New Zelda Wind Waker HD videos

I played this game once throughout the summer and beat it just in time for my 10th anniversary playthrough. Then I started a Second Quest file immediately afterwards. I'm aiming for 100%, something I've actually never done before in this game, and I'm loving every moment of it. Aiming to have it done by the time the remaster comes out.

This is my all-time favorite Zelda. I love the sailing, I love the incredible atmosphere, I love the jabby nature of Link's swordplay, and, fuck me, I now love the bloom even if it's not perfect. I am going to play the living shit out of this remake and analyze all the differences and I AM GOING TO LOVE IT.

Jeeze, aiming for a 100% run for your first time immediately BEFORE playing the Wii U one? Sounds like a perfect recipe for burnout to me. I definitely couldn't do that.

I played Wind Waker twice when I got it, 100% the first time barring figures, all figures in the new game + second playthrough. Did a non-100% run a year or two ago. I'm ready for 100% again, but only because it's a new version of the game, and I haven't done it since like 2003. Getting all figures twice in as many months sure sounds miserable.

Hmm, having a hard time noticing it. Admittedly I'm really not sensitive to framerate slowdowns in games, one of my friends gives me shit for that. I think it's a pretty okay handicap to have!

haha, yeah that's a good thing to have. The bombs blowing up make it apparent to me.

Kinda reminds me of me never knowing what tearing was until god of war 2 and now that I've seen it games that have it assault my eyeballs.

On second thought, it might not be slowdown, but some weird visual effect. Either way, it's arse.

idk if its slowdown from the game, it could just be a visual effect because the canon ships are farther away

yeah, not sure. I think it's just the whole explosion. It happens on the next part against the squid, and I don't think it's the normal staggering Zelda does for things like sword spins. Atleast I don't recall WW doing that before.

I've been on an incredible run with completing games lately (played through the entire Kirby series and replayed Tales of Symphonia three times within the span of the past year for the sake of a 100% run as well). Honestly, I'm just at a loss as you are as to where this "man on a mission" mode came from, but it feels satisfying. Plus, I love analyzing Nintendo remakes and whatnot, so that's probably the drive here.

As for the figures, not really. It's my first time doing it and I'm having fun collecting them in-between the various sidequests and whatnot. Most of the repetion that annoyed people (conducting the Wind Waker/sailing/the Triforce quest) never actually bothered me, so I'm having a blast.

the video in the OP has it in numerous scenes (boss fight @ 0:48 and ship fights @ 0:41 are two) but it does look like it's also some sort of "intentional" hit effect, but I can't tell...

Also I'm glad the game's bloom is only in open-air scenes like the town and not everywhere. The visuals look great when indoors or in dungeons (way better than dolphin imo). Even on the sea it kinda fits, but anywhere in town and it looks like someone poured grease on the camera. :\

Which HD port is full price though? I see them for EUR 20 or EUR 30. But then they were also not marketed as a major holiday title because there was a constant stream of new titles coming on other platforms, so there was no real need to do so.

I agree that Wind Waker HD is overpriced by 10€. 49€ should be the price.

Yes, but I dunno if the frame stop can be apply when you shoot with the canon on the boat.

We need to compare against the source videos. All the clips in that NinEverything compilation are from the Japanese website.

I could be wrong but I believe the slowdowns are in the same places they were in the GameCube version, but my memory could be failing me.

So perhaps it's just a visual effect? I know there's a slowdown when you hit certain enemies with the sword, and that's done on purpose.

Wow.

Screw the haters, this looks fantastic.

Anyone knows how to set YouTube to one quality setting and not ever having to set it again every time you go to a YouTube vid?

Anybody knows the framerate?

Some say 60 fps, but Gamersyde (very reliable on this kind of info) says 30 fps. But their offscreen video runs at 30 so it's impossible to say.

I think it is 30, 1080p * 60 fps would be awesome but too much for the wii U. It would add so much to the overall look of the game aniway

WW has always been 30 fps.

1080p at 60 fps is possible on Wii U, isn't that already confirmed for SSB and MK8? Anyway, whether it's 30fps or 60fps doesn't make a noticeable difference to most people anyway. Seems to be just GAF that makes a big fuss about it heh

Like Shiggy said, 1080/60 isn't too much for it at all. It entirely depends on the game in question.

That said, WW is 30.

Speaking of framerate, I noticed some weird slowdown in that Gohma boss fight video and asked Josh if that was from the game or the capture process:

Any slowdown or glitches you see in any video at TheBitBlock is related to the game itself and not the capturing or editing process. Wind Waker runs very smooth, but maybe 1 or 2 times you'll see a bit of slow down. Nothing drastic or annoying though.

that was the first video link i watched, and i picked up on it straight away, nothing too bad. I even think it might be part of the the game design.....didn't it slow down at certain battle points on purpose.
It's in this video, clearly slows down when ghoma splashes down into the lava.
Nothing too bad given that it's probably one of the most engine straining moments in the game.

The graphics are really good, none of the Dolphin shots come even close.
However, the sailing video is really off putting and bringing down the slight enthusiasm I might have had for this. Video is basically a minute of literally nothing happening - yep, that's fucking Wind Waker for you :/ And I have forgotten how pointlessly big/empty the map really is.

Good thing they put the Swift Sail in it then.

Oh god I love this game, can't wait to set off on a grand adventure once again.

Which why they added the faster sail which should cut that down.

Not I will be using the fast sail.

I had the same feeling on my first playthrough. After years i came back and i liked it tremendously. You need to play a Zelda game without rushing it. Just live in it. Sail here, sail there. It became my most favorite part actually. ^^

I think the new lighting engine really improves that visuals.

Barely a half assed solution that makes some of the sailing shorter, but not less terrible.

I was a little excited after the graphical improvements lately, but in reality one's gotta face that a simple HD remaster is never gonna turn this into a great game. WW would need a full remake, with tons of additional events on the overworld map.

When I've played it at launch, I was at first amazed at the freedom and size of the world. Unfortunately, once you look behind the farce, there's no going back. Even on my second playthrough. You just know that there's literally nothing to explore. One underwhelming mini island in each quarter of the map and the sailing inbetween might as well be 5 minute long loading screens. Even with the poorly placed warp points later on.

Well, he seems to be sailing to nowhere using the default sail. If he were sailing to an island with the swift sail, and with the game's improved draw distance, it'd seem much quicker and less empty. Don't forget other small things that have been streamlined like to improve the whole sailing experience and ultimately the whole pacing of the game.

1) Rather than being an equip item, players will now activate the Sail by pressing the B button while on board their ship. The Wind Waker baton, on-ship cannon, and treasure-grabbing crane are also permanently mapped to the D-pad, eliminating the need to manually equip these items to use them.

2) Animations for the Grapple Hook – both latching onto a swing point and lowering/raising the crane on the ship – have been greatly reduced to speed up these processes.

3) When conducting songs using the Wind Waker, the “playback” for these songs has been slightly sped up. When using the Wind’s Requiem to change the wind, the camera will now pan to show you which objects lie ahead in each cardinal direction. Players can also use the touch screen to conduct with the Wind Waker and rotate the wind direction.

4) A targeting reticle has been added to the on-ship cannon to improve accuracy. The reticule also features a guide showing the cannon’s firing arc.

The slow down during the Gohma boss fight is also in the original game. I'm leaning on it being intentional design so the player can actually avoid the lava rocks that fall down. If it went at normal speed, it'd be a lot easier to get hit by them. It's also probably slower for effect (because it looks "cooler" lol).

I agree, but I had this feeling since the1st time I played, this was such a unique experience for me, sailing the seas and pulling up treasure and watching the days go by as im sailing, signifying that I was doing it for a long time, I loved it. You should never try to rush in a zelda game.

I've played every zelda with this mindset and I think that's why I've had a better experience with them than others who go in rushing. A big part of the series has always been about exploration and immersing the player in its world, and it's hard to do that when you're running straight for the combat, skipping all cutscenes, text, not interacting with npc's or exploring.

I can understand If some people like the action/combat aspect of zelda most, but zelda's always been about a mixture of different gameplay elements so it's like you're preventing yourself from getting the full experience if you ignore other aspects. I guess as you get older, people have less time and patience to go into large, long games with this mindset but the recent zelda intros, sailing, triforce quest, tadtones and other common zelda complains didn't bother me as much. Some of those parts I even lied, and didn't like for reasons.

Precisely. I understand that as you get older, there's not a lot of time to play, but so many people play games in such a hurry to get to the end, they become unable to actually take the time to savor and enjoy them. Instead they become irritable and quick to burst into nerd rage at the tiniest thing.

That sailing video... I can't believe how good this game looks. It's just so pretty. The colors... The lighting... Incredible.

The Gohma Boss battle looks amazing, but there IS slowdown in that video.

Near the beginning.

EDIT: Is it me, or is stuff missing from the HUD? The button layout is nowhere to be seen.

I will always defend the opening of both skyward sword in twilight princess, I love that shit, just starting out as a normal person and just doing things for people and living a ordinary day

If I could walk into bestbuy and buy this bundle today, I would. They need this out ASAP.

With the price cut, and the bundle, I am ready to buy. WiiU is getting more attractive.

Bitblock's videos show that you can remove most of the HUD. AWESOME! That bundle is getting more tempting with every single video. Also do we have any pictures of what the Zelda gamepad that come with it looks like in real life?

I have no idea how I can be hyped for a game I've played through at least twice (can't remember). I think the graphics look fantastic, and I want the next Wii U Zelda to have the same art style.

Weren't you able to get rid off the button layout in SS?
