Killzone Mercenary Beta Discussion

Gonna pass on this game after trying the Beta. FPS's still feel a bit awkward on the vita even with the dual analog sticks...due to thier very limited range and size.

It is incredible looking though.

Here is a fact their wont be real fps gamers in these handheld gaming devices, just enjoy the MP in bursts and thats it

Opinions =/= facts.

I'm not sure what classifies as a real FPS gamer, but I have no problems with playing this for hours on end and I'm a big gamer so I'm not sure why I can only enjoy this in bursts. Sure, it will never be the biggest thing in gaming, but FPS fans that own a Vita shouldn't have any problem enjoying it. I guess it depends on what you consider a "real FPS gamer"...

If my hands weren't so damn big, it'd be a lot easier to play but I still have no problems with controls or anything like that.

In fact, I thought Unit 13 already proved shooters are easily possible on Vita with solid controls and this just reaffirms that for me. If only COD wasn't a fucking joke, the Vita could have actually proven a lot to shooter fans and sold them on it.

I hate to be that person, but the beta has left me extremely disappointed with the multiplayer in the game. It just controls really bad, and when I finally got used to the controls I realized that there is not much strategy involved in the game, and that you don't really need to aim to kill other players. I just ran and press the trigger faster than my enemy and I was able to make a decent kill count in my second match.

I'm a huge Killzone fan but unless the single player makes up for all the shortcomings in the MP I don't see myself getting this game.

That said the game does look gorgeous, and since I'm a big Vita fan at least I'm happy that a lot of people here on GAF are enjoying the beta.
I feel this way about most console games.
But I'm really enjoying kz:m beta. Once it clicks and you get in the zone its a blast.
FOV is teerrrrrrible though.

This controls like shit. Maybe it's the small joystick, but man that's bad. Even with the sensitivity cranked to max it feels horrible. I don't even have to aim most times. Geez. Maybe it'll grow on me over time, but I'm not feeling it at all.

Its just you. Game controls perfectly fine. Right up there with Strangers Wrath Vita as far as analog calibration is concerned.

Played my first batch of matches a little while ago. Took a lot of getting used to playing a first-person shooter on a handheld for the first time, so I was out of my depth, but damn this game is pretty fun! My aiming was haphazard, I kept sprinting when I wanted to crouch and I haven't got a friggin' clue how that hacking mini-game is supposed to work, but it's enjoyable. This is my first Killzone, so I don't really know the names of things, but I was operating a flying robot at one point, and when I landed a kill with it I had a fit of laughter. Stuck the pincers right in the enemies head lol. I have a sick sense of humour.

Graphics look good too. If this is how adept the multiplayer mode is graphically then single player mode must look exemplary. It's a shame I can't try it out.

Too bad it's only one map and game mode. You can level up much faster in DM.
I thought they'll reset the leaderboards after the closed beta. I'm still second haha. :)
Add me Vitabros: bLaiSe_HUN (EU)

completely sold on the beta.... played well, graphics were maybe the first on Vita to impress the hell out of me. Problem is I won't have time to play it.

Is anyone else having problems connecting to a game (EU)? I get to the loading screen for the map, then it goes black, and I get kicked out to the menu with the error message "You were kicked from the game due to a loss of connectivity". Any ideas on how to solve this, or is it just the servers being under a lot of stress?

Yup, I get it all the time. Someone posted a link to the official KZ forums where they give info on port forwarding/triggering. I done it and it didn't seem to help. Just keep trying to connect to games and you get in one eventually.

How do you hack one of the vanguard units? Obviously you've got to choose the little icons around the side which correspond with the central pizza slice pattern, but then what? I can't seem to drag and drop or select more than one at a time, so I'm not sure what I should be doing.

Anyway, other than that I thought it was pretty damn amazing. Controls are great, visuals are great, I love the little tweet when you get a kill, I like being able to buy your own load out, etc. Really impressed overall, and I put in a pre-order earlier. Looking forward to this now :)

I will say that it is a shame that they force you to do swipe gestures to counter attack and interrogate. They could at least give you the option to use just a button instead. I hate this thing from uncharted as it feels unnatural to swipe the screen while using a controller.

No problems in finding a game at all. Out of curiousity since I am using a US playstation account does that mean I am playing with American players even if I am placed in Europe? The connection is veeery smooth to my surprise and it is usually from my side that I disconnect from a game.

Thanks. I've been hammering the servers for a good while now but keep getting different error messages, not a single game. I'm going to sleep now and will try my luck tomorrow morning again.

Tap the thing round the outside then tap the pattern in the middle, then again for the other half.

it looks great but it seems a lot like killzone 3 multi which was just a bunch of random running around in circles. the fov seems very narrow which makes me feel like im walking in a tunnel even out in the open. im going to try messing with the control sensitivity a bit to see if that makes a difference. i was most interested in trying out gyro aiming but it seemed like it would give enough even on max sensitivity, would be nice if I could get something more similar to uncharted behavior then i would maybe enjoy it more. i just dont enjoy pure analog aiming that much in multi

according to the reps on the killzone forums, you have to go through some complicated port forwarding and DMZ and port triggering bullshit just to troubleshoot the issue. nobody on there reporting that working for them.

im getting ready to give up. i'm super frustrated right now. i really wanted to participate in this beta. look for bugs, provide feedback, get a feel for how it all works, etc. but i can't even get into a fucking game.
thanks obama?

This game plays fantastic. I love the inclusion of all the different control and screen options so you can really customise it to how you want it to be. The game is a looker too. Here's a screenshot I grabbed from one of my matches:

I'm definitely sold on the game. However the detracting thing from my experience is how small the teams are. There really needs to be more than 4vs4 multiplayer. Slightly larger maps with 6vs6 or 8vs8 would've been godly.

Ok, is there anything more satisfying than sneaking up to an enemy, firing at their legs with an SMG, grabbing them while they fall down and interrogating them.

Mechanically, this is probably the best interpretation of Killzone multiplayer.

Reading a GAF post that succinctly describes how to interrogate enemies is certainly up there. Cheers!

Played the beta for nearly three hours and I don't know what problems you guys have. This game controls fucking great, I was dishing out headshots left and right, over immense range and at covered enemies.
The default sensitivity is too low though, I set it to around 75%.

Really like the addition of the touch to the melee because it now takes some time to kill someone and you can counter. Hate the instant knife that is so popular in other games.
Felt like an idiot when I found out you can look around with the skyfury vanguard ;)

Tried some weapons and the balancing could be better. The default one is really a good allrounder and my favorite right now.
The STA-14 sucks, no need for a zoomed scope, just give me a reflex sight. Map is too small for that zoom. Unfortunately there is no customization of the weapons.
The M66 is ok, the LS57's clip is too small and ADS without reflex is bad. The STA-7 is a little bit too weak, you really need to put much lead into the enemies.
I don't know how I should feel about shotguns as secondarys.

The UI needs some work. Touch only is a stupid idea. Additionally I don't understand why you have to be set back into the main menu when you fail to join a friend or a game. Just let me retry right away without going through the menu.
Also, why isn't there an option to switch teams? If you want to balance the teams, just deactivate it when a switch would result in an imbalance.

Gameplaywise I would prefer more of an objective based dynamic frontline style (DoD: Source, Enemy Territory, MAG) instead of this. Playercount and mapdesign works though.

Also couldn't join any games until I restarted the game.

I finally played a match today. I had issues getting into a match last night. Over all this is a very good multiplayer game. This is my first killzone experience and I liked it. I guess I got to get mercs and shadow fall.

Can't believe this is on a handheld. It looks so great.

Not sure what I think yet of touch controls (melees, sprint) sometimes I accidentally tap the back and inadvertently start running

Anyone else's hands start to cramp up? I might need to invest in a grip come September...

I was on the fence about purchasing this up until I downloaded the beta.

Day fucking one now.

And if there's some overlap with this game and Shadow Fall then I'm gonna be in heaven because I'm a total sucker for that kind of stuff.

Also I'm sure this has been asked already and I missed it but does anyone know if there will be a character wipe when this beta ends?

I am so awful at this game.

When I see someone near me I go into panic mode, flailing the sights all over the place until I'm gunned down. Lol. Definitely need some practice!

Now i remember why i stopped playing CoD because it turned meinto a nervous wreck. Looks absolutely stunning though, with lots of polish in the presentaion. I'll be all over the single player when it comes out.

STA-14 was my favourite weapon in KZ2. Usually kills people in 2-3 shots. It's like a pseudo-sniper rifle that is mobile. It was the first main weapon I purchased in KZM (the first item i bought was grenade, and then ghost vanguard).

The experience with STA-14 in KZM is really bad. maybe cause the map is kinda small. The default gun is much better.

I'm quite similar to you. Whenever I meet see someone face to face, 80% of the time, I'll die even if i shot first. So I try to just sneak up on people instead. Learn the map and use nades like bitch. Especially those guys hanging out together at the vanguard point. Well placed grenade will take them all out. Also, you could try going for the objectives instead. If all else fails, stick to your team mates. Whether you can provide extra firepower support, or just another body for them to shoot at, you've done your job!

I find that the STA-14 in KZM is like the one in KZ3, it just lacks punch and seems to have horrible accuracy when ADS. In KZ2 it was a beautiful killing machine when crouched and ADS - out sniping snipers! But I feel like the zoom and recoil are too much now and I can't seem to land two consecutive hits. A real shame as it was my go to gun in KZ2. It is also true that the current map does not encourage long range gunplay - you are better off going with an SMG.

First impressions:

OK, this game is a technical marvel. I can't believe how good it looks and how smooth it is on the vita. Kudos to cambridge.

That aside... yup, it's the same patented bullshit infuriating multiplayer. I'm not an FPS noob by any stretch, but getting killed by grenades as you spawn for 5 minutes is not fun. It's like all of the frustration of unreal tournament with none of the finesse.

Yeah biggest problem so far is spawning with an enemy right behind me shooting already.

Maybe it's because of the single map, but I kind of feel like I've played this out.

How many maps does the retail release have? If it's 6, I'm probably going to have to pass on this. It's fun, but only because it's something good to play on the Vita.

I hope they have plans on expanding Warzone.

I see people running around with different valor cards than the default one. I tried to view the collection but its locked. Anyone know why this is?

I guess I'm just used to console FPS, and I'm guessing it's due to Vita's small joystick, but I'm not digging this at all. Making small adjustments in the middle of a firefight is too finicky. It seems to easy to overshoot where you want to go. Tried messing with the sensitivity but the lower I went the more sluggish the controls felt. Having to flick, I think flick might be the wrong word, the right stick a lot is quite annoying, and even with the highest sensitivity, I'm finding myself doing this a lot. Still trying to get used to running when I need to, Not feeling the back touch screen running, but I'm going to blame this one on me.

Spawning is also kinda shit. Spawning with enemies right behind you isn't fun. Not only that but you're fucked, with the sluggish controls you are almost instantly fucked if you spawn in a bad area. There's no way to react. Unless the person is a terrible shot.

On the bright side, the game is beautiful.
