Adam Sessler"Titan Fall one of the Most Enjoyable things I've played at a Convention"

Maybe, but right now MS are in a bad position, with a inferior but $100 more expensive hardware. They need to take risks, they need ASAP a differential selling point (other than Kinect). Titanfall looks like it, the Halo 3 of this gen, a game able to sell a lot of SKUs.

Halo 5 will be the Halo 3 of this gen :P

Titanfall looks like it, the Halo 3 of this gen, a game able to sell a lot of SKUs.

Two very stark differences with Halo 3.

1. Halo 3 continued off a highly successful and well-loved franchise. A franchise that had 7 years worth of brand-building and legacy, built on a detailed universe, lore, beloved main character with a selling point in both single player and multiplayer.

2. Halo 3 was a true exclusive. You literally had to buy an Xbox 360 to play Halo 3, no alternatives.

Titanfall, for all its hype, is a new IP, with approximately one year's worth of marketing. Multiplayer only, which will slightly reduce its audience. Furthermore, it's going to be released relatively early in the life-cycle of next-gen. Not to mention it's also available on the 360 and PC.

The combination of XB1's price-tag, the timing of the game's release, mixed with the fact that the game would also be on 360 greatly dilutes the system selling potential of Titanfall.

Attention to what?

As someone said being able to play this is a lot different to just watching bullshot gameplay and CG videos of things And that's where a lot of it's good word has come from people actually playing it. Getting it and enjoying it.

That wasn't directed at you, but i'm amused at your need to defend this games honor at every turn.

The game looks pretty great but the circlejerk the press is engaged in over it is getting a bit much.

It's a first person shooter with jetpacks and mechs. It's not exactly the end-all of video games.

He said his problem with multiplayer FPSes is there's always one guy who knows how to play better than you, understands the map better, etc., and the reason this one's more fun is that there's always "something to be discovered".

The reason he's discovering new things and not getting his ass kicked is because no one knows what they're doing yet. It's not hard to predict that soon after release there will be plenty of players better than you, just like every multiplayer FPS and every other game.

I think the combo of Titanfall, Halo, Destiny for Christmas next year is going to give Microsoft a big boost. But they need a pricecut too this time next year.

Ahh, the port begging... That's when you know you have a great exclusive!

So a game that's fun to play deserves no media circle jerk? The game draws interest, so they're going to talk about it. I'm glad they're hyping a game that is actually fun to play based on gameplay impressions of it.

Game looks like a modern realistic unreal tournament with less mechs and vehicles, but the graphics style makes it look like a CoD game. If that makes sense.

You say that like Sesslers['s opinion on MS specific matters has been taken without a grain of salt..Where have you been? He clearly has his biases, for better or worst, but at the very least he's the better of his contemporaries.
Every single person has a bias or better yet discriminates between games they prefer or don't. It's just the nature of things. I'm just curious if certain people ever consider the possibility that the positive reaction from people who have "seen" or played titanfall is because its something they enjoy rather than to whom their allegiance is with. Maybe it's just a damn good game.

Yes, but I think you're oversimplifying the concept by undermining it's features. While it's no "end-all" video games it is a "start-all" for what next-gen gameplay is supposed to introduce that couldn't be done previously.

Didn't watch the video, but I played on Sessler's team during the media hour yesterday and we kicked ass and managed to beat the other team. Was a ton of fun!

How well did the Mass Effect games sell on the PS3?

I'm curious if people (PS4 owners) will still be interested in Titanfall a year later.

With the EA relationship with MS and the current exclusivity... would not be surprised if MS does not buy the exclusivity for a long long time on this until Xbone is known as the Titanbro machine

In an Xbox 360 title?

It looks great, but it doesn't strike me as a game which really shows off hardware.

If you don't mind me asking, how did you find the teamplay dynamic? Did it feel like a larger squad of players + the AI?

It is surely much easier to buy exclusivity at this stage of the generation. I fully expect the EA special relationship to fade.

So glad this game is running on the source engine so i don't have to upgrade my video card for awhile.

They changed the renderer and pipeline so you still might have to upgrade. We'll see when the game comes out. Doesn't look like it'll be killing any video cards but I imagine it's going to be more demanding than Portal 2 or any other Source engine game.

It's a gutted source engine used at its base. The renderer is brand new along with many other things in the engine. The source engine was heavily single threaded before they gutted the whole thing. They said the game would be running in the single digit fps if they didn't gut it and then turn it into a modern dx11, heavily multi threaded engine

Will get for PC for sure. Funny how I just drew the connection to Attack on Titan and got way more hype about it.

Is this gonna be like most shooters where you basically have to be a high-school or college kid or unemployed to be able to spend enough time with the game to actually be competitive and get any enjoyment out of it?

The problem is that people are completely skewing the actual issue -- I don't think there's a lot of intentional bribing and such going on, like "Hey, here's some money, write a good review.". It's probably more like "journalists" know developers or representatives from the publisher or developer of the game they are writing about, and feel more inclined towards talking positively about it.

However, I don't think the representatives or developers have any special training in deception and persuasion, so if the publishers or developers intentionally order their employees to "get to know them", the journalists would probably find out about that really quickly through their behaviour. So, it's unlikely that they are "faking" their relationship just to increase the odds of a journalist writing positively about their game.

I think that, since they hang out in the same circles very often, they are probably just friends, and as such, the journalist friend might feel more inclined towards writing positively about their "friends" game.

Like, the representative of the publisher or developer would most likely have a positive bias for a game his or her company makes, and unintentionally try to push that bias onto her or his friend. The journalist friend of the representative friend would have some positive bias for his or her friend regardless.

It seems like, in most other circles, the journalists/reviewers are more like their own team -- as in, they hang with each other, or, to exaggerate it, in an "us (critics.) vs. them (movie makers.)" situation. The games industry blurs the lines.

Very very much. People get hired by games PR if they have a wide circle of contacts and are very well liked. Successful candidates are the ones who have an immediately likeable personality and great set of contacts. They are hired specifically for the influence they can provide, and part of that is a natural and unforced charisma. And the pool of talent that the companies hire from are game journo writers, editors, etc. So yeah, we aren't exactly talking about the New York Times journalistic ethics here.

Does that mean everyone is getting paid, of course not. But there are lots of valid reasons not to trust game journos or a bunch of people willing to line up for hours to play five minutes of Titanfall.

And personally, if I was an aging games journo like Sessler, I'd be passing out CVs to PR departments, you know cuz better pay, medical benefits, pension plans etc.

The cycle of game hype-dissappointment will continue no matter what.

Knowing the maps and mobility seem to be the main things here. How they balance the Soldier and Titan combat is to be seen but you trade mobility for crazy firepower but on a timer.

If you don't spend enough time to learn the maps and the common traveled routes, you will never be good at it.

The controls are ready to grasp though. It's just getting familiar with the environment that takes longer

We don't know much of the 360 version but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be of this scale.
Besides, there are other things besides "graphics" that can push hardware. Frame-rate, animation blending, scale-of-area, AI etc all contribute in pushing what is needed in the hardware.

This is why it's so easy to see games like KZ: Shadowfall or Infamous:SS because "visually" it's the first thing we inspect when showcasing hardware. But look behind the scenes and you'll notice the gameplay barely has any improvement or refinement compared to it's last-gen predecessors.

If you don't mind me asking, how did you find the teamplay dynamic? Did it feel like a larger squad of players + the AI?

Hmm. Well the AI was actually helpful in some regard, though I thought it didn't help us press the other team when we were pushing. (If that makes sense.) Not perfect, but what AI is, especially in a game such as this?

What does the first thing have to do with the second?

I don't understand this statement. Any good competitive game requires a ton of time and effort to get good at or be competitive.

And most shooters have adequate match making where you will be paired up with other newbies and just play for fun while getting some random kills. You can get loads of fun out of a COD or Halo game playing casually online.

Didn't watch the video, but I played on Sessler's team during the media hour yesterday and we kicked ass and managed to beat the other team. Was a ton of fun!

nice! Did you find it easy to pick up and play or did it take awhile to get used to the controls?

Did you do the Epilogue thing? (Chasing down the loosing team etc) What was that like? Was it a good idea ot add or wasting a bit of time at the end?

So I guess it's similar to Dota/LoL where the AI soldiers provide just enough pressure to push forward but not to the extent that they're doing everything. Sounds perfect. Thanks for the info.

Many games do much better at matching people up against those of similar skill levels or just being easier to get into. I can hop into FIFA after not playing it for a year and it's no big deal; every match is competitive. Not saying Titanfall will be bad in this respect, just an issue I've had with shooters generally.

Maybe, but in the end, you live and die by those biases, and as it stands, I trust NintendoGal's enthusiasm more than i trust Sesslers.

Embarrassingly enough, I died as we were going into this bit because I wasn't familiar with what was going on so I simply kept rushing in to attack. So I got to view my teammates going after them after a fashion. Wasn't sure how to switch views either, so I didn't see much. I know we didn't manage to stop them though.

nice! Did you find it easy to pick up and play or did it take awhile to get used to the controls?

Very easy (at least for me). If you've played CoD or any "modern" FPS game, this should be fairly easy for you. Reload/switch weapons was exactly the same config as default CoD that I remember. Even the melee was press thumb-stick in.

So I guess it's similar to Dota/LoL where the AI soldiers provide just enough pressure to push forward but not to the extent that they're doing everything. Sounds perfect. Thanks for the info.

Yes, that's the best way to put it from what little I've seen of those types of games.

Ahh a shame. It looks like a cool idea to finish off a round. Thanks for the answers. :D

Well I have had no problem with most shooters this gen like COD or Halo. The Halo MM is great, I can hop into Halo now and still have fun.

Compared to MOBAs I took a week off and when I came back I was rusty as hell and started feeding unintentionally. Or fighters where it was drop city central (minus Dive Kick, that game I can probably hop in after 5 years and still be decent).

No problem, hope I was helpful.

As a note: I've somewhat been burning out of playing CoD as well as BF3, but this game has me excited to go back to FPS again after the break I've been taking lately.

Indeed! Nice to get some gameplay impressions from members of GAF.
