Yusuf Mehdi on Xbox One: 'We have a better value proposition than our competitors'

“Competitively speaking, I feel like we have a much better and more complete value proposition,” he said. “We do things that aren’t found on other platforms. The Kinect is a huge piece of differentiation, and the fact that we do entertainment and gaming.” Mehdi also said that the Xbox has a “better lineup of games,” which sounded very similar to the recent Xbox One promo trailer.

He also cited the fact that the Xbox One won more awards at this year’s E3 video game conference than Sony and Nintendo combined.
“We wanted something to really differentiate that lets you play games as if you’re playing movies and we wanted to break the barrier of being able to voice control your television,” Mehdi explained. “So to do that, we added a lot of capability. For $499, we think the value we provide for that is a very good deal. We feel that we’ve done the right balance. And if you look either the pre-orders that we’ve been sold out for weeks, or do price-adjusted inflation on the 360, it’s actually pretty comparable.”
“We’re trying to provide a central device in the living room that for the first time can unify all forms of entertainment in one simple effort,” he said. “We don’t just want to unify it, but then allow literally with your voice to control your television. We think TV’s will truly become smart TV’s where you can browse and do Skype communication and interactive television. Xbox One is key to opening up that world of next-generation entertainment.”

To each their own. We will see once each console launches and we actually start next generation in full swing.

I'm getting both.

Funny since I've had a really hard time seeing the value. That's why I didn't preorder one.

Their habit of forgetting that gamers still want games after the first few years may have also played a part in that.

Entertainment and Gaming is why I don't want an XB1.

Gaming and Entertainment is why I want a PS4.

Spot the difference Microsoft.

eh..need to spike out the value a bit more than "Games and Entertainment* (Gold Required). If you don't have Xbox Live Gold the system is really limited with a $100 more base price.

I have yet to see them demonstrate or even properly explain their claim of having greater value than the competitors.

What a load of bullshit. It's a
weaker console
that costs more
that is almost certain to have inferior exclusives.

Kinect is trash and so are the NFL deals.

I'm ashamed to say but the more 180s that they perform, the more I want the Xbone. I am not a fan of motion controlled gaming but Kinect 2 just fascinates me as to the potential. Ugh.

By E3 awards they had better not be referring to Titanfall because that shit is also for PC and might even come to PS4 at some point.

In the last Pach attack, pachter guessed that Microsoft might go down this road to justify the price differential. He also noted that the difference is mainly due to hardware and that consumers will ultimately decide whether they perceive any value there.

MS is sounding more and more like Sony circa 2006 when they talk about 'value'. Sony spent the first half of the generation talking about the PS3's 'value'.

I see MS keeps overdelivering value with the Xbox One.
It's actually starting to get irritating how they keep mentioning value in many interviews, they know full and well that a Kinect-less SKU would be more competitive, it'll probably come down the line.

I suppose that depends on what you're looking for. If you're not one for the TV integration, Kinect, or NFL/ESPN/sports (like me), then I'd say not really.

Plus there's still virtually everything being behind the Golden Gates, which is definitely something to consider when talking about value propositions. Paying $60 a year even to use the simplest of things like Youtube or Internet Explorer, of all things, isn't helping.

Of course he's gonna say this. He works for Microsoft. lol.

This is true as well, of course.

"We do things that aren't found on other platforms".

Really? 'Cause I can already do most of that shit with my TV, receiver, and Blu-ray player, which all runs through one remote already. Toss in the Playstation and I can play games, too.

Which leaves Kinect. That's not "things". That's "a thing". That's a thing that a lot of people don't want. Not exactly the top selling point.

But of course anyone at MS would say things like this. They're the only company I know of that actually believes the bullshit it spews in its advertisements. Think about their recent history. After the Xbone announcement, they were completely baffled by the feedback. It all made perfect sense to them, and was clearly the greatest invention since the wheel, they simply didn't understand why people had bad things to say about it.

A different value proposition, sure. A better value proposition? No. If it was $400, I would see the whole thing totally differently. As it stands, you're paying $100 more, and you're not getting an extra $100 in value. (I'm not convinced you're getting *any* extra value for the extra money as it stands.)

To each their own of course, but I'll look forward to considering an Xbox when it's price comes into line with its competitor.

pretty sure PS4 can provide as much non-gaming entertainment as you would want.

Kinect is redundant and gimmicky at best and so is voice command.I don't want to talk to my console everytime I operate it.Using a controller and pressing buttons is easy and convenient as it is.

How many awards does the Xbox One have without Titanfall?

This. It's funny to see them brag about this when all those awards came from one game that they really had nothing to do with creatively other than pay a lot of money to make sure it doesn't show up elsewhere.

I hate to sound mean, but, guys like Yusef are a big reason why MS just doesn't sit well with me.

They need a @yosp. Someone who comes off as genuine, even if you're totally aware that the decisions they make, and the things they say, are all about getting your money.

I just feel like the mouthpieces for MS (Yusef, Spencer, Harrison) all come off as just a bunch of suits. Especially when saying stuff like this. Maybe he's right, but, I just don't believe him.

Entertainment and Gaming is why I don't want an XB1.

Gaming and Entertainment is why I want a PS4.

Spot the difference Microsoft.

they're practically the same dude. I wonder how things might have played out differently if MS had changed the order of their 2 conferences.

When you have to argue about your value proposition, you know you're in trouble. Just look at Reggie. He can't shut up about all that great value.
