The American vs. Europe view on vacations and time off is flabbergasting

Quite a few Americans seem to be suffering from some kind of work related Stockholm syndrome, I've never heard the word guilt applied to taking holidays before.

Guilty for holidays? Try guilty for leaving early to go to a kids recital or call in sick or attend a parent's funeral. Most American companies are so profit focused they way understaff which obviously leads to stress and work flow problems. Taking a day off and knowing the coworkers you like are struggling to keep up certainly hurts the enjoyment of those days off. However, staffing up so employees can actually have lives and get sick just doesn't happen because then the stock holders and CEOs can't make enough money. The only responsibility of a company is to profit is such a load of crap.

um, its entirely possible to have and do those things with 30 or more days off a year (since its paid time off) and still be well off too.

Spending quality time with the family, or even just enjoying your paid time off outside of work isn't lazy, it enriches your life.

What part of drinking and playing video games all day enriches your life?

I get 20 vacation days a year (+ 10 paid holidays), which is pretty good for the US, but it took me ten years of service earn it. Our sick leave is pretty generous, and draws from a separate pool, but I've been told that doctors appointments have to come out of my vacation time, and I've been told the same for days I stayed home with my sick spouse.

It's less guilt than fear and paranoia. I know personally when I've had to call out sick, I'm imaging my boss thinking I'm faking it-and therefore it looks bad on me in my annual review.

I've said before in the forum, I worked at the Apple Store about 10 years ago-In the middle of the night my wife woke up in pain and we went to the ER-she had to have an emergency appendectomy. As she was being wheeled into the operating room, I called to let work know I couldn't make it in today and explained why. When I returned to work, one of the managers gave me a hard time about it and tried to make me feel guilty. Her exact words were "Next time can you please try to plan this out so you don't have to have an unscheduled absence?"

if i work those 30 days, thats an extra 8000$ in my pocket

which is a rolex, or a down payment on a new ducati, or maybe a new engine for my speedboat

i would rather have those instead of being lazy for 30 days and then complain why video games are 60$. there will be alot of "time off" to rest when im 6 feet under the ground

and while you are slaving away making your 8 grand, I'll be eating breakfast in bed in Negril Jamaica while getting a blowjob from my wife under the covers. After which I'll go enjoy one of the best beaches in the world with a banana mama in one hand and my laziness card in the other.

That just leaves that window open for the other guy to get ahead of you. Dog eat dog, man. You want the shiny prize? Show us how much.

I'm going to bed depressed now.

Which part of working for a living enriches anything other than your wallet?

i worked saturday morning today because the corporate tax deadline is coming soon and had to clear up some client details. OH NOES, NO VACATIONS AND WORKING SATURDAYS?!

-woke up, put on my new 98$ lacoste polo and drove my bmw to office...it enriched me
-the boss ordered breakfast from panera bread, ate that, worked for 4 hours and had a 65$+tip lunch with a co-worker....it enriched me
-came home at 3 and saw my new 170$ raybans were here. so wore those and gave my old pair to my sister, she was happy....it enriched us
-took my mom, dad, sister to a 165$+tip afternoon early dinner....it enriched us
-i will feed my girlfriend a close to a 100$ meal when we go out at 9pm, while my copy of saints row4 is installing....it will enrich us
-tomorrow we are going to long island, 120$ gas+beach parking+food i dont know, theres master card.....it will enrich us
-Monday morning i will go to work in my bmw wearing my new ralph lauren shirt....it will enrich me

then i will work 50-60 hours at my office so i can manage to do that again next friday. because doing those things enriches me, and to support my enriching i have to work

Well lets see I could drink and play video games all weekend and feel like shit Monday or I could work and enrich my wallet 2.5K instead. Not really a tough choice

Are you Christian Bale in American Psycho?

Then when your wife leaves you because you've been laid off for someone who works harder you`ll have those memories to keep you warm in your cardboard box.

This may be shocking to you but there's more to some people's life that is important than the accumulation of material wealth.

Enrichment can be had through experiences which require time to experience ... And time off is just as valuable to some people as the 8 grand you may work four eighty hour weeks for.

You must work a shitty job, maybe look at that part.

I'm assuming you are trolling completely but if not, no I don't have a shitty job but being at work is always going to be more stressful than relaxing at home no matter how you slice it. You realize that we take days off and still get paid for them, right? I don't know why you think we are trading our income for lazy days.

I'm hoping you're a troll. If you're not, I know I'll get a good laugh when we're both 45.

I've worked saturdays, and I've been enriched by the work I do, not the lunch I have. I guess I did find a meaningful job after all.

For added fun, I'm imagining this as your car:

Because you can also sell those days for double income at least I can. I get 4 weeks plus bank time plus bonus time. I just choose to sell those days back for more money.

So yes your trading your income for lazy days, I`m off right now but I have my all my monitors on. One browsing gaf the others Im designing a new arguer system to remove solids from the waste water at work.

that's a nice benefit but one many don't have. For most people vacation days are use it or lose it.

*pats on the head*

Good for you! I hope it doesn't hurt when the company throws you away after you break or a newer model comes out.

That last line conifrmed troll for me, thank you

Also, in communist Norway, vacation is enforced. You can only choose to transfer your days to next year, or use them. And you can only transfer so much. Mandatory vacation.

Bastards! What are they going to do if I come into work anyway? Assign more vacation time! Outrage!

ours is mandatory too at my company ... Work life balance. Not that any of us need to be encouraged to take our days off ... We all have families and loom forward to spending that time with them.

Actually thats why I`ve spent the last 11 years taking night classes I`m terrified of becoming obsolete lol

And honestly I work at the waste water treatment plant, and I`m really building a new auger, you wouldn`t happen to know a good way to remove large rocks and lumber from waste run off with out a pre screen filter?

Disgraceful, I like nothing more than having a cup of tea 24p made with my kettle £24 and sitting on the sofa £999.99p and chilling with the family.

Sentrifuge.

As an American who appreciates the European social system, I wonder has anyone referred to the cost of these great benefits? Vacation pay doesn't just fall out of the sky, it's an employer liability that must be accounted for. There are reasons unemployment in the EU is 4-5% higher than the US and sky high labor costs are a part of that.

Usually someone so enriched wouldn't crave the attention you do.

They tell you at work not to come in if you are sick, but be sure most of the time work will be mad you called off sick.

At my job if you call out sick without a doctors note you get points levied against you. If they send you home early from work, because you're sick you get points. If you have enough points they fire you.

Ahhh this thread.

I get 25 days leave and I work full time, 5 days a week in the UK. Someone in this thread mentioned the minimum legal amount in the UK is 28 days. Going to tell my boss when I go in on Tuesday after the bank holiday. Thanks GAF!

28 days may include bank holidays?

Couldn't imagine not taking my full 20 days each year, i go on a few 4-7 day trips each year (Tallinn, Munich and Berlin so far and 6 days to take) usually around bank holidays so i can save a holiday day, having something to look forward every few months makes work worthwhile. The idea of being pressured into taking as few days as possible is shocking.

I'm getting 22 days plus 10 national holidays (UK). Increases to 25 days after a years service.

My work want me to split my holidays between two 6 month placements though so no super long break for me, but I probably prefer it that way.

15 days sounds depressing.

not much really :(. i dont have anything as enriching as laying back on a couch for 30 days in my life............other than my sandals! probably the only enriching thing in my life are these babes i got during my trip to michigan. Check my new sandals - link

but i would trade all this away even my sandals, just to lay down on my couch for 10 more days

The idea of being pressured into taking as few days as possible is shocking.

Where I work, it's not direct pressure, but we've been through a round of lay-offs and are stretched thin, so nobody has any backup. I can take time off, but it just means more work for someone else who is already overloaded.

I have 190 days off due to me. The last time I took a week off was when I moved house three years ago. I keep getting told to take time off, but then they drop more things into my lap.

I plan to have the house paid off in ten years then I'm downsizing my job - if I'm still alive.

I didn't imagine it would be direct just the fact that you guys can be layed off so easily means you dont want to be seen as the expendable person who always takes sick days or isnt willing to give up their own time for the job. as others have mentioned workers rights are much better for us Euro's and we have to use up our holiday days so our mentality is just completely different, its something we look forward to rather than being something you look at and think about how much you can afford to take.

I don't know. My friend has all that stuff and over 3,000 dollars on both hands and he lives at home with no job.

A lot of americans suffer from not being able to work in some way. I don't know what it is but my SO gets it as well. I get 3 days off a week and she gets 2. Some weeks she will get a third day off that she lines up with mine and she starts going mad on her third day off. I don't understand people who can't just bum around and relax....

I took a week vacation around my birthday just to hang out at home and work out and just did random stuff, after day 3 I wanted to go back to work.

As much as I love games and hobbies, I can say now in my late twenties that I don't know if I could retire. I have been working since I was 15, I would get bored unless I could fund constant trips around the country and world

Fuck work and the guilt trip of taking time off. You don't want me to come in when I'm sick, but get pissed when I call off? You want 24+ hr advance notice? I didn't know I was going to get sick, fucker.

I'm ready to quit my job in the next 2-3 months. I've been making $2-3k/week in the stock market, so why would I continue to deal with the bullshit at work? Some dumbass rich doctor with a God complex can't put in their password correctly and broke their laptop, oh boohoo. What a joke.

The Europeans get it right, here in the U.S. we just work our asses off to make some dumb, rich prick even richer.

It doesn't surprise me. Many places in Canada even enforce breaks too.

Those countries don't have as many people so obviously they want to keep as many workers satisfied as possible.

Take a day off here though? Sure, but don't be surprised if you get replaced by someone else who never takes a day off and works overtime down the road. Competition breeds excellency.
