New Zelda Wind Waker HD videos

I'm pretty torn on this. There's times where the bloom is appropriate like when you're sailing and the suns beating down on you, I just wish they'd tone it down a little on some of the islands, it just washes everything out. =/

fuckin' Amir0x lol

I'm replaying Skyward Sword right now and I saw those pumpkins on Pumpkin Landing and it made me think of that.
I managed to stop Beedle's airship before getting the slingshot by spearing a pumpkin with my sword and chucking it at the bell.

This is what I'm talking about, they really went nuts with the glows, no taste what so ever.

I don't know man, I think the Forbidden Woods looks great tbh. It comes off as a proper look to it, like how they originally wanted it to be.

I could see maybe the Gohma shot's glows being a bit unnecessary but the FW looks really stunning. It was always glowy in there (but a softer glow) and I think the stronger glows give a stronger atmosphere of being in an environment like FW.

The new footage looks amazing. It shows the the vast difference in the usage of bloom between in- and outdors. Aonuma mentioned the HD Remake should give the players a strong feeling of a tropical overworld with really strong sunlight. The footage shows just that.

Yeah. It works well in a game like this since you spend a long time inside dark dungeons so when you go outside with all that bloom up in yo face, you're really going to notice the contrast between the two when you're eyes are trying to adjust, as you would in reality after being in the dark for so long.

It reminds me of a keynote video I watched by Aonuma at gdc 2004 on wind waker where he talked about how with zelda games, particularly with wind waker, they'd have this design philosophy called "zelda reality" that everything they created in the world, to the smallest details that the player might notice subconsciously, would add the the believe-ability and sense of reality in the game world. All of these minute details combined, like the expressive facial animations in wind waker, or sense of tropical heat when exiting dungeons, would help to immerse the player.

Pretty interesting keynote overall I would recommend zelda fans watch if they're interested in how these games are designed, well how they were 10 years ago then anyway, some things have probably changed since then.

I should probably get my ears checked
and learn about music
because I can barely tell the difference, but I can appreciate that they made the effort for those who can. If someone hadn't told me they'd been updated though I don't think I'd have noticed.

That's the thing, you're not supposed to! They redid the OoT music and tweaked it so it still sounded like the original so you DON'T notice it's different but just feel it's always sounded like this.

They need to turn the bloom down from 200% to 50%.

Nintendo learning lessons from 2004.

It'll be the 4th time I play WW to completion, but I'm still very excited. Starting on Hero mode obviously. I actually really like the look of this version, like someone here said: it looks tropical.

He said the original. Not the game running on Dolphin ;)

Fair point. But still.

That bloom/over saturation takes away from the style of the original.

Fair point. But still.

This has been discussed to death already.

. Hero mode and hd are the only changes?

Not even close.

Differences from Original Version

Visuals
The most obvious change comes from the HD upgrade in the visual departments. The game runs at a native 1080p resolution while maintaining the original games 30 frames per second. Wind Waker HD also enhances the originals toon-shaded art style with some modern shader technology that introduce bloom lighting, soft real-time shadows and a generally more vibrant feel to it. The black and white section in of the original game is now presented in sepia tone. Textures were upgraded for the higher resolutions as well.

Audio
All the sounds and music has been reworked with higher quality samples and a much crisper sound while still keeping the feel of the original game intact.

User Interface
Naturally, the game now makes use of two screens. The GamePad screen gets used for instant access to Link's inventory which the player can manipulate via touch-controlled drag-and-drop. During sea travel, the screen displays the sea chart, letting players plan their course without interrupting the gameplay.

Similar to the updated Ocarina of Time 3D, the UI now as a dedicated button for the Wind Waker baton, treasure-hook and boat-cannon removing the need for players to equip the associated items in an item slot manually whenever they need to use the item. Also, players no longer have to equip a sail in an item slot as the UI now automatically activates it and associates the A and B-buttons with the sail functions contextually appropriate. This makes for a streamlined UI that removes a lot of manual back-and-forth between the game and the inventory screen from the original.

Additionally, like in Pikmin 3, hitting the minus button will instantly switch to Off-TV Play mode, letting players play the game entirely on the GamePad.

Faster Sailing
The HD remake of Wind Waker will feature a few changes and improvements to the overall gameplay. For example, Link is now able to acquire the Swift Sail in the auction house after beating the first dungeon that speeds up sea travel and lets players directly control the ships movement, removing the need to manually use the Wind Waker to change the direction of the wind. When players have to make use of the titular instrument, Link's baton waving can now be performed with touch-screen motions.
Improved Triforce Quest

Steps are also being taken to improve the general pacing of the game, particularly in regards to the Triforce hunt prior to the final dungeon. Players now have to go out and decipher only three sea charts to find Triforce pieces and the remaining five can be acquired instantly. Additionally, it is no longer possible to accidentally skip Tingle Island as a new introductory sequence has been added to the main quest of the game.

Further pacing improvements come via shorter animations and faster text-scroll speed.

Miiverse

Messages in a Bottle
The Tingle Tuner from the original game, which was used to interface with the GameBoy Advance to allow for unique asymmetric gameplay mechanics, is being replaced by Miiverse Integration. Aonuma stated this was decided because the Tingle Tuner was meant to be a "helper tool" to aid the player in tricky situations. Miiverse Integration now comes in the form of messages in a bottle that will wash up on shores containing messages from players left on Miiverse, in a Demon's Souls-like fashion.

Picto Box
Another feature tying into Miiverse is the Picto Box, the in-game camera. Link can now even take photos of himself with a selection of preset facial expressions. The capacity of the Picto Box has also been upped to hold 12 pictures at the same time. All the images taken with the Picto Box can be shared directly via Miiverse.

First Person Mode
Ever since Ocarina of Time, players had the opportunity to go into a first person view mode but Skyward Sword allowed Link to move around freely in first person and look around while using ranged items for the first time. This ability has now been added to The Wind Waker HD. Players still cannot use melee items like the sword in first person, though.

Hero Mode
Taking a book from the most recent Zelda title, Skyward Sword, a harder difficulty mode will be available in Wind Waker, titled Hero Mode. Like in Skyward Sword, enemies will deal twice the amount of damage and Link can no longer obtain hearts from slashing bushes etc. The only way to regain health is using a fairy or consuming a potion. However, unlike in Skyward Sword, this mode is now available right from the time players first boot up the game instead of having to be unlocked by finishing the game once. Hero Mode can be toggled on or off at any time.

. Hero mode and hd are the only changes?

There are some minor changes.

From the top of my head:

Faster Sail: A faster sail that also always has "Wind" so you don't need to change Wind direction when using it.

The ocean loads completely at once: Should make sailing a more streamlined experience.

Triforce Quest: It has been revamped, it seems you now only need to get 3 triforce shards from the sea instead of 8. The other 5 are gotten from chests, but nothing else is known.

Hero mode is available from the start. Can be toggled off at any time.

Pictocamera: Holds 12 shots now. Miiverse support obviously. Link can take selfies

The tingle tuner has been removed. :c

Some miiverse integration like the pictocamera pictures and "message bottles" that appear at sea.

don't like it, prefer the original, HD is welcome of course but it was designed around SD limitations and (little) advantages, it was glorious, now it's so-so, my opinion of course.

So Nintendo will never release a zelda game based on that footage released before the wii u launched.. Where link was older looking looking next gen-ish?

No one can really say for sure. It was a tech demo through and through though so... take that as you will.

Hey, they added a cursor when you aim with the canon on the boat. I noticed it in a previous video but didn't really process what I was noticing until that newer compilation video. There was a lot of fudging for the canon before, so this will be nice.

Man the volume of tiny little tweaks to usability and functionality in this game is insane. The treasure maps on the gamepad while you try to position your ship over them are another huge one.

[Edit] And yeah I totally noticed a music change in the Wind's Requiem, it trails off into what sounds like an orchestrated violin right at the end.

All they've said is that it'll be something unique. I'm guessing they'll go with the an improved, updated version of the tech demo style.

Aonuma said:
The thing about Zelda is we want everything to be unique, whether it’s the graphical presentation or the gameplay. It has to be something you can’t see anywhere else. We wouldn’t want it to be ultra-realistic because you can see that elsewhere. But I can’t say that it’s going to be cartoony-realistic like you mentioned, the fantastic presentation that we’ve already done in the past. It will be something new.

Most likely no. They never release games that look exactly like their tech demos. However the positive is that the actual Zelda games have always looked better then the system tech demos.

It's an old and perhaps overused graphic but gets the point across quicker. So based on history we know we what we can somewhat expect. I imagine something looking closer to Monolith Soft's X in terms of possible scale and graphical level. Which is above what was shown in the Wii U tech demo. The Link we get has to be the adult one simply because we are getting kid Link in both TLoZ: The Wind Waker HD and TLoZ: A Link Between Worlds. The graphical style has to be different from both of those as well.

Miyamoto upending all dem tea tables (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

Sorry for double post but some new gameplay footage has been posted up . I don't have an ear for these things, but I keep hearing from people that they think some of the music has been updated.

I like the neon effect the bloom has in some dark, interior places. Increases atmosphere little and looks nice. Although I think it's a bit overdone and unnecessary in some areas like the last pic below. More heat=more bloom I guess.
That looks fantastic.

Also is it me or is there some anti-aliasing? Good to see it in a 1080p game.

Oh and anyone notice the slowdown during the footage? Hopefully that gets sorted.
