Having second thoughts about getting a PS4 during the launch

There is literally zero chance that launch titles are going to suddenly materialize out of the blue 3 months or less from launch.
 
I too own a Wii U and a PSVita...
Am feeling the same thing. Im not in any rush to get a PS4, but I probably will, cause I love new gadgets :)
I still have plenty of PS3 games to finish, and I know after playing PS4 I wont be able to go back to PS3...

I'm in Australia, so PS4 will be expensive, so I'll just get my brother to bring one back for me when he visits from the USA :)

Wii U is looking good for Xmas tho, with DK and Mario :D
And PSVita with Tearaway!
 
Originally intended to get a PS4 around Christmas 2014.

Got seduced by Cerny, put in a pre-order.

Bought enough games in the Steam Summer sale to last me at least a year, if considered next to my PS+ Vita and PS3 backlog.

Cancelled pre-order, changed avatar from Knack to Limbo, went back to original plan. Hoping I won't suffer from non-buyer's remorse come launch.

I still have mine preordered, but seeing as how I don't seem to be the only person feeling like this, I think it's likely I may end up canceling my preorder as well unless something mindblowing awesome is revealed at gamescom.

Even when I was kinda hyped for the PS4 around E3, I knew I wasn't very hyped about the games. As limited that Nintendo's showing was at E3, I kept saying to folks I knew that I was most interested in playing what Nintendo showed. I can't wait to get my hands on Zelda WWHD, Donkey Kong, and Super Mario 3D World. I might be part of the problem why Nintendo isn't innovating enough or something, but I can't help it.They just look like great fun games! I wish Bayonetta 2 was this year, because that looked great too. Sonic Lost World looks awesome.
 
I am too, but mainly because of money issues. Among other things, I need to replace parts of my computer. While in theory that can wait, there are games and programs I'm using, "now," that'd benefit greatly from buying those parts, where as I'd mainly buy a PS4 for games I expect to come out months after launch.

Almost settled on cancelling it. Just, kinda hate giving up on finally getting a console on launch time. Though logically I know its not all its cracked up to be.

Edit: I will wait a little longer, on the off chance that something crazy is announced soon for launch. Kinda doubt it though, I don't think Sony would wait this long to get excitement going for launch titles.
 
Never buy a console at launch.

1. Software selection is always terrible
2. Possible hardware defects
3. Later pricedrops/bundles will be much better value
 
i'm gonna wait to get a next gen system until there's something i know for a fact i will play. i'll probably wait till there's a good fighting game on the ps4. if the new smash bros/mario kart is good then i might get a wii u first if they drop the price on the console.
 
Really depends on how easily you feel you can get a system post-launch. If there is really no reason to believe that you can't buy it without any issues once a price cut has hit, you should hold off if the launch lineup doesn't interest you. However, if you are going to buy it before a cut, anyway, there is virtually no point in not getting it right away. Still, if you see a somewhat significant amount of exclusive appeal in getting the system (cross-generation games should not count at all, here), you can't go very wrong with an immediate purchase. In the end, it is all about how much you think you would use it before an eventual revision.

I guess if it was fully backwards compatible, you could at least use it to replace your PS3 and use the new functionality as the games start coming in.
 
I'm going to get it day one, but won't be getting any games until 2014. I still have my + membership to tide me over until January and I'll probably be getting another years worth after that.

I'm on the same boat as you though, no launch title as of now looks that appealing to me. All the games I would want for the PS4 are slated for release 2014 and after.
 
PS4 Day 1 for me!
Nothing is more exciting, than having a new system day 1 and playing/talking with fellow gamers (at home or on the internet) :-)

1. You're going to buy it eventually, might as well start enjoying it sooner rather than later.
2. If you're going to worry about possible future pricedrops, you'll just end up waiting forever. There's always going to be a better deal down the road.
3. In Sony's case, they have an unfortunate habit of deleting hardware features as they go along.
 
I need to get in on the free PSN+ games from day one.

I also don't think we'll see a price change anytime within the next couple years.

The only way I could see that happening is if they're smaller PSN titles.

No chance in hell they'll release a game on a system with such a small marketshare just 3 months before it's released.
 
Although there's nothing quite like getting new hardware to play with I think I'll just wait a couple of years before getting one. I've personally never gotten a system at launch. Not worth it imo. Too expensive, no games and there's the looming risk of "birth defects". Better be safe than sorry.

I wonder what would happen if everyone had the attitude of never buying a console at launch. Would the console that you're looking forward to picking up 3 years down the line end up with no support?

Edit: Are the same people saying that hoping that it's going to be successful?
 
You couldn't have expressed better what I'm thinking OP.
That's exactly the same for me (just LBP instead of Hot Shot Golf) and the only game that really impressed me was The Division because it seemed that it was a game that in fact couldn't have been done on current gen but knowing I'm not a big fan of online multiplayer games I'm mostly curious about it.

I'll wait for the big games to come and probably buy a PS4 at the end of 2014 (or Xbox One but chances are very very low knowing my tastes).
 
It won't kill you to wait a while - unless you think there's a danger the console will disappear off store shelves within a month. In which case why would you want one?

Haha exactly, this is precisely why I'm waiting outside of Best Buy all day/night (if necessary) to get mine on day one. I was so jealous when I saw the huge line outside of my local Best Buy for the PS3 launch. It was like someone kicked me in the stomach, I wanted to be a part of that. Not going to miss it this time around.

I actually did that for the Xbox 360. It was so damn cold that night, but my brother and I saw the line at Best Buy, and I knew from a leak I read online how many systems that particular store was going to be getting, so I knew if we got in line, we would each get a system for sure. We were there from 7pm til 10am the following day, and man that was rough. I don't regret it, and the hype was so much fun...but man, I don't know if I could ever do that again, lol.

why would you want a popular console? i don't get it. how is it selling out a knock against it?

The niche that is neogaf, being the hardcore of the hardcore, has very little to do with real sales numbers. Just because a few really dedicated gamers want to wait and really consider their purchases, it's not gonna suddenly shift the tide one way or the other.

If you want proof, look at Xbone being sold out everywhere, Skyrim winning game of the generation fan polls, PC versions of multiplat games usually selling less than their console counter parts. If you took GAF's opinion on these things, they'd all be absolute madness.

This in a nutshell. The fact that people convince themselves not to do something they will regret is interesting.

For me it's all about finishing up current gen. You can have both. I don't see why people make it seem like having both is an issue. I'm still going to be rocking current gen while on my next gen. And slowly but surely current gen will be cut off. All who are doubting themselves will regret it come launch. Trust
 
I have one preordered as well. While it is probably not wise from a financial point of view, I'm just too impatient to wait.
I never actually got a PS3, because when it came out it was already obsolete, I had a better PC and couldn't stand the idea of gaming at 720p - but in hindsight I missed out on quite a few great games, so I'm buying a PS4 at launch to avoid making the same mistake.

I also have a feeling I won't be playing it very much for the first couple of months, since I have a huge backlog of PC titles, plus all the new multiplatform games I will get for the PC instead, so I'm basically buying the PS4 for the handful of Sony exclusives it will get down the line - but I don't care, being an early adopter always feels good! :)

Well there's this rare piece of paper called money that is hard to come by in our house sometimes...lol. I have enough to get some of the games I want, and I could probably squeeze out a PS4 if I really wanted to, but it's not like it'd be easy. Frankly I feel like it's not worth it. By not getting a PS4, it will be easier getting the other games I want for systems I already own.

lol I still remember it...during the first few hours of the evening, the buzz and hype of the crowd was enough to keep us pretty warm for a while..but once it got dark, and real late, and all the stores nearby were closed....it became dead silent. Everyone retreated under their blankets, and it looked like they were all in cocoons, lol
 
I still have the PS4 (and X1) ordered, but to be honest, there isn't a single PS4 game in launch that I would be willing to pay 60e for it, so most likely I'll be canceling my order. The day-1 rush and that nice feeling of owning shiny new toy under TV aren't worth the price without those games. I mean, I have a gaming PC and current consoles, huge backlog of games and BF4 pre-purchased, so that basically covers the gaming for the rest of the year and more. Then there are the Steam winter sales during December and Dark Souls 2 on March, so the next suitable date for a new console purchase is around Q3 2014. And then it's a match between X1 and PS4 offerings that decides my next console.
 
In my opinion is better everyone to wait, I did not buy until this gen my consoles at launch and save me a great deal of money and I got all of my games pretty "bomba" cheap. The only console that I bought after 9 years at launch was the Wii U, I did not regret it but but I can understand why others did.

I will buy a PS4 eventually if Final Fantasy XV will not jump to PC and for some original exclusive titles.

I too am holding off. I will get one eventually, but at present, none of the launch titles appeal to me, and the ones that do are cross generation and will run fine on the Wii U so I'm waiting a year for a library to build

I actually meant it disappearing off shelves like the Wii U might one day...but I see your point.

My point is that in reality you'll be able to walk in to a shop and buy it whenever you're ready. No one will die if you don't do that on launch day.
 
I cancelled my preorder, but I game on a fairly nice PC. If I didn't have a nice PC, I'd be fucking pumped for the PS4. As it stands, I'm waiting for better exclusives.

I'm in the same boat. Any of the games I was interested in are all 2014 titles and beyond, and nothing at launch interests me right now (from what we do know).

I'll probably hop in when Destiny hits if I can convince my friends to make the jump with me, otherwise i'll probably wait till MGS or XV hits. If I could have PS3 BC or any of my PSN digital titles, i'd be much more inclined to buy a lot sooner, maybe even launch day, but there's no use buying a system with zero games on it I wanna play.

All the multiplats I ALWAYS play on PC, so those are not an option for me at all.
 
I completely agree with you, OP.

The same reasons are holding me from buying a PS4 (or even a 180, though some games on the 180 launch up line resonate better with me) right now. There isn't a single game that interests me enough to make me feel like investing the money on buying the system.

Besides the hype of a new machine I just can't justify another console right now. Mostly because I would have to get rid of the PS3 to clear some space for a new console. And there are a few things I want to play on my PS3 still. And this is not to mention the massive backlog of games I've got on PS3 alone and the fact that I can not transfer those games to the PS4...

I'm (cautiously) excited for FFXV, and I'm definitely looking forward for new announcements. But now, apart from the hype, there is not much that would make me buy a PS4 at launch. I'll probably wait until the end of 2014/beginning of 2015...

It's true, that X1 launch games looks better compared to PS4. But personally, I'm having similar second thoughts with my X1 order as with PS4 order. Meaning, lets skip the launch purchase and reevaluate the situation again in Q3 2014.
 
Pre-ordered PS4 with DriveClub for 419€ as well as Assassins Creed 4 CE and Watch Dogs CE just a couple of days ago.

I got all my Sony consoles day one. The PS2 dvd-drive died 2 months ago, but seriously, it's like almost 13 years old.

I'm actually sure I won't play the PS4 more than 100hours (probably even less) until feburary next year (thanks computer science for raping my brain <3 ). However, I want to support the platform which I want to win the console war. More sold consoles -> more games. Except for Nintendo.
 
I've decided not to get one at launch. I still have games to catch up on on PS3 and then there's GTA V coming out too which will keep me occupied. I'll probably buy one when Infamous Second Son comes out.
 
You're right OP, it's all hype. There will probably be no good reason to get a PS4 until 2015 at least... I'm getting it day one anyways.
