I didn't expect it but I'm able to get my Shield to stream with our old router that isn't 5ghz and it seems to work very well.

Back to the dpad issue, I was on live chat with NV's support and the person I talked to understood what the problem was and agreed to help set up an RMA. I referenced one of you posts sidCrazy at geforce.com since you seem to have gone through multiple Shields already with the same problem and the support guy told me not to worry and that they would make sure the replacement does not possess the same issues before they send it out.

Yes, they said they were checking them before sending them out, this last shield I received has a much better DPAD. Nothing I'd put on the level of say Vita's DPAD, but it's nowhere as bad as the Shields I had before it.

All I can recommend is to keep on RMA'ing if you're not satisfied. They overnight these things to you and you don't even have to send yours in first.

They had actually sent me two shield replacements, before I even sent one back. Customer service is great, just wish the quality control was at the same level.

I'm lucky I got working dpad then (it's early Shield too,got it first week of august)

any word on new fw to fix the slowness going with the UI because of system Update 59?

Uh, I won one of these things at PAX. I'm at the airport wondering what I can do with this thing. I don't have a good video card so I guess I can't stream? At all? Not even movies?

So what can I do with this? Just android tablet?

Nothing other than they're working on a new update, somebody on one of the forums I visit says they spoke with Nvidia customer service and were told to expect another update this month.

Emulators, android games/apps, music/video player/internet browser...There are plenty of apps on the Play Store that let you stream your music/movies to your shield. You only need an Nvidia card if you want to stream steam games to your Shield.

Or you can sell it for easy money :P

GTX 650 is just $110 (or lower) right now.

Without GTX6xx/7xx for streaming PC games you can still use it for android games and all sorts of emulators(it's really amazing emulator device) and a normal android device.

This month..good.

Its pretty much the fastest android device out now at the moment. I even ran the same benchmarks sites like gsmarena did with some new snapdragon 800 phones coming out and eventhough those are newer (and supposedly faster than tegra 4?), I'm still outscoring them. That means it runs just about any emulator you can throw at it if that's your thing. Android games also seem to run flawlessly.

If you want to stream without an nvidia card, you should still be able to with apps like splashtop (I haven't tried though). You can't stream games though as good as Shield's native streaming option, but movies should still stream fine.

DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD

This is the definitive way to play Pokemon Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, and Crystal! OR EVEN POKEMON TCG, POKEMON PINBALL, WARIO LAND 2, WARIO LAND 1, SUPER MARIO LAND 1 and 2, OOOOOOOOOHHHHHHH.

Thanks for the pics. I'm definitely getting one of these now.

I said it before, Shields is the emulators king and nothing even come close to it, it run most emulators flawlessly (even PPSSPP and Drastic run very well on it) and having full controller layout and triggers with a touch screen make it the best portable device for emulators.

This is the way to play these games imo:

PC retroarch but I believe the overlays and filters should work too on the android version

That filter looks nice, border not so much. Have no idea how to get that filter on Retroarch for android though.

Retroarch runs things incredibly well. I'd like to pick up some Android games that are really good and utilize it well, but I really don't know what does or where to look for such.

Look here for games that play well on the Shield.

I've actually purchased two of these in a weeks time. It's an incredibly solid device, and there was something really cool about waking up, pulling it out of my nightstand, and booting up PC games in bed. Really, really awesome. I just wish there was a virtual keyboard when streaming from your PC.

anyway if you are looking for game that take advantage of Tegra gpu (add special effect and other stuff), search for Tegra Optimized games, like Dead Trigger (the upcoming Dead Trigger 2 will be as well), Blood Sword, Demon’s Score THD, Dark Meadow: The Pact, The Conduit HD, Burn Zombie Burn, Blood Mansion, Dead on Arrival 2, Riptide GP 2 and other

Dead Trigger 2 looked damn amazing when I tried it. I wonder though if it has real Tegra 4 exclusive effects (the original's exclusive effects ran on other non tegra devices just as good).

Anyway, I just realized that I could stream just about anything through Steam's Big Picture mode:

Pcsx2 without the need to sit in front of a TV or use my computer!

Nvidia was using Dead Trigger 2 to show off Tegra 4 (and Shield) so yeah I guess it'll have real Tegra effect that will not be on other devices.

Edit: game also will have "powered by Tegra" tag/splash screen

Im sold on this thing but need guidance

Can it play Dark Douls??? Purchase is hanging on this.

I dont have any PCs with nvidia GPUs, so Im reading that I need a GTX 650, how is that card for gaming at 720p? I have a server rig under my stairs with a i7 2600k and I was thinking about putting the 650 there exclusively for the shield.

Im trying to spend as litle as possible to get this working, im thinking about buying the 650 for $100 and then the Shield.

According to the community spreadsheet it does(except for the Dark Souls: Prepeare to Die Editon apparently), check it out: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Al_tgDiSllFFdGhJQ3p3d1JDTU0wS3IyNjVxdDB6MVE#gid=0

I have no idea about the GTX 650.

Whoa. I saw the spreadsheet and noticed FFXIV ARR works with the shield. Hot dang! This device is shaping up to be in my top 3 handhelds of all time and I haven't even gotten it yet! Well, I'll receive it on Monday.

Ouya and Shield
sitting in a tree,
B O M B I N G.

Surprisingly enough after a nightmare scenario trying to get my Ouya order right I actually use it frequently. Of course just as an emulator and media player but still. The new vlc app for it is pretty good.

Noticed some emulators are a hit and miss so I'm using GBC.emu right now which is a pay for one. Anyhow.

GB/GBC has perfect pixels in native aspect ratio.

h6UUqBk.jpg

SNES games have perfect pixels it seems too. This particular screen shot is stretched, however it keeps the perfect pixels without any blur despite being stretched. My camera is lousy so the screenshot sucks big time compared to how it looks in person. But you can get a full, clear screen with SNES games.

I'm still trying to get my feel on the device before I post my actual impressions, but I will say the bumpers kind of suck for video games.

Always buy emu's by Robert Broglia. Seriously.

OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD!!!

It runs PERFECTLY.

It feels exactly like playing a Wii U game on the Wii U Game Pad. I'm just using some comcast router at that! OH MY GOD! WOOO!!!! YEAHHHHH

I had to right click steam and make sure the compatibility stuff was unchecked in all users, but after that everything runs perfect.

'm guessing you don't want to remove that sticker until you get a screen protector or something?

Yep. Haha.

Always buy emu's by Robert Broglia. Seriously.

I'll check those out! thanks!

Thanks to everyone for ur suggestions, ended up picking the Shield up today and after some struggles got it working, im so impressed and happy with this.

Only played Batman Arkham city so far and im loving it, im finally going to play all the PC games I have neglected while my girlfriend watches her soaps.

OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD!!!

Please tell me how you did this, im setting everything up right now!

Played some FFXIV on it, it doesn't run as well as Dolphin does oddly enough. However, it's playable and that's all that matters to me.

Here's Tenkaichi 3 for Wii.

OB2ZrAL.jpg

Surprisingly enough, Melee felt really good to play on this despite the 30 FPS streaming.

Please tell me how you did this, im setting everything up right now!

1. Go to your Steam directory and find Steam.EXE in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam".

5Nx5KXI.png

2. Right click Steam.EXE and go to Properties.
3. Go to compatibility tab and make sure all compatibility modes, including in all user settings, are UNCHECKED.

TGHnF5G.png

4. On Steam itself, add a non-steam game and just add Dolphin.EXE from your folder.
5. Now that it's added to steam, connect to your PC in the Shield Menu then select Steam.
6. Now go to your games lists and find "dolphin" and start it up. It'll appear on both screens. Just click a game and walla, you're playing a Gamecube on a portable.

Notes:

1. Before connecting your PC to the shield, make sure your PC has completely booted up if you've restarted or else you'll connect before some Nvidia processes are ready.
2. If it doesn't work, reboot your computer.
3. Add the steam directory in Geforce Experience if Steam doesn't show up

So everything you've shown is just PC streaming via steam? Nothing installed on the actual android OS? So your examples aren't for portable gaming, but for streaming pc?

Gamecube/Wii and FFXIV, yeah. Game Boy and SNES? that's strictly from the device itself. The guy who codes Dolphin said he'd work on a one for the shield if someone got him a shield since he can't afford one. Other than that, you have to stream.

You can also play PSP and N64 straight from the device without streaming. Star Fox 64 ran like butter.

this thread is making me consider the Shield just for that streaming function...

That's why I got it, hopefully it will be stable, just got it today. I spend a lot of time with my girlfriend in the couch, used to just browse GAF and reddit, looking forward to actually beat my games.

So I think I found why Dark Souls works for some people and not for others.

I cant get the game to work if I have Durante DSFix installed, it doesnt like something about the streaming.

If I run the game without streaming it works just fine.

Too bad because I was dying to supersample it :(

Maybe someone here has dark Souls running with DSFix and im just doing something wrong?

Tempted to grab one later this month when I'm not poor, worried the price will drop or they will put a revision out immediately given the kind of device it is. Is there any chance they will put out one with a Tegra 4 any time soon?

Already is tegra 4 :p

Well I feel silly, for whatever reason I thought it was a 3 or something similarly outdated. Suppose it won't be replaced any time soon then, although I don't keep as much track on their mobile graphics schedule. Apparently there is a Tegra 4 revision unveiled? Just don't want to buy one of these and have it be made useless a month later when the better version comes out. With a Vita or what have you the hardware will remain the same so I don't worry about it.
