New Zelda Wind Waker HD videos

The biggest upgrade to the HD version is the fact that the backgrounds are now lit and cast shadows. In the original, only the objects and characters had any real lighting.

This thread needs more Dolphin shots. I can't comprehend how people can compliment the bloom. Just look at what could have been.

In your example comparison shots, I definitely prefer the top photo of the Wii U version. It's brighter an nicer to me. So better start comprehending :p

This, of course, just goes back to saying that that it's all subjective in the first place.

One thing I personally don't understand is those of you saying that this isn't what it was intended to look like. Who is to say that this isn't what they had more in mind when making the game in the first place but couldn't get it to look like this because of the GameCube's graphical capabilities? And if you go by the official art, well... they actually changed it for this new version.

Does that make sense? I don't see any statements from Nintendo saying "the GameCube version is REALLY what it's SUPPOSED to look like."

Most dolphin shots were ugly. The parts with actual textures (islands) stick out like a sore thumb compared to the cel shading.

The new look is great. It actually feels like an ocean now, instead of ,,Microsoft Paint bucket: blue''. Can't believe I'm almost hyped for this, they might have actually turned WW into a somewhat good game.

I think that by now we can all agree that Nintendo needs to release a demo of WW. I need to see the game with my own eyes and in my own TV.

some caps to go along with this:

This is a Zelda game I hold close to my heart. I remember buying it and playing it with my niece and nephew (they alway wanted me to beat there games for them now they don't want me to even look at there games lol). When I first played it I got this high seas type of adventurous atmospheric feel, and look from the presentation. After seeing WWHD in contrast to the original GC version, the GC version looked kind of dreary, and the pic comparisons of the dolphin WW looks drail flat compared to WWHD. The bloom is fine and looks to fit the situation IMO. I just hope this remake gives me that feel it did when I first played this game.

The only thing I liked about this game was the art style and now they ruined that...

On the other hand, the faster sail will make it much more tolerable to play.

Come on now. It's not perfect - but the beautiful atmosphere, art style, and setting overshadow the weak points.

I don't know how anyone can dislike the new look. It's simply gorgeous. Makes the original look almost ugly.

Every single Zelda since WW vanilla has been scrutinized for its graphics. Its just how the internet works.

The comparison really proved how much better this update makes the game look.

As far as the bloom, Im with Nintendo and really agree with the artistic choice here. It works in this game, bc its an environment that is supposed to be very bright and sunny.

I don't know why the bundle is becoming a temptation for me considering I have played this game several times...once on Dolphin.

It's the only game I'm super excited to play on Wii U...still seems to overriding my logic to resist paying $300 for a game I already own.

Want is strong. Will resist for a while longer until price drops again.

Did they up the polygon count for the first person bits? Link's arm looked awful in the original game from what I remember, but it seems to look fine now.

The negativity that has always surrounded this beautifully crafted game bothers me. It has the ability to make you feel young and perk your inner explorer...a big ocean full of islands just waiting to be explored. Sometimes you'll find an island that requires more preparation on your part to advance, it's almost a metroidvania. If you haven't ever played this game based alone on its asthetics you're doing yourself a huge disservice...it's one of my favorites. (yes my avatar is quote worthy I understand)

Some more caps:

oh wait, how did those last ones get in there? I guess I got confused by all the bloom that everyone hates so much. whoops!

Great shots of the game! Can't wait to eventually get my hands on a copy.

There seems to be a double standard in regards to Nintendo and the creators of Rime using bloom in their games, thanks for pointing that out.

I dig those captures above. I didn't like the bloom in some of the older shots, but those look fucking delicious.

It's supposed to look like a Saturday morning cartoon.

I really think it wasn't, at least the bloom part, the original tried to had some sort of fog like effect but I guess the hardware wasn't up for that. I don't think dolphin is comparable, watch the original, it's specially visible when seeing islands from distance.

I think is not inaccurate to call tWW HD the "director's cut" version of the game.

One thing I think is weird is when they MIX the old and new lighting. You'll see link with a hard cartoon shadow on him while ALSO being lit by the new lighting model. I think when he's lit only by the new light, he looks amazing. Somehow it makes him look way more high-poly than he is, just an amazing rounding and gradation effect. But then sometimes he still has the hard-lined black shadow on him. It's a weird mix, both at once, and certainly one that makes no sense in any kind of reality. I'd have rathered if they just went All In with the new light, and cut out the hard black entirely. It definitely looks more like a claymation/CG look with the new light, but it's at its most jarring when the toon shadows are still around.

It's reliant on the light source. The more powerful it is, the more distinguishable the harder shadows are and the less they blend with colors. Even though it's not completely cell-shaded anymore it's still maintaining a good deal of it's stylized edge.

Actually, looking at some Dolphin shots I'm kind of realizing that Link's model isn't nearly as hard-shaded as I thought it was. There's some notable blur on the shadows of some models in certain environments. Killer7 was more cell-shaded than Wind Waker.

Author's intent is irrelevant. The Star Wars trilogy is SUPPOSED to look like the special editions, but they look like fucking horse shit and I refuse to watch them.

The Gamecube version looks better. Bottom line. They're ruining it with bloom, the same way they ruined Star Wars with CGI monsters in a movie filmed in the 70s.

As someone who never played the original (so I'm comparing screenshots), I can only say that the HD version looks much much better.

People will change their mind seeing the game in motion in front of them. It's just gorgeous. It was already the case but HD brings it to another level.

imo the bloom effect is not that disturbing. Also why Rime's bloom doesn't disturb anyone when Zelda's bloom makes the game looks like shit -_-

The boss in the tower of the gods is going to look so goddamn cool in this. I remember a few boss rooms standing out lighting wise.

Wow, 2 gens apart and almost no visual difference!

To be fair, you really need to see the Rime trailer in motion. My goofing around with these pics was entirely about the bloom whining.

In actual video, you can see the generational jumps between them more clearly.

You're completely right about Star Wars. You're mostly wrong about Wind Waker :D

I prepared a mud pit. Meet me outside :P

Like someone else said, it's probably more about the vibrancy of the colors and people don't realize that, instead pointing their finger at bloom. Rime has a more muted, realistic color palette while WWHD is all about bright colors melting your face off.

Also, people forgets that we are comparing to an emulator that runs in really powerful PCs. The 10 years evolution is unfair if we use these sources, we need to compare with the original one running in a component cable!
