Killzone Mercenary Beta Discussion

So I'm basically doing a media blackout of this game, no beta or anything either until I can really get my hands on the finished product. Just came in to ask what people are thinking so far? Is the response good? Really good?
Thanks!

Killzone is by far one of my all time favorite shooters, I have played and bought every game even on the psp since the beginning and I really wish I had a chance to test out the beta..I'd prob. give up a pinky toe or something for a beta code now..lol..to everyone who's testing the beta already I am wicked jealous of you..Anyone who doesn't have a Vita that got a code who would like some good karma in their life please hook me up..please and thanks.. lol..

I heard 2 was really slow? I put my sensitivity up and I'm moving like a breakdancer?

Hurts my ability to discuss the game since not played 2&3 to relate.

Calling the beta on 21st open if you still need those home keys is dumb.

Those flying things can be tough, luckily it seems to lock on when they are closeby and you get a shot in.

I don't own a vita, but if I do get the Killzone Mercenary beta code, I will definitely give it you!

The incendiary grenade is your best bet for taking down a mantys drone, as you can trigger it to explode midair.
Either that or use a jammer. :-)

If you have some money to spare, give the STA-3 a go - and if you are feeling especially cruel, try out the tranq gun :-D
The supply armour has the nice side effect of doubling the number of grenades you hold. 4 flashbangs? why not!

First you touch one icon which corresponds to the two parts in the middle icon, and then you touch the middle icon. Two parts are then removed and now you do that once more, only this time it's easier.
Ahhh, I think I got it. Took me a while lol, thanks

---
Any suggestion on what to buy? Weapons, armor and such

Thanks will give that a try...haha just made my next purchase the m2 (tranq gun) :P

i didn't buy a lot before but there was this assault rifle which had worse range than the standard gun but a really good firing rate, great for close-medium range combat - better than the standard one imo, and pretty quiet too. Will try and find the name today.

I'm not sure what the counter for the tranq gun is though (other than a nearby teammate? :).
Pretty much everything else has a decent counter though.

For example, if the skyfury is causing you issues, then get infiltration armour and you won't be highlighted on the camera feed. Also your footsteps are silent, making audibly locating enemies very useful.

Ohh. I also love the gas grenade. It doesn't get many kills but really screws up your day :-) Hearing the screaming is oddly satisfying... *ahem*

Haha nice, didn't know that about the armour, great tip. Wanted to try out the gas grenade too but yeah it sounded really evil lol. Wasn't just smoke. The wincing you do when you're on the floor is pretty...gruesome.

How the hell do all of you not have the beta, it was a prize during the E3 Home Event

They were giving them away like candy

Jesus some of you really need to dust off the dirt on your PS3's and log in from time to time

Jesus, some of you really need to read about the beta and realize this is a different phase instead of ironically chastising people. :D Most of us applied for the closed beta and got the Home key but that doesn't automatically mean we're in. This wasn't an "everybody wins" beta.

Open beta is in a few weeks but people are asking about the closed beta just like any other game with multiple phases.

I really hope this game sells well just based off of these impressions. This could be a make or break moment for the Vita in regards to big exclusives so I hope previous shitty Vita games didn't scare too many people off from this one since it seems to be quite amazing.

I think this is the first beta I've applied for and didn't get in. Shame because it looks good. I have a code from Home, so I suppose it's not that bad.

Probably the same for me.

I probably won't bother with the beta later this month, seeing as it precedes the games release by two weeks. But I did want to get a feel for the game.

But it's probably for the best. I'll give the game a few months and if it isn't on PS Plus, it'll probably be a fair bit cheaper.

I planned on waiting a bit but I'm afraid of the MP community being too small by that time.

How is a first person game on the Vita? It seems like a waste to me on a small screen, wouldn't third person shooters make more sense?

Trust me, GG Cambridge did one hell of a job

Shit looks fucking gorgeous

Once you adjust to the controls, you go, oh shit, that was smart of them to do that

Seriously, they really hit it out of the park with this

This game looks soooooooooo good. hhhnnnnngggg. And I didn't even get a beta key!

The mercenary aspect of this game sounds damn promising.

Can't wait to try guerrilla warfare too.

Totally agree with this. Really well designed.

Anyone having latency issues tonight? Just got booted from 2 matches in a row. Signal strength isn't usually an issue for me in this room so just wondering!

How is the gyro aim? Is it limited to just the sniper rifle, or can it be used on any scope?

But really how is the gyro aim?

Any scope. Works pretty well too. You can flip the x and y axes and adjust their sensitivity too.

Yeah, it's really renewed my view of the Vita's potential. It's capable of so much as this game shows.

I never lost faith. but yeah, did get a nice boost :D - need some more quality developers on this thing and it could be much more of a match with ps3 games. criterion lost their magic, a little.

SOO gutted this is US only, really want to try it.

Damn it SONY, make it available for all PS plus users at least :P

I really thought NFS MW would have looked a lot better than it did. I mean, the game was still GREAT, but it sure wasn't pretty, and it even ran fairly poorly, and I expected more from Criterion who had never made a game lower than any system's native res. I'm sure they could have done a lot more if they had dedicated more time to the Vita version, but what can ya do.

How does interrogation work?

Interrogation in multiplayer works like this:

With a regular weapon from time to time if you don't completely finish someone off they will go down and you can do the short interrogation mini game ( follow the onscreen swipes) and you will get all the player positions on your radar for a short time.

There is also a secondary weapon that is essentially a non lethal dart gun which allows you to take enemies down for interrogation when you shoot them.

If you are stealthy and kill someone from behind i believe you also get the chance to interrogate someone.

Only thing is during the interrogation you are unprotected and you and your target can be killed. So there is a risk to doing it.

Overall this is a fun Vita FPS and its a day one buy for me.

Good matches played yesterday.

I'm rocking a new loadout with a

STA-11 and STA side pistol with Mercenary Armor (more money, less protection) and 2 grenades. No VAN-Guard yet but I might go for the flying pincer because it's pretty good.

The STA-11 is surprisingly good in long range as well and fires really fast. Good for hit and run and you can even pick off enemies form a relatively long distance if you want to.

Same, agree with all the points.

Back to killzone though, I got rid of some of the extra info, and it looks even better!! No crosshair option (when not aiming) makes it a bit hard to tell when your bullets hit but I sort of like that anyway! Feels like hardcore mode in CoD which I used to love. It has a radar though so you're still good. One bug atm in that the killfeed isn't showing for me, even though I haven't set to disable it.

Hmm they looked a lot less faded on Vita

Sent you an invite earlier on, glad you have the game. And the STA-11 is the gun I was trying to remember the name of that I mentioned earlier, I'm pretty sure, love that fast fire rate, and it's not too bad for a bit longer ranges either. Really good upclose though.

NFS Vita was really disappointing. sub-native resolution and lots of frame rate drops.

So will the single player be something like unit 13?

I gotta say i'm not such a fan of that type of game design. I prefer something more story based and less spec-opsy.

It looks so much awesome with some of the extra information turned off, thank goodness for all the settings:

tempted to turn off more, maybe just have the radar

So jealous of you guy fuck it I'm hatin ;)

Game really looks like the PS3 titles why did Netherrealm downgrade MK?
Vita is obviously a very capable machine if it's pumping out these visuals. Is there slowdown?

Holy screen litter they should shrink down the radar. Also make the select button remove screen info in real time that would be ace!
Vita the little system that could, should & will no longer be misunderstood. GO KZ M!!!!!!!

Haven't noticed slowdown at all really :)

The game is very very smooth and barely drops. I only experienced one framerate drop when 3 grenades went off at the same time.

The framerate also drops when you use one of the vanguards where you drop missiles from the sky. But that is at least understandable since you are viewing the entire battlefield, and it doens't affect gameplay since you basically just tap the screen to drop missiles.

I got a beta code during the E3 Home thingy... but I don't remember where I wrote the code down!!!!

EDIT: Surely there's a log of the stuff you won during the E3 Home giveaway, right? Does anyone know where to view that info?

I was playing some Killzone 2 for the first time in years, and I have to say...KZ:M holds up. There are two MAIN areas where KZ2 is above KZ:M: motion blur and gun models. There are other areas where KZ2 is above it, like particle effects and smoke effects, but they aren't as readily apparent at first glance. In fact, just watching side by side, the environments look better on KZ:M, and so do the character models.

There's just something weird about the look of the M82 on KZ:M though. I'm not sure what it is, but it just doesn't look too great. I guess in KZ:M it looks like the gun is made of glossy plastic and in KZ2/3 it looks like it's made of metal. The main issue is with the front area of the gun, whatever that's called. Geometry looks off:

The other gun models don't seem to have as big of a visual difference. But I brought up gun models because the lack of real time self-shadowing on the gun models is definitely one of the bigger differences between the games. Then there's the motion blur, but it's not as big of a difference if you compare it with KZ3, where the motion blur is heavily toned down. It was crazy though, because going back to KZ:M right after playing some KZ2, KZ:M looked better to me at first glance. It was more crisp, more colorful, and the amazing reflections of KZ:M aren't present in KZ2. Textures look better on KZ:M, too, and again, character models looked more detailed up close.
