Microsoft: "It’s up to us to prove that [Xbox One is] worth $100 more [than PS4]"

While it might be a numbers difference, tech wise, I think both sides have a good solid line-up of games. Personally I find the Xbox One line-up a bit more interesting but thats a personal preference. The war will be won on quality games, not on who's number is bigger than someone else.

Yeah, they have some nice launch titles for sure. I have interest in Forza 5 and Dead Rising 3, but that is not enough to make me want to run out and pay $100 more. Lower the price, then we are in business.

And a follow up.

Poor MS though, not knowing what to do and now throwing dirt as a last resort.

I think new tech and launch titles usually means having to burn a good amount of cash on a guess. I hope both consoles do well but sometimes you take a gamble, or you wait it out to see if the time was worth it.

It's a subjective matter.

People buying a Ferrari are idiots because of more affordable and beautiful cars??? NO.

People buying expensive watches like Rolex and designer clothes are idiots because are better and affordable alternatives??? NO.

Same happens to XBONE. People love so much Xbox live and their tag names that they will buy the console no matter what.

I guess the majority of GAF member don't remember all the crap and bullshit you threw at PS3 $600 launch price.

It's up to MS to add more value to the console or a price drop before launch.

I think the combination of a PS4 at $400, and PS+ at $50 is undeniably a better value than the XB1 at $500 and Gold at $60.

Sony is giving you Resogun (which looks awesome) at launch, and that's not the only game. There will be others. Possibly even day one.

As cool as this game looks, it won't be shifting units. The Indie stuff is a cherry on the top of a cake, not the entire cake. Sony and also MS have to launch something a little more interesting.

You would be an idiot to buy a slow Ferrari at an expensive price if you could get a faster Lambo at a much cheaper price.

The article isn't about what shifts units. The article was specifically trying to say their $500 package is more attractive than the other guy's $400 package.

I love my Xbox Live profile with friends etc but I miss out on Xbox One for a while. I'm waiting a couple of years to see how it's doing.

I never bought a $600 PS3, I waited three years for a price drop and decent software. I couldn't stand Sony during that launch, a bloated blu ray player with a piss poor online network all wrapped up in some of the worst arrogance I've seen in this industry.

They deserve credit for turning all that around

So they have to prove it with games that will make people pay that $400 or $500. Indie games won't be doing that. It has to be the AAA titles that give people a reason to buy into the hype.

giving? so I keep it when that 14 days ends?
You don't keep access to Instant Game collection once you stop subscribing.

But yeah, it gets added to your account forever. So if you ever redsubscribe to Plus you'll have that game to play.

and therein lies the problem with consoles once I factor in the high price of games and now the subs fees.
Console gaming isn't for everyone.

I can understand wanting to own stuff too, I still have friends who buy whole TV series box sets instead of using Netflix.

InFamous is launching three months after the official PS4 launch and matches anything in terms of shifting units released during the initial rush.

In theory it is DR3 v. InFamous, heh.

it is rental but it is good that things stay attached for when you want to sub though it must be said.

Yeah, should be interesting. I think they both have a good line-up but I really want to see what E3 2014 is like. :D At least we will have a better idea of what the unit count is like.

For $450 and only $450, you'll be able to play War Thunder, Warframe, Resogun, Driveclub PS+ Edition, DC Online Universe, Blacklight Retribution, and playroom on PS4.

For $560 and only $560, you'll be able to play Killer Instict 1 character.

Do I have this correct? If not let me know, but this is the dollar value proposition as I see it right now.

I dunno, I see a $100 difference as huge; that's nearly two more games you could be buying.

For many this kind of opinion is valid. Personally I think people should be looking at other things, since these consoles are a 6-10 year investment. There will be a LOT of game purchases, movies, music etc utilised through the respective platform. The initial price isn't too big of roadblock in the grand scheme of things, and let's be fair both consoles are expensive off the bat. You should be asking yourself.

- What am I getting in the box?
- Online service, how good is it what am I getting for the cost?
- Games, quality of said games, am I interested in those?
- Controller, obviously. Some like X others like Y. Pure preference.
- Experience, UI, interaction etc

I am thinking (and hoping) that Microsoft still has a lot more to reveal about the XB1 when it comes to services. We still don't know much about the apps, the partnerships with cable providers, etc.

If they go far beyond Sony that will help to make up some of the $100 difference in value for some people. If an XB1 can replace my cable box then I am instantly saving $5 a month.

In response to Albert:

I disagree with many of his points. I don't think the games are better, I don't think the "all-in-one" box is better and I have zero interest in Kinect.

The game line-up is currently comprised of sequels, some very uninteresting new IPs (like Ryse) and multi platform titles so its very easy to not be impressed. Maybe things will change in the future but I'm not very interested. I'm no longer open to Microsoft and the Xbox One after they've tried to screw the consumer with various aspects of their policies. I'm sure they thought they were being forward thinking but they never stopped to consider things from the consumer's point of view and many of their policies benefitted them and publishers but not their consumers. And without consumers your product will not have a successful future.

To me, the Xbox One is packed full of things I don't have a need for and do not want. The TV features are not compelling at all. Aside from the needless switching between a TV show and my multiplayer game like some stimulation addict, my current gaming consoles are connected to a separate TV that I don't use to watch television at all. So those TV features that I don't need but end up paying for (since the tech is in the box regardless) are even more useless for someone like me.

And finally there's Kinect. Kinect has been and will likely continue to be a novelty. Kinect based games are shallow products and exclusive Kinect features in other games so far have been novel ways of calling up a menu or performing a command. Completely unnecessary. And I'm not too keen on using it to log into my Xbox and identify me. I'm very much against using that type of technology. (I'm one of those "I don't want a camera in my home" type of folks.)

IMO, the Xbox One does not provide a very compelling argument as far as I'm concerned. Sure XBL has proven to be the better service but I'm sure Sony will be playing hardball when it comes to the PS4 version of PSN. They already have an excellent subscription service that makes XBL Gold pale in comparison. I don't doubt that they won't come out swinging with PSN this time. We already know Party Chat will make its debut and I expect their messaging system will be improved.

So I'll gladly save those $100. That's enough to buy myself another game. :)

$100 isn't much when you really think about it. Haven't any of you went out? For the extra $100 I get Kinect 2, my preferred left thumb stick placement and I can't play Crimson Dragon on the PS4. I'm amazed they even made this game and I have to support the devs.

You left out Planetside 2

"It’s up to us to prove that it’s worth $100 more. I think it is," senior director of product planning and management at Xbox Albert Penello told GameSpot today at PAX Prime in Seattle, Washington.

Penello said the suite of games and services Microsoft is offering with the Xbox One is stronger than the competition.

"I think we do more. I think our games are better. I think as people start to experience Kinect and see what it can do using voice, I think that’s better," he added. "I think the ability to have an all-in-one system where you can plug in the TV, that’s better. I think we’ll have a better online service."

"I just believe that we’re going to have a better system."

Ultimately, consumers want to buy the "best thing," Penello said. The Xbox One's stance as the most premium console this holiday season won't hold it back, he argued.

"$100, when you’re talking $400 vs. $500 [shrugs shoulders]. I don’t believe it’s going to be the deal-killer," he said

I agree with everything Albert says here. The next 2 months are going to be a critical time for MS to show in commercials and live demonstration what the XBone does that differentiate itself from being "just another new game playing machine".

I've watched the unboxing of the XBone that Major Nelson did and saw everything thats in the box and wonder how the hell its not more than $499 for everything thats included. People buy iPads for $499 like its nothing and all that comes with it a data cable and cheap headphones. I have yet to see on macrumors a 10 or 20 page thread complaining about its price. Console wars are different and I get that.

The truth of the matter is the investment is not in the initial cost whether that be $400 or $500, but potential hundreds or thousands of dollars over the course of a consoles life span. Most people can't afford to buy (and support) both so folks feel the need to root for one and bash the other to validate their console purchase of choice. Good times though. It only happens once or twice a decade.

The launch titles for both systems wont look so different that casuals will notice a difference between the two. Therefore they need to be told which system is more powerful. There is always misinformation in the market and even a lack of information. I had a friend who couldn't tell the difference between Killzone Shadowfall and the current Call of Duty while looking ata video on my phone. These kind of people exist in the market.

It will be up to Sony, more so than Microsoft, to prove its value to gamers in North America.Remember, Microsoft had the lead in NA for quite awhile. This means Sony will actually be the one who has to work hardest. They have alot of friends lists they need to break up and peer pressure is a powerful thing. Since Sony's entire strategy has been about countering what it anticipates Microsoft to do at this point, I suspect their ads will focus on its power/price point advantage. Just like DRM at E3, Sony would be stupid not to over emphasize its trump card.

I don't call games I don't want to play value for either console.

That's actually the best attitude they could have. When they initially revealed the X1 they were utterly convinced that IT was all the proof they needed to convince us of its value and that policies they had adopted surrounding it were of "tier 3" importance. They found out just how wrong they were on that account.

If the attitude is now more along the lines of "ok, ok... we think we've got a great thing here, but we understand that we need to prove to everyone that our machine is worth the asking price-- and that we sorely need to prove it to gamers who by and large give zero fucks about app-snapping and our media partnerships", that this could end up being a positive thing for those that want to support MS but who have so far been unconvinced.

It's not really a rental though, since you have the games on your account forever. It's more like a subscription service, such as Netflix.

fair enough.

to me if I own something then I have access to it at all times. if I only have that when' i'm paying a sub it's a rental. just semantics I guess but having it on an account is meaningless if I'm not paying so I don't count that as ownership (especially as there's nothing stopping them changing that in future and taking things off the service).

having said that, we own very little of this stuff anyway, just a license to play it,

Most of the tent-pole F2P on PS4 games have been on PC for a while, so I have done those to death. Driveclub looks fun, even though I am not bothered with driving games.

I guess it depends what people view as a value. I am buying a console for games now and beyond, not just launch titles. I guess everyone takes a gamble and see if it pays off. :D

I don't call games I don't want to play value for either console.

Ok then let's do it another way.

For $400 and $400 only, you can have access to the all the media functionality of the all in one media solution of PS4 as well as having access to 4 games.

For $500 and only $500, you have a box with no playable games and no media functionality on XBO. Where is the $500 "all in one entertainment system"?

For $500 plus tax, you have a box that without spending more money can't do a damned thing.

"$100, when you’re talking $400 vs. $500 [shrugs shoulders]. I don’t believe it’s going to be the deal-killer," he said.

And what if we are talking about $650 vs $550, because that is what it costs here?

Fuck off. (and yes, I know you post here).

For someone that does not have cable in his bedroom and usually has ONE game console hooked up to his TV, these "all-in-one" features don't mean jack shit.

If Microsoft repeats this gens performance when it comes to exclusives then you will see rapidly diminishing returns when it comes to long term support. Outside of Forza and arguably Gears their core franchises suffered or were eliminated. Viva Pinata was a great game and they dropped it like a stone. I am not here to hate on MS or their value proposition but as an Xbox customer from the original box, I don't feel like they have delivered on the value I have paid out for.

fair enough.

I know I don't own any of the PS+ Instant Collection games I have attached to my account, but then I'm only paying $60 a year to have access to play 60+ games a year. It's incredible value to be able to play through that many games in a year for the price; I've never had rentals so cheap and for so long.

I'm also aware that I don't own any of Netflix's movies, but having access to watching all those movies is worth the price of entry to me, much in the same way it is with PS+.

What I do own though, are all the PSN games I've bought which PS+ has given me a discount on; which has paid for the cost of the service already.
