New Zelda Wind Waker HD videos

Even regarding that it's still more exaggerated, especially in the sky.

Ultimately it's a fairly moot point to me, as WW clearly isn't striving for realism. So having a whimsical cartoony look have a defense as realistic tropical lighting is weird. I'm sure playing the game it'll eventually grow on me, but I would have liked some sort of Halo CE-esque switching ability.

Exactly, it cant be compared 100% to real life.

Ok, this looks seriously incredible.

I feel really bad for the people that dislike the new look, but as far as im concerned this is a million things better. Can't wait for the 20th.

Edit: I think the crispness of the colors is noticeably more appealing. I also love the distinct change of shade between the ocean and the sky, and how natural the lighting blends and inclusion of shadows. Looks more alive and vibrant than ever.

I'm in the Caribbean right now, and as much as I like how the game looks, the bloom or whatever you want to call it is exaggerated. It does however succeed in giving the game the proper atmosphere and feel.

:lol Come on by, bring over your Wii U so I can see what the fuss is all about.
Sounds good! I'll keep your offer in mind as I plot a cross-country tour visiting my fellow GAF members. (Half-serious, but man that would be fun)

Game looks fantastic, but I can understand the complaints about the bloom... It is a little overdone in parts but I think Nintendo were really trying to nail the "beach sunlight" look for this. They succeed in some areas and fail in others, hopefully like some other posters mentioned already there is a slider option for the bloom.

I think it looks great. The lighting looks really dynamic. At certain points it's tame and at other points it looks like you could fry an egg on links head. Love it.

Well, I wish you would have taken a picture so I could see what your eyes saw. I've never once in my entire life, which admittedly is only a paltry 28 years old, seen anything that even remotely resembles the bloom in this video. It looks friggin' weird at times.

That said, let's just assume for a second you are right. Let's assume in the Dominican Republic there is occasion when the beach turns into an irradiated wasteland of light.

My query would be: So? It's Zelda: Wind Waker. It has one of the most distinctively stylistic art directions in all of gaming. Was the original idea to emulate REAL LIFE, or to provide an amazing palette of colors and cel-shaded expression which is at its best when it is on a clear canvas?

wait are you saying it looks like real life or not? lol

this seems like you want to be on both sides of the argument haha

WW isnt emulating real life due to artistic style. However, the setting is that of a tropical island in nature and the GCN version it never gave me that sense of a hot bright tropical day. This does and it brings me back to when I used to live there. I used to go a lot to Boca Chica beach, look up it up if you like. On a good sunny summer day its bright and hot and thats the feeling I get when I look at these Wii U screen shots and videos.

This. It is obviously exaggerated, but it goes well with the proposal. It will probably be nice to, after you spent an hour or so crawling inside a dark dungeon, come out and see the sun shinning outside in contrast.

That part was the "woah" moment for me in the comparison.

Them clouds.

Bloom >>>> That shit DOF filter the original has.

END OF STORY.

Can agree with this.

only complaint i have about the lighting is how stuff looks kinda weird indoors. they look more solid or something. not sure how to describe it, but it looks a little cheap.

This is not an argument but I'm glad you have stated your position for the record. I have inscribed it on the universal book of records for safe keeping.

It wasn't an argument. It was a narrative. A FACTUAL ONE.

Oh man, that DOF filter was weird. Always aggravated me on Windfall.

...it -is- gone in the HD version, right?

look at Xaz's screenshots.

yes... it is gone.

Yes. It is gone. Praise the sun.

They're actually all about making the Zelda games have a sense of realism and to suck you in and feel like you're really there. Miyamoto focused on it at one of his GDC speeches. They just don't try to make it realistic.

For some odd reason the bloom in Outset Island is particularly...much, but then in some similarly sunny places like Windfall it's fine for the most part.

Also odd is that Link looks like a clay model in a few shots (most notably in darker areas/scene), but then looks like his old model but better in others. It might be perspective though.

I don't know why you thought my comment was saying otherwise, but i wasn't mocking his opinion, merely implying through a lame joke that it does not further the discussion we're having, since he quoted me.

I know all oceans are technically tons of water over what are effectively fucking deep canyons, but seeing that shot of the KoRL in front of the Tower of the Gods gives me vertigo, maybe because knowing what's below makes me realize how high up Link really is.

I'm curious what a Twilight princess remaster would look like on the Wii U. There's a lot of holes and bugs in that game that would benefit from a remaster, I kinda want one now. Also Roalgoal + Gyroscope. ;P Regardless though this looks great.

I literally gasped at that part. The jump in scale is astounding -- you can see two additional archways in their entirety. It's a sweeping view, and you feel like you're there.

16:9 really helps this game a lot. Is this game native 1080p or 720p?

Looks very crisp eitherway.

I don't mind it, granted I think WW was probably the one Zelda game that didn't need an HD remake, but it looks really good.

The discussion about whether or not Wind Waker is trying to look like a realistic depiction of a sunny day, or a stylized one? Neither looks realistic. One looks sunnier and doesn't have a hideous DOF filter all over everything more than ten feet away. I go with that one.

Realism be damned. Sunny and inviting be praised. You said it looks best on a clear canvas, and the HD canvas without all the crap DOF is MUCH MUCH clearer. That is not debatable, or opinion.

I love the bloom on Outset in particular. I can see how the sky might seem garish if you just look at the sky, but man... Taken as a whole, it makes the island feel so warm and, well, sunny. :)

Well there are multiple tendrils to the discussion, part of it being a discussion of how accurate the bloom is to real life (seems we agree on there), another part of it being whether this 'stylized' bloom fits in with the original game's wickedly original art style.

This third discussion started by you is about the original game having a weird vaseline DOF filter (true) and thinking the bloom is superior. I am not sure why the trade off would be one ugly thing for another ugly thing, but I prefer the original because it allows the full range of the primary colors to come through and doesn't have that washed out look.

Once this HD remaster goes indoors or the game is at night, of course, all meaningful comparisons very well end: this HD Remaster obviously massacres the original from that point on.
