I saw this last night with a buddy. I'm not into anime our mechas in general but HOLY COW this was such a great and fun movie. Sign new up for any and all merchandise. Can't wait to pick up the 3D Blu-ray. Del Toro out did himself.

Saw the movie the other night. I liked it okay. I was pretty disappointed that so many of the robot fights took place either at night or in the water (or both, in most instances). I wanna see everything that's going on!

Had a talk with a buddy of mine at work about what a sequel might look like and we both kind of settled on the idea of the earth's governments deciding that while building a small army of Jaegers is not really cost effective constantly perfecting maybe 5 or 6 of them is. Fast forward like 15 or 20 years and you have earth's 5 defenders carted around the planet in super fast transports - and each one is capable of fighting off 3 or 5 Kaiju at one time.

Would be awesome - aliens get pissed and send like 5 through at once just to say "fuck you" and they all get their asses handed to them by a crazy insane Beast Mode Gypsy Danger.

It's crazy just how much FUN this movie was. Really hope they do something else with the property.

I think with all that commotion under the ocean at the end of the film the sequel should show Godzilla and Cathulu waking up all cranky and ready to wreck shit up.

Finally got to see this today - man alive, that Hong Kong fight was something else, I haven't had that kind of "holy crap can't believe what I'm seeing" feeling since Pelennor Fields in ROTK. And that main theme!

On the downside, I felt like they created a bigger and better world than the film ended up showing us - once they were in the shatterdome it was all a bit too isolated, less outside world involvement or impact. The Hong Kong ghetto was a nice break from that, I would've liked more. Some extra political details on why they pressed on with the clearly hopeless wall program would also have been good.

I also agree it was a shame the Russian and Chinese jaegers got caned before they had a chance to really let rip. Perhaps a kaiju attack as Becket and Pentecost approach the shatterdome, they get caught up in it, Cherno Alpha arrives to put an end to it, ensuring their safe arrival and illustrating its power, making the later thrashing all the more dramatic.

Anyway, overall - loved it.

That is easily my only real complaint about the film. The nighttime/water fights were definitely tough for me to follow--this is what made the main fight in Hong Kong so great since it was well-lit in comparison.

And I still think the "For my family!" moment should have been saved for the climactic battle at the Breach. Don't get me wrong, it was fucking awesome as is, but it would have made me shit myself if it had come with everything on the line (and its meaning would have included the death of her surrogate father.)

Damn, you're right. As awesome as all the action is, they really needed another pass over the script to tighten things up.

So the movie has done $224,026,000 world wide and it hasn't premiered in Brazil, China and Japan, that's good news right?

I mean, what's stopping them from sending submarines or some other type of underwater transport as well? The kaiju aren't able to detonate nukes or else they would have blown both of the Jager up long before they got to the hole, nor will a nuke go off just because it's crushed by a big monster.

Submarines..?

It's got to do at least 400 mil to break-even, which doesn't seem at all possible. A sequel is out of the question.

No it doesn't. Budget was 190 mill, and it is well on its way to exceed that by double... minimum.

I watched the movie recently, the only thing I found cheesy was the acting at times. Like the "speech" before going off to battle, was cringe worthy. Otherwise, fantastic movie, I hope they can get some better actors next time though.

found it really enjoyable and fun. there a couple fuck yeah moments, but my favorite was the activation of the sword (second favorite was hannibal crawling out of the baby kaiju).

Has anyone heard or read something about more Pacific Rim comics? apparently Travis Beacham has sort of confirmed that there will be more and that he wants to show more of Tacit Ronin in those new comics.

If true then it's awesome and I hope they show more of Cherno Alpha and it's pilots too.

400m seems entirely possible now and even below that its likely Legendary might choose to continue since it did so well for a new franchise they fully own.

And the licensing continues. People should see the writing on the wall by now, a specialty NECA toyline that has been greenlit for a minimum of 3 waves, very high end collectible statues by Sideshow, a popular Heroclix line by Wizkids that is selling out (seriously cases are now 2x what they actually should cost), and now even more comics.

But it totally underperformed in the US so that is apparently all that matters for the people not realizing if it does well overseas then a sequel would probably do better overseas (aka make even more money).

The scale on this image is totally wrong. Knifehead is only 315ft long, quite a bit shorter than Ohio-class submarines US navy current has (560ft). Even Slattern, the only Cat V kaiju, is only 36ft longer than Ohio-class.

No, it's not, because that submarine in the picture is one of those small science-submarines, not a big military one.

It's possible since they are both Mark-1 Jaegers. Tacit Ronin has the best Jaeger design Ive seen so far!

Im currently working on a t-shirt design for it.

I just got back from this. Not the greatest movie ever but it was FUN. Really hope we see more. Some of the most fun I've had at the movies in a LONG time.

Was it really a good idea to rely entirely on a huge, irreplaceable mech to deliver the nuke?
Because the organisation only has four Jaegers, and nothing else. This attempt by Pentecost is nothing more than the last stand of an organisation that will be closed down soon. Remember, at the 'start' of the movie he gets budget for another eight months just to make sure he shuts up, but he isn't supported by the big brass anymore. The wall is their solution.

The Jaeger organisation doesn't own submarines, the world government doesn't care about the plan.

A casual moviegoer friend of mine saw Pacific Rim a few weeks back and thought the action was balls-to-the-wall amazing. However, he thought the film was pretty average and was brought down by the cliche'd character arcs. I dunno, as we've discussed multiple times in this thread, I felt like the cliche character arcs were part of its charm.

When Stacker is at the wall asking Raleigh to come back, and Raleigh walks just to the side of Stacker and, not looking over to him, talks past him about how he was still connected to Yancy and doesn't want to come back, that shit was anime cheese at its finest. "I'm going to walk over near you, but not to you. I'm going to talk, but I'm going to look off past you, not at you." It makes me laugh every time. It's just so overdramatic.

Yeah I wish locations like the Jaeger graveyard would be more prominent in the movie, as opposed to having the entire movie take place inside two hallways of the Shatterdome.

There's also a small glimpse of a defeated Horizon Brave in the movie. Ya, I would've loved a bit more screen-time of the defeated Jaegers fighting or something.

Agreed. That's why I can't really complain when people complain about the cheesiness, since I loved the corny anime influences so much.

My favorite anime influenced scene was Chau's introduction. I could almost see the anime shine on his shoes.

I do think it was kinda funny how apparently only 1 scientist on the entire planet saw the pattern that the time between kaiju attacks was halving between every event. He even had some big ass chart on a chalkboard to try and figure it out, as if someone at the Hong Kong station with a gigantic clock wouldn't realized that the numbers were halving every time they reset it.

Also, I just have to say that the Jaeger names are consistently fantastic. I've been sitting here trying to think of some, but I haven't actually been able to come up with one I like better than the ones in the movie.

stop trying to find logic is this movie , because there is no logic. 100% of every decision made in this movie makes no fucking sense, but Giant Robots fighting Monsters

After watching this movie, it got me hyped to watch some mech anime. You guys recommend any mech animes that inspired Pacific Rim?

Neon Genesis Evangelion. Try to find the original show and the movie called End of Evangelion. Think Pacific Rim that tries to screw your mind every episode, it involves three huge robots fighting gigantic monsters in Tokyo. The Pacific Rim writer is a huge fan of the show, and you'll notice it.

Holy crap, I loved this film. Was simply too busy to set aside time for it until today, so cleared the schedule and saw a matinee with my father. Wasn't sure how he'd take to it and we almost saw The Wolverine (next time) but he thoroughly enjoyed it as well. And surprisingly, were about 20 other people in the theater.

Film pretty much gave me what I wanted, a realistically gritty, heavy-hitting mech-vs-monster movie populated by adults and without the Japanese school brats (even though I've watched many of those, and currently watching Fafner on Hulu which is fairly agreeable so far).

Hopefully this continues to do well enough on a world-wide basis to pick up where we left off with Raleigh/Mako (I like how there was obviously something between them but no reason to seal the deal before any sequel) and the entertaining scientists.

I was planning on getting this, but at the last minute I opted for the Neca figure of Gipsy Danger. Artbooks are awesome, but I find that I hardly ever browse through them more than once. However, this artbook in particular is filled to the brim with bonus stuff like leaflets, posters and stuff like that.

Definately picking it up somewhere down the line, if only to support the movie and the love that went into making the book.

So for me that's the Shinkawa poster, Gipsy Danger action figure and the artbook. Merchandising ftw.

Might pick up the Pacific Rim novelization, seems well received on Amazon. Has anyone here read that?

I've heard that it adds some great stuff to the table, such as an exploration of the Jaeger graveyard and fight scenes for many Jaegers not seen in the movie (i.e. Nova Hyperion and Echo Sabre). Go for it if you want to!
