Is Capcom the next THQ?

Far far from it.
Capcom are still selling games like RE6 with 6 million in sales, updates to SFIV and the ability to create completely new IPs(taking a risk) Asuras Wrath, Remember Me, Dragons Dogma and Deep down, they're faaaar from turning into THQ. That being said, they have some of the biggest bullshit business practices of any company. They make great games but some of the worse consumer policies and scams within the entire industry.

And:
They are doing it to themselves. Utterly baffling decisions all over the place.

About Capcom i think the only one u can blame for this is Capcom...

Look what they did with Resident Evil... DMC...

Why not making a new Onimusha?
Why not making Resident Evil go back to origins?

They have caused their problem...

How does the company that makes Street Fighter and Monster Hunter have so little money?

Because they blow it all on Big budget titles that don't sell like RE6 Dragons Dogma and fuck up games that could have sold great with dumb DLC on disc policy. SFxTk could have been a hit but nope they ucked that up bad.

Lots of hyperbole in this thread already.

THQ had next to no bankable franchises that actually generated them money. WWE is a big name, but they have to pay for that. Saints Row but I think it was to late in the game to expect one franchise to completely prop them up. They invested way to much in U-Draw for no return.

Capcom doesn't do big projects like U-Draw for a reason. They also have some of the biggest franchises outside of Nintendo. Of which they don't have to pay anyone for. Not an excuse for the poor quality of some titles lately, but they'll be fine.

Can't exactly do that correctly without the talent behind those games. Capcom has been bleeding talent for years.

I always thought Nintendo was onto something with the low tech level, and this is the perfect opportunity. They should try to attract companies who can't handle super high dev costs on their system. Capcom could bring the next Castlevania home.

Been a fan of Capcom IPs since a kid, so I'm worried. It looks real bad. That being said, I certainly don't give them a pass on their decisions. I hope they right the ship. Man, does that cash seem terribly low.

Unfortunately, Monster Hunter will continue to treat their cancer, but there seems to be no real cure. They'll linger on as a mere image of their former self.

We'll know for sure if we see a Capcom Humble Bundle.

Doubt it... a merger would happen before full on bankruptcy.

in any case Capcom has many things going for them.

- Massive Library
- Solid Fanbase
- Brand Awareness

The problem with Capcom is that they're abandoning their formula for success and also complicating their games to the point that they're just not enjoyable (RE / DmC). They need to get back to their roots and create titles that made them successful. light hearted games that are easy to get into but harder to master.

I agree with this sentiment a lot.

Resident Evil 6 sold 5 million. While Dragons Dogma sold around 1.5 million with enough success to get a retail update. What didn't sell?

Plus, you get the insane nonsense from other gamers who want to go back to crappy inventory system, terrible camera angle hinderance and tank controls.
Resident Evil to go back to it's original form. Um no.

Capcom would do much better if they weren't so lazy and thick. Their business decisions when it comes to outsourcing is laughable and fully deserved of failure. They don't even try to support the shite they outsource and then go back and do more outsourcing of garbage anyway. Absurd.

They're pissing money out of their arse and it's impossible to be sympathetic to it. Resident Evil 6's development and team numbers read like true comedy. They can't even put together coherent teams and ideas in their biggest and arguably most talented teams without something falling apart.

If it weren't for Resident Evil, Monster Hunter and Street Fighter, they'd absolutely go the way of the dinosaur and would have done already. A complete and utter shame what the company has turned in to.

Like I said in another Capcom thread, I wouldn't be surprised if they turn Resident Evil in to an annual thing. It - along with Street Fighter - are the only console franchises they can make decent money off of now. It's upsetting to see the sorry state of Devil May Cry but there you go.

Dragon's Dogma was a decent effort though so it shows that if they had the RIGHT ideas (see Deep Down too as a potential winner for them), they can do some good for gamers and strive for potentially good returns. However, Dragon's Dogma was a right but RELEVANT idea too due to the big desire for these types of RPG's currently. Half the time they either cater to what the audience wants or they waste money on stuff no one ever asked for in the numbers to warrant a legitimate release (see Lost Planet 3).

THQ had three things come at them at the same time that killed them.

1. The almost complete collapse of the low end license market
2. Going all in on the the tablet fad, and Call of Duty money train and losing.
3. The worse economy the industry has ever seen that prevented them from getting the credit they needed to continue operations.

Capcom has issues but they are nowhere near as bad as THQs

How does a company with so many amazing IPs get to this position?

Terrible, terrible company.

IPs aren't everything if you don't know how to handle them and if all the talent is leaving the company. It's just sad.

i wouldnt mind crapcom going under, and having to sell off its properties.... god knows theyre doing shit with them.

Hell fucking no! And who get's the IPs? If someone like Activision gets their fingers on Resident Evil and Dragon's Dogma I can say goodbye to those games. Or they're going exclusive to a certain platform holder, which would be just as bad. I rather want Capcom to get their shit toghether again.

Bomb after bomb. Capcom can't seem to catch a break. They need a tentpole franchise, now that Resident Evil is effecitvely dead.Quit doing outsourcing and buying off western studios and start producing stuff domestically. New fresh IP's just like Deep Down is exactly the stuff they need to be doing.

Japanese industry is not in a good shape unfortunately....it's not like Square Enix, Konami, Namco, Sega are in a better position.....we all hoped they were getting ready to go out with a bang on next gen but that doesn't seem to be the case.
They can't even afford to go next gen except for their biggest games which are an absolute safe bet. The rest is mobile and current gen platforms to survive.
In particular Capcom has destroyed itself during the last generation, their strategy to go after american gamers with soulless games made by marketing teams has basically killed them as a major player in the industry.

With $152 million in cash isn't that one resident evil flop away from going bankrupt?

You mean to say Ono is the only person you recognize as someone who reads a lot of GAF. I don't think talent has anything to do with it.

Inafune - gone
Mikami - gone
Kamiya - gone

That is a huge loss of talent. With them gone the quality of games made by capcom has plummeted. They no longer have the leadership they once had and it shows.

Megaman has disappeared since inafune left. Only fan made games have been made.

Resident evil has gone down quickly since Inafune left. The last was awful and cost the company a shitload.

Devil may cry... do I really need to say anything?

Three core series that have gone to shit since these three men left.

Investing a lot of money into Resident Evil makes a lot of sense considering that it's their biggest franchise. RE has just gone off tracks because it's no longer the trend setting series it used to be. It was once the series that dictated what survival horror games did, yet now it's imitating other games that aren't even associated with the genre. That's a series that very much needs a reboot.

Nah. Capcom has a massive catalogue titles. Monster Hunter 4(?) is due out soon on 3DS, Dead Rising 3 on Xbox One…

They need to stop making shitty games, outsourcing etc but I think they'll be fine.

Deep Down due on PS4 in February too, all games that would have taken money out of the pot but will (hopefully) put back into it.

I do think that Monster Hunter would have benefitted from WiiU/PS3/PS4/Vita maybe Xbox versions for the west but Capcom like to be exclusive so I hope it works out for them.

Wait, did I miss this? Was it given a Japanese release window already?

They aren't the next THQ, they are the next Sega.

One main difference is that at least Sega never had any difficulty with marketing their kid-friendly blue mascot character. Even through the worst of Sonic's career, he was still profitable for them and he's still got devoted/rabid fans, young and old.

MM and his fans can only wish that Capcom gave them the same type of attention.

But Ono is still there(for how long) and the fighting game section is still pretty solid*.
Solid with an asterisk meaning, they're good but there's something pulling them back.
Whether it's a terrible fighting game system like SFxT, comeback mechanics like X-factor, DLC and locked content out the arse or judging sales to determine the future of a series(Darkstalkers).
It's stable...but you can see the cracks and I honestly see Ono leaving at some point. He's the last dude left on that list.

Mobile
but they are already doing it so I don't know
.

SEGA has the same problem guess SE is next :P.

Sega's getting that Sammy money though, so the shareholders don't really care if their video game section doesn't do well. When you make more money selling Pachinko machines than video games, you've done alright for yourself.

I wish Sega would just sell all their properties to someone else, they're never going to use them again.

WTF? 152 million? Is this real? That's absurdly low for the company that owns Street Fighter, Resident Evil, Mega Man, Monster Hunter, Devil May Cry, etc.

Stuff like that makes me realize why Nintendo focuses on talented staff rather than just relying on just successful IPs.

Apart from the devs, I hope they are. It's a terribly run company who has become worse every year this gen has gone on. Incompetence, selfishness, moneyhungry stupidity. Making games nobody asked for and not making games that are in demand. Sell off their IPs to acompany that actually knows how to deliver because Capcpom no longer is capable of deliverying anything but overhyped shit.

That's why I only mentioned RE6. It'd made sense, it just didn't make them any real profit and it astounds me how they thought it would sell more than FE5 out the gate. I know they were expecting 7mill or something at first before they kept revising the numbers. Granted it was a chance they could have pulled it off but SFxTk killed their momentum with lots of their other titles.

Man, if that's all the fucking cash they have, their Monster Hunter exclusivity deal with Nintendo is not fucking working out in their favor at all. Time to put Monster Hunter on everything.

Letting go most of most of their talented people.
Not pleasing the fans and making them, in turn, hate the company for giving them hope for something that won't exist. (Ace Attorney for example and oh boy how could I forget: Megaman Legends 3)
Stupid DLC practices.

It was bound to happen, they should go back to the PS2 era and realize what made them so great back then.

For comparison's sake, didn't GTA cost around 230 millions to make?

It's actually shocking to learn that in the past year, DmC was in their top 3 seller at 1.1 million. That game was a bomb for them.

Another shocker to me is 1.2 million expected sales for Lost Planet 3.
