Report for outsiders from the PS+ open beta for Killzone Mercenary:

You'll want to at least try this game if you enjoy action titles. It controls well, it has interesting gametypes for multi-player, it has a satisfying sense of progression and boy-howdy is it a looker. Beware though: a dropped connection will lose all the progress from a multi-player match, and depending on traffic, the servers tend to be a little finicky for the initial connection. The between-match lobbies are nice, because you get a chance to apply credits you've earned without interrupting your series of games. Subsequent matches connect quickly and smoothly. This simply looks and feels beyond the presentation quality normally seen in handheld games. The community, even at this early stage, seems strong. The system for earning equipment seems designed to encourage long-term play. Games populate to the full 8-players quickly and players so far are courteous and engaged.

I have a hard time seeing everything on my Vita screen. :(
Also doesn't help I haven't played an FPS on consoles in a long time online.

Word, the controles are tough for me, ive gotten so use to kb&m. And the nubs are small. Turning the sensitivity all the way up helps.

Game is amazing so far. I guess the biggest surprise has been the performance online, real smooth so far. I can't wait till this comes out.

Im really surprised at how good the game works. Smooth online play and it feels like a console fps. Very impressed with what ive played.

P.S. Is there voice chat in the game?

Hey, I noticed something in KZM that's not been in KZ multiplayer before.

Holy hell, they brought in the SP's cover system to MP this time.

Not sure how effective it is though, I've not seen others use it, so I have no idea how much it makes you harder to hit other than the fact that I've survived every encounter I used cover in so far.

EDIT: For anyone wondering, it's when you crouch behind a chest high wall. Sorry, it doesn't work around corners like in KZ2/3. Maybe in SP it does.

Never knew about cover! Thanks for that.

I still don't know what sensitivity fits me. I usually crank it to max when it comes to FPS's, but I may have to leave it at default to aim better. Practice will make everything better, lol.

The only issue I have is the spawning..but even then, it doesn't make the game any less fun IMO.

I should try messing around with the HUD and see how it looks afterwards.

If anyone would like to play, feel free to add me: Hispanicguy

I wish there was a dedicated screenshot button on the Vita. 1 button you can quickly press to take one. I appreciate being able to even take screenshots in the first place. Such an awesome feature.

I just got the MP beta and have had no luck getting in on a match. Anyone want to add me for killzone beta, I'm deadlastvita

Is borman your name on PSN?

Some guy with assassin24 in his name destroyed me in the one game I played before I lost connection to the host and all my money. :(

I did manage to get a triple kill though so that was nice.

Damn this game is actually tons of fun. Will definitely buy it. Once again, my Vita has been the best handheld I've every played.

Twice now I've completely lost control of my character. I can access the pause/select menus, but can't move/shoot/swap weapons/etc. not sure what caused it. Getting killed fixed it.

played a round of MP, lots of fun. i was kind of getting used to the controls on the fly but i got the hang of it by the end. game is pretty awesome and already by far the best FPS ever released on a handheld... not saying a lot but the game is good!

played my first round and we won. yay!

cooked dinner, then tried to get into another game and i keep getting "kicked due to lost connection" upon joining any match. hard shut down my vita and tried again, but no luck. it would randomly tell me it couldn't connect to the server either. i have great wifi strength and it connected to the KZ server just fine when i first launched the game. not sure what's going on, but i hope they fix it soon so i can test out the armory...

:\

Man, this game is phenomenal. The controls are solid and the graphics are just gorgeous. I'm still trying to figure out what sensitivity I'm going to stick with, though.

HOLY SHIT. My first game was almost like one of those amazing moments where you play a big game for the first time on a new console in a new generation. I was so amazed that I had to show everyone around me how damn good it looked and how smooth it ran in just sheer amazement. Of course, when I did that, I went from 13-0 to 13-5 but still good for my first game and I'm sure those guys were annoyed. :D

Absolutely phenomenal. For all the talk about the Vita dying, I hope those people buy this game and show Sony that it's worth it because this is amazing.

Note: I'm a fan of KZ2 MP and didn't really get addicted to KZ3 yet I'm loving this so far as it's a healthy mix for a handheld shooter.

This game is pretty fun. Finally a good looking game that is native res AND has a pretty stable framerate.

Right now, it seems people don't get the jist of the capture mini game (took me a bit), or the 'take the enemy prisoner' objectives. I'm just sitting here thinking, "stop killing them dammit, you gotta sneak up on them and triangle their asses!"

Melee standoffs are really exciting!

Also, the networking in this game seems flawless. Very surprising for wifi.

This MIGHT be my first day 1 vita game since Gravity Rush.

I can't be more surprised than I am now of a title. Controls really, really well, Frame rate is smooth for the most part. definitely on my wish list now.

Edit: I finally know how to hack !!

To hack the vanguard, just fit the correct blocks into the triangles. Like a mini puzzle game...just be sure there's no one around to kill you while you hack it. Probably takes about 3 seconds to hack it.

i agree the the amount of functions feels forced and cramped into the controls... but i got used to it for the most part and its not as much of an issue anymore.

the game itself more than makes up for it. and if i could choose between this or having an fps lacking functionality and leaving a lot to be desired i'd prefer the former.

how long have you been playing the beta for?? give it a chance for you to get used to it. im not one for MP or FPSs and i've gotten addicted to this one.

i think the melee is implemented really well. i hated it at first because i didn't know how to use it properly. you just can't go around meleeing everyone, its more of a selective tactic. its slow.. but instakill. you can't just go around like in halo and starting thumping away at people, which is what i originally was doing and kept getting killed.

i dont like how i don't know when its going to be melee or counter or interrogate...knowing when all those extra swipes are coming would be good.

I'll give it more of a chance later on this week when my PC download of Splinter Cell finishes up
fuck Uplay
but I gave it like 15-30 mins and two rounds and I can't see myself buying it for the multiplayer because 1) I don't really care for Killzone [2 left a bad bad taste in my mouth] and 2) cramped controls that get in the way of the action and I'm very selective about my shooters when it comes to these. I have to enjoy the multiplayer time for me to devote time to it. If it isn't clicking with me, it's a pass.

But again: I'd probably buy it for the singleplayer and to support the game coming out and showing that FPS can be done on the system if they fix the aim accleration, which feels like they did for me here. Only problem is the sticks on the hardware itself. Too small for long-range shooting it seems to me.

Is melee brokenly good or people just don't get how to counter it yet? I've been able to swipe shank my way to victory and gather intel like crazy and I'm usually pretty ass at these things for a few weeks so something must be wrong. I did have one standoff with someone who kept countering it and backing up to shoot me and I kept going back at him until I was successful.

I'm gonna be honest, I'm not going for the objective whatsoever. I'm mainly just getting body counts, trying to get over 40 kills every game. The mini game is confusing, or maybe it's too intense for me. Everytime I attempt to get it, my time runs it and I get killed. Cant wait for basic deathmatch on this. It's amazing.
