Nintendo Downloads - August 2013

I agree that VC could be so much better, but I think people are putting too much blame on Nintendo. They can't force 3rd parties to take part. I'm guessing the Wii U is still too small-time for a lot of publishers to bother.

Obviously Capcom and some others are on board, and I can't imagine Nintendo is prioritizing them over other publishers who are waiting to get on board. Namco's throwing down Galaga and Pac-Man, but will we see the more obscure titles? For now, I think we will have to be happy with games from smaller publishers like Koei and Natsume, for who the minimal returns from VC games will mean more than to a giant company like Square-Enix or Konami.

Again, I think VC could be so much more, but seeing people throw blame at Nintendo's board of directors (like they're spending their time worrying about North America's VC selection) is a bit crazy.

Well, you kinda give all the reason to put the blame squarely on Nintendo right there, and it was the same with Wii and perhaps to a lesser degree 3DS. If Nintendo doesn't lead the way, both with their own vast library of VC, as well as advertising and consistent, strong promotion for the platform, why would third-party publishers be inspired to put forth the effort? The Wii online store was a complete joke. eShop is definitely an improvement, but they still don't seem to be doing enough to make it visible to the general household. They should be shoving digital shopping up front and center. People already know they can buy Mario at Walmart. They just don't know enough even of the existence of the online store and what it has to offer or how it works exactly. We should be receiving early advertising about what's upcoming. Instead, it's still mostly a "big secret" every week.

You have some good points, but if Nintendo dropped all their stuff on VC, I don't know that it would necessarily encourage 3rd party support in the short term, and we'd end up with even longer VC droughts.

I agree that promotion could be so much better, but they are improving - at east with high profile releases. I know people complained about Earthbound promotion, but they gave it a nice trailer, featured it on Nintendo Direct, gave it its own press release, and mentioned it in their NPD PR. Like I said, an improvement, but there is a way to go.

We're getting a bit more of a heads up on what's coming (they pop up on Nintendo's site five or so days before with a trailer). For obscure games (which I want to see more than the big guns), you can't ask for much more, especially when every gaming site will spread the news with minimal effort on your part.

Anyways! I don't want to sound too much like I'm defending Nintendo, I want more from the VC - why do we have 'off weeks' on the 3DS? - but going back to my main point, I think right now with Wii U they are working with what they have.

I hadn't really thought about that until now, but you're right. What is their reasoning behind concealing what VC games will get released when?

I've always said Ninty should send out their weekly PR to your Wii U and 3DS by spotpass notifications (with eShop links). Of course, you can opt-out if you want, but if there are people who are interested in new titles available to download but don't know where to get this information, then they probably won't.

Mighty Switch Force was fantastic on the 3DS. It's time for another eshop game before Etrian Odyssey IV is released. Gaf, help me decide!

I'm currently playing Soul Sacrifice, Ragnarok Odyssey, Xenogears, Hatsune Miku Project Diva 2 and Theatrhythm Final Fantasy. I'd love to use my 3DS more and make some progress on its backlog.

I need a game that is easy to pick up and play besides the games I'm currently playing, games that don't require much dedication from the player and the games being on the short side. What fits this description the best? Pushmo or Art of Balance Touch?

Now I know Pushmo is raved about and it should be a higher priority, but I'm the kind of player who needs to be mentally prepared to play hyped games if that makes sense. I don't like when certain games get hyped too much, raising my expectations to near impossible proportions. So I'm kinda hesitant to play this game and would rather delay it further but I'm not sure whether that's necessary.

Pushmo really is gonna require a lot of juice from your brain. It's incredibly simple to play, though. But there's a lot to do so it's not something you "finish" quickly.

You shouldn't be too hyped for Pushmo. It' a simple puzzle game. It's good, but simple. If Gameboy games are okay, then Donkey Kong or Kirby's Block Ball might also satisfy your needs.

On the previous topic. How much would it cost for a third party publisher to release a new VC game? The way I see it:
- First: the third party publisher digs out either a ROM of their game or their old source code.
- Second: either the third party publisher or Nintendo optimizes the existing emulator to play the game.
- Third: the game is released. The third party publisher receives either a lump sum or a cut of the sales.
I don't see how this would be expensive enough to turn down.

You forget the two most annoying parts:
-make sure you still got the license/rights to even release this game
-get it re-rated for every territory you want to release it in (CERO, ESRB, PEGI, USK, OFLC) which costs a boatload of bells.

Being easy to get into (as in simple) is a big plus. It requiring some thinking is okay as long as it doesn't introduce a lot of mechanics at a fast pace. The fact that there's a lot of content in there is not ideal though. But since it's simple, it should be easy to play and leave once in a while.

Okay, it sounds like Pushmo might be played first. I'll try it tomorrow for sure if there aren't any replies in favour of Art of Balance Touch by then, even though I was pretty curious about that one.

Thammy, I mentioned those games because I already purchased them and am trying to play what I already have. Though I'm definitely going to look into both games you mentioned and see if they're worth getting in the future. Thanks for the suggestions.

And thank you both for replying, it's very appreciated.

Pushmo doesn't have many mechanics. You push blocks and you pull blocks (hence why it's called Pullblox in Euroland lol). That is literally it. It just gets more mind bendy and complex.

Not really. There's also buttons and manholes and junk.

Or just buttons and manholes and no junk.

Oh god, right. Sorry, I totally forgot about manholes and buttons. But they're really nothing that needs explaining. No need to worry about complicated mechanics :)

I would like to add one additional small point.
-Create a digital manual and translate it in EFIGS (only for the EU version of course).
For some reasons every (and I mean every VC game released in Europe) has comes with a translated manual.

Yea thought about that too. I'm guessing you need at least French for Canada and maybe Spanish as well for the North American release.

This is a total no-brainer, and the fact they've never done it completely baffles me. I mean, there has to be a reason for it. Someone in their marketing team somewhere must have mentioned it at some point.

"We just can't figure out why Splinter Cell Blacklist sold poorly on Wii U!"

I can't believe I'm going to spend £5.49 on three Street Fighter games with absolutely no updates or improvements or online play and they aren't even the arcade versions.

I'd always make an exception in SFII Turbo's case, since that game is pure nostalgia but essentially this is just so I can have a lovely Street Fighter icon on my home screen.

Have they confirmed that europe will be getting the american versions? I hope so. As much as I love black borders.

You're welcome, NeoGAF.

"We just can't figure out why Splinter Cell Blacklist sold poorly on Wii U!"

It's the same price on PSN, although it includes 'bonus' DLC goggles or some stupid bullshit. Retail's cheaper as usual. If people want to overpay for a game by a massive amount, then this is their option! =p

Pushmo has been pretty good so far, 26 puzzles cleared. I can see the puzzles becoming very interesting later on. It's exactly what I asked besides the amount of content, but it works with this kind of game. Thanks everyone!

I think that even was in response to my first tweet asking about it. I don't need it to help, I just want an update. Any response as to why it's still not out.

"It's on literally everything else you own. Also, we're busy not doing localization work on our next big title. Enjoy the Binding of Isaac remake in 2017!"
