kaiju used the element of surprise for maximum effect.
Plus, there's the line from early in the movie. Jaegers are only as good as their pilots.

They've fought Cat 4 Kaiju before. These were the largest and heaviest, though, and they had also been crafted specifically to take out Jaegers, just like the previous one was created with an axe-face to take down the Coastal Wall.

wish we could have seen it in action

One of the main reasons for wanting a prequel of some kind.

A high-budget animated series/ova of the rise of the Jaegers would be great! Hopefully a Japanese Studio will take up the idea once the movie is released over there.

Tacit Ronin

Stationed: Tokyo, Japan
Speed: 8
Strength: 7
Armor: 3
Wapons: Fang Blades
Power Moves: Cobra Strike
Body Language: The Fang-Fist Way
Kaiju Kills: 3

My preferred alternate Kaiju origin story would be to make them terrestrial creatures. Take a note from Final Fantasy VII and the Weapons - creatures that the Earth itself spews forth to purge itself of a human infection. Would have added a different moral element to the fighting.

Aww yeah!!!

Or they can't actually use them where they live because they don't have any food for these things. The moment they finish one, they send it through. The bigger question is: why aren't they better at it if they have been doing this for a couple of million of years.

aliens on other planets were clearly scrubs.

I wonder if a sequel got made if they would tie this up by being like, oh our small outpost at rift 4568 got taken out. let's put some real attention towards this planet with more supplies. then we get crazy multi jaeger fights hehe.

Saw it the other day and last day of 3D screening at the theater. 3D was oddly jarring for first 20 min but either grew used to it or just better use of 3D as the film went on. Overall enjoyed the hell out of it, but wanted more other Jaeger highlights, like Tacit Ronin, especially Coyote Tango's short cameo and more Mark-I's etc.

I know it's been said, but dat main theme

So fucking awesome.

It's fucking awful, but also incredibly catchy. I've been humming it for days now.

The track Ninja Tracks - Passages [used in the trailer] is still the best in my opinion. Damn shame it wasn't even featured on the OST.

Common military tactics. You first send the scouts to prod and see what your enemy's capable of.
Perhaps it has something to do with the throat being opened and the increasing resources it costs to open it when you send bigger Kaiju through.

But they got faster at it when they were sending bigger Kaiju through. I can understand sending scouts, I can't understand why they get faster at sending bigger Kaiju through in the span of like 10 years; but they haven't made any progress since they tried the Earth first. Presuming they don't need to attack Earth, but they can attack others too, it would be even stranger.

They need to learn what the expensive big boys go up to. The first Kaiju go down pretty fast, only limited data is gathered. They send bigger and better that can last longer in a fight with a Jaeger, thus gathering more data. As they get more information, they can specify the next wave more accurately, slowly building up to a force tailored to fight our defenses specifically.

Kaijus are the Jaegers of their homeworld, if I had to muster a guess.

I got the same impression. Instead of designing machines, they used bio-engineering. Would explain why they are all genetically the same, and just altered during growth for their individual features.

What would have been great is if when we saw Japan there was no destruction and was just business as usual.

"What? Oh that? We deal with worse than that on a weekly basis. No big deal."

The russian Jaeger didn't get any action, poor fella got acid thrown at him before he could really get his fists flying :(

Also I just remembered something that really ruined my enjoyment now that I think about it. First thing, how the hell were they able to fix Gypsy so quickly after all that damage he received from the flying Kaiju. I mean the Kaiju attacks at the time were happening more frequently, you can't tell me it just takes a week for them to be perfected? BS! And the Jaegers are damaging cities as much as the Kaiju, who really is the beast here? Film sucks man.
/sarcasm

"To fight monsters, we created monsters of our own."

When Gipsy entered their home world and you saw those things looking up at it. I was like "Yeah motherfacka!, bringing the fight to you!" The film is so damn fun. This is why the rule of cool was invented.

am i allowed to fantasize about a sequel already? because ya'll gonna get it either way!

i know i wont get what i wish for and thats good because i love being surprised, especially by del toro. dat hellboy 2 hnnnng. i think i read that GDT will take the sequel in the future by 8 years? if so i am going along with that and say that during the 8 years the portal re-opens (duh) and obviously i think we will see a lot of the world outside honk kong.

-i know we will see gypsy danger 2.0 but do you think we will see everyone else too? or just new jaegers?
-would be great to have a lot of kaiju, more of a focus for them.maybe full on war here.
-i would love to see daylight fights too, we would all love too.
-even more sci-fi. kinda mix of post-apocalypse/military world. an example would be if a part of the world has gone hybrid living style, having cool buildings that are on industrial(huge) hydraulics that when attacked by a kaiju it will bring all the buildings down deep underground so a sorta half underground half above ground lifestyle. obliviously something goes wrong and the buildings cant go down-utter destruction oh yeah!
-imagine a mobile shatterdome?
-mako and raleigh? i dont know if i necessary need them to be leads again but that doesnt mean i didn't love them in PR. also i would love to see mako going into the drift to see marshall pentecost would be nice. would love to see raleigh become a marshall himself but i think that might go to herc.
-make a human character a villain, i kinda want to see what that would be but i dont want it to ruin the pace of the film, so it depends.
-how about a rogue jaeger, that then saves the day? i wouldnt mind.

Yes, but why is it faster to make the big ones?

Gypsy Danger is analog, the rest are digital.

What the fuck?

The power generator is "analog" according to the making of book. Cherno would also have been immune to the EMP if it was still around since it also had a traditional nuclear reactor.

Who cares. Watch the giant freaking robot smash that Kaiju's face! Fuck me this movie's action delivered.

I was like Eddie Izzard in the theater.

You fuck my wife?! You fuck my wife?!

Saw the movie last night. Liked it, but it needed to focus more on the Jaeger mythos and the construction and testing program. Best robots in a movie.

I don't think that the predictions/calculations for the clock make much sense unless the kaiju were being sent out at the maximum rate allowed by the rift. I doubt it would be possible to calculate the arrival of the next kaiju if the rift weren't the limiting agent.

Lets go fishing is now immortalized as one of the best bad ass catchphrases.

Cherno really got the short end of the stick, we didn't even get to see him throw a punch. I hope the deleted scenes show him in proper action.

Huh? Are you forgetting about how he freaking elbow-dropped Otachi and then put her in a headlock and repeatedly piston-punched her in the face? That was pretty darn sweet, if you ask me.

But yeah, both Cherno and Crimson needed more screentime, even if they only got a Best Jaeger-style newsclip.

Damn I missed it. Don't know how but gonna watch it again today.

Had a talk with a buddy of mine at work about what a sequel might look like and we both kind of settled on the idea of the earth's governments deciding that while building a small army of Jaegers is not really cost effective constantly perfecting maybe 5 or 6 of them is. Fast forward like 15 or 20 years and you have earth's 5 defenders carted around the planet in super fast transports - and each one is capable of fighting off 3 or 5 Kaiju at one time.

Would be awesome - aliens get pissed and send like 5 through at once just to say "fuck you" and they all get their asses handed to them by a crazy insane Beast Mode Gypsy Danger.

It's crazy just how much FUN this movie was. Really hope they do something else with the property.
