Nvidia Shield Thread

This is one of the frustrations I'm having so far. Not only does it highjack the entire display, but it changes my resolution down to 720p and rearranges all my desktop icons. It's also causes an issue when I need to click "ok" or "continue" on a third party piece of software like Uplay, where I have to physically be at my PC instead of using the Shield.

re the icons try DesktopOK. you can save and restore positions for different resolutions. i went searching that out because every time I installed a new video card driver my icons would be scrambled

Thank you! That is such a huge help and solves one of my primary gripes with the Shield so far.

So my Shield "Departed.a sort facility" in New York 31 hours ago.

Can't help but compulsively refreshing mh tracking, even if there hasn't been a change over the last day.

Awesome! There isn't too many people who have this device, but at least the fact that they all are crazy internet early adopters will lead to a lot of cool shit being discovered in the coming weeks!

So how is this for game emulation? I won't be getting a gaming PC for a few more months but I want one of these for retro gaming. My old PSP Go's non-removable battery no longer holds a decent charge and hell will freeze over when I use a touch screen to play retro games on the go.

Showing 299.99 for me, mine should arrive today :)

Lucky bastard, mine is still in Toronto.

Purolator tracking is killing me, I should just stop looking at it.

From all the reviews and comments for this device, it is the best portable emulation machine available.

I would not jump onboard purely for retro gaming. Are you on Android?

Instead, get the emulators from the Play store, download a bluetooth controller app, and enjoy.

I use the Gameklip, which is nice and convenient for me.

I don't like burning through my phone's battery, plus when I used my dual shock one of the analog sticks broke in my bag.

I absolutely need something like this for my iPhone 5.
I hope a third party manufacturer will release something like it, now that we're getting gamepad support on iOS 7.
Not using a DS3 controller of course, but a similar controller with a phone clip.

I love off-tv/remote-play so much that I might just get an Nvidia Shield for my PC.

Already bought a Vita used to await the PS4, but feeling to stick mainly to PC for atleast a year now.

It's an awesome feature on the Wii U and if the controls are top notch on the Shield, I may just bite.

The current list of games compatible look promising.

If that's the only reason you would want to buy it - I'd hold off for a bit. Let the devs/hackers get their stuff updated so it works more seamlessly with the Shield. I'll admit - I haven't futzed with it a whole lot - but as far as everything "just working" - that's not nearly the case. You need to mess with a lot of configs/etc. to get emulators to work 100% properly. I'm not there, yet personally. I'm new to Android so take that as you will. If you're a vet you may have no issues.

I dont really get the big picture behind the shield.

Dont get me wrong, I can imagine what Nvidia wants to achieve with it. Showing off its hardware, backing it up with marketing, so people connect the name Nvidia with powerful mobile hardware. This way mobile phone/tablet manufactures can market their products with slogans like "powered by Nvidia" or the like, hence making marketing for Nvidia and hoping for better sales.

Thats actually a really clever approach (if marketing doesnt fail like it did back in the day with the Ngage, though I dont know if Nokia had any plans at all)

But from a consumer standpoint, I dont quite get it.

By now there are so many devices that can emulate everything at least up to the N64, many can also do PS2/XBox stuff, no real need for a shield, unless you dont own a device that can emulate games (which is unlikely, since the shield is targeted at a very hardcore audience)

You can not use the Shield as a mobile phone or a tablet, meaning you still have to carry those things arround as well, making it less mobile than you wish (unless you always carry a backpack).

Third, I dont think many people want "deeper" experiences when it comes to mobile gaming. There is no real need for better graphics or physis or AI. All of that would just add to the developent cost of games, but the more complex your game gets, the smaller your target audience will be (still talking about mobile games).

I simply dont see alot of people playing epic RPG's or immersive FPS's games on the bus. And you dont need all that horsepower for Angry birds, same goes for that big ass controller.

Fourth, that thing about streaming games. I mean really? Whats so cool about that, I really dont get it.
First of all there is the problem with power consumption. Maybe americans dont see it as a big deal, but I personally have a problem with running a full blown PC to render a AAA game and using several hundred watts for that, just so I can play it on a tiny screen on my couch, 10 feet away, when I could play it with a bigger screen, better sound and probably better controls directly on my PC.

That feature is rarely usefull for the Vita or WiiU, since the TV is more often used by several people at the same time. But your gaming PC? When was the last time you played a game and someone came in an wanted to use the PC for ... I dont know interwebs stuff. People have tablets, phones, notebooks and whatnot for that.

In short:

I dont think mobile gaming will profit immensely from more hardware power (people dont want to play more complex games, mobile indie developer dont have the money or manpower to develop more graphically intense games).

Emulation is something many mobile devices can already do (i know about the problem with controls, but workarounds were already posted) .

Streaming from your PC to your mobile Device imho is rarely useful, also it will become a standard function for mobile devices within the next 2 years or so.

The only thing that would help the shield, or whatever comes after it, is android developers who decide to develop more complex games. And that will only happen when systems like the Ouya gain some mass appeal. So Shield and Ouya actually go hand in hand and should build one ecosystem (shouldnt be problem, Nvidia is invested in the Ouya anyway)

^
It's not a device aimed at conquering anything or being better than anything, per se. It is definitely something that would be more of a toy than a utilitarian item. With that said - the PC streaming and integration component is one of the main selling points, other than that - it's the extremely powerful mobile hardware. So if neither of those appeal to you as a buyer, then you definitely are not in the market for this device.

NVIDIA is selling this item as a platform to show off their mobile hardware. Their "loss" (if there is any) regarding these devices is worth it because they hope a big mobile device manufacturer (or five) will be impressed with Tegra 4 and sign on for the SoC. They are also in the PC streaming game in a big way and this is a safe way to test the waters and let some enthusiasts be the beta/guinea pigs. Win/win for everyone, heh...because I, for one, think this device is underpriced if anything!

Here's the adventure my Shield has taken so far...

Shipped from EDISON, NJ to SECAUCUS, NJ to NEWARK, NJ to LOUISVILLE, KY to MANSFIELD, OH to BUFFALO, NY to MOUNT HOPE, ON to CONCORD, ON

Good lord lol. It's been to so many places just to get from New Jersey to Montreal!

Should be quoted at top of every page.

There are plenty of us who have a PC in one room and a comfy couch a few rooms away, or on a different floor and would like to play our PC games in other rooms in our house depending on the circumstances. Not everyone wants to sit in front of their PC for long periods of time either.

As for emulation, while there are plenty of devices that emulate older systems, IMO this is the first portable device that has emulated them good enough. The controller works good, the framerates are stable, and the sound works well. YMMV

The Shield is definitely a niche product, and I think Nvidia knows that. You may not get the appeal, but considering it's selling well, and plenty of people in this thread are happy with their device and talking about it shows that the Shield has its place.

It's been all over the place lol.

Mine came from Edison, NJ to Newark, NJ, then to Memphis, TN, and now in Texas on its way to me.

I just read the Anandtech Shield review, and it's a lot more positive than I expected. Also surprisingly good display brightness. My dream of PC gaming in the hammock lives!

Nope. You were doing well (up to the N64) and then you had to drag in the 6th gen consoles. (PS2, XBOX, GC)

PS2 emulation is still limited to powerful x86 PCs using PCSX2.

XBOX emulation is still going no where. Emulation on a mobile device? Pffttt.

GC/Wii emulation via Dolphin requires a powerful x86 machine to get full speed. Some games like F-Zero GX still can't be played with full speed even on i7 rigs.

You are really misinformed about the number of devices that can emulate the 6th gen consoles. Educate yourself.

I dont really get the big picture behind the shield.)

You are overthinking it.

It is an Android device that can stream games from you PC anywhere in your house.

Playing Rogue Legacy on my couch while my PC is upstairs is worth it. If it can also play Android games, or encourage devs to tailor games to the platform, it's an added bonus.

Reading the first page of this thread incredible in retrospect. I have never seen a product ridiculed have such a quick turnaround.

I agree, the first half of this thread is negative post upon negative post. With people who most likely never picked one up and played with it. I really like this device. It is a niche product but for PC streaming, android gaming, and emulation it's a nice package. I like the feel of the dual analog sticks as well. The screen is nice, clear, and crisp as is the audio. Honestly needs more games that take advantage of the controller but that's up to the developers, not nvidia.

DraStic (a DS emulator) works great on it. Full speed too.

Agreed and all controls can be mapped as well! Love that you can change the configuration of the screens to suit the game. One of the best initial releases of an emulator like this I've seen.

Got a couple of hours in with my Shield yesterday. Such an awesome handheld, still have so much more to try out on it. Gotta get out of work first.

so i am really asking myself should I get a PS Vita or Nvidia Shield - going to the airport in 2 weeks and have a long ass flight and wait at the air port.

I love PC indie games but I won't be upgrading my 580 graphic card anytime soon & will i only be able to play android games/emulator games mobile?

for

PS Vita - dragon crown/persona look interesting to me and the future compatibility with ps4 is interesting to me...

both have a bright interesting future so someone who has both I'd love your opinions.

Shit. Can't get Guacamelee going. At title screen and it's asking to press the start button. Tried pressing all the buttons but nothing works :/. You'd think the 'start' button would do the trick, but no haha.

Anyone get it going?

Edit: Pressed Start on pc to get the game going, but the game doesn't respond to any of the Shield's buttons. Quite strange...

Ok can a mod change the thread title please?

I keep seeing it and for half a second think it does indeed release tomorrow even though it's been released

Should be changed to something like

"So Nvidia Shields Launched 8/01/13. Anyone?"

or better yet just

"So Nvidia Shields Launched. Anyone?"

Well, shit on me. I ordered one. Wasn't going to do it originally, but after seeing a YouTube demo of the PC streaming, I couldn't resist. There was zero noticeable latency, and that's mind-blowing. I guess we'll see how well it actually works, but I'll be happy with this as a PC streaming and emulator device.

I'm sure it's powerful enough to run N64, DS, and PSP at full speed, right?

I'll lose my shit if this thing is able to stream Dolphin emulator from my PC. Is that at all possible? The idea of a portable GameCube/Wii (even just in a local environment) is such a sexy concept to me. I really think this is going to end up being my end-all emulator device.

The only bummer is I'm going to have to rebuy all of Robert Broglia's emulators on Android, since I previously got them for iOS.

Also, the most recent build supports the button mappings:

That may be possible once someone hacks the PC side of the device.

Every third party controller software I've tried does not receive anything from the Shield, it all goes through the Nvidia software. I will be very happy if someone can get Windows to see the Shield as a controller.

From the display side, as long as you add it to your Steam list and configure the graphics options it should stream now just without controller support.

Really is an amazing device. Using the touch screen to browse gaf is more comfortable than I thought. The screen is gorgeous and bright. The controller feels amazing in my hands. Been streaming Spelunky for awhile and has been flawless.

Overall, couldn't be more pleased with my purchase. Really is an all in one device by using it to browse the web, play emulators, play android games, and stream steam. And the ability to hook it up to a TV is great as well. Good job Nvidia!

Well, it seems that people are quite happy with their purchase! Not a bad start for Nvidia's hardware aspirations, not a bad start at all.

Got mine today.

It's much heavier than I thought, but the hardwaee definitely feels premium. Moreso than the Vita, that is for sure.

Tried a few Android games, worked great as expected. I am going to try out the PC Streaming and I am hoping that I won't have to buy a router tommorow. I will post PC streaming impressions shortly.

Ugh, I know there's some games that can work that aren't on nvidias list but can't seem to run them through the steam store. LFD2 is outside the store and worksfine .

Please let me know if the streaming works well. I've heard some people say that there is a lot of lag if you are away from your router. My router is in the room next to mine. So I'm kind of curious.

Network interference is getting in the way of my streaming and it's fucking annoying.

I agree, when it works it works well. But there are times where games just drop for no reason. Then its back to playable again. Frustrating but its only in beta. They have some wrinkles to iron out.
