What anime besides Steins; Gate and Attack on Titan are worth watching?

Yamato 2199!

Watch the movie trilogy or the original TV series before you watch Zeta. It's a direct sequel, so I'd argue that viewing the original first is a perquisite.

You should also look into some of the UC spinoffs that were OVA mini-series, like 8th MS Team and War In The Pocket; the two of those are superior to everything on your list except Zeta.

Nah, those ovas are cute but you can't have them knock out entire series like Turn A and Wing. Both of those are STELLAR. I know Wing gets shit on sometimes for being a bit pretty boy, but the political threads and twists in that story make it hard to believe it was ever targeted towards anyone under the age of 16. Treize is one of the deepest characters that series has ever given us. Turn A is something really special as well. You sort of can't go wrong with Gundam..except 00. Even Gundam X has some memorable moments.

Krist..I love Greed Island.. I remember back in 2001 or whenever it was ordering the first volume of the ova. It's back when the goal of finding Ging was driving everything. Chimera Ant arc totally wipes that out though.

I feel like a minority with Greed Island being my favorite finished arc so far (haven't read the manga).

OK guys here's the deal...

Now that I'm going through my anime and looking for new stuff to watch, I'm planning to eventually start getting into Gundam. I have read in certain forums that these are the essential Gundams to watch...

Zeta Gundam
Gundam Wing
Turn A Gundam
Gundam Seed

Any other ones besides these I should be bothered with?

Also, what order should I watch those four in? Should I start with Zeta Gundam first? Then what?

I have seen the Movie Trilogy but haven't watched it about 13 years. Don't really remember anything about it.

Watch 0080 first, its only 6 episodes and the single best Gundam thing period.

If you liked FLCL and Gurren Laggan's aesthetics, do be be sure to check Abenobashi - IMO it's Gainax's best work, yet criminally undermentioned in threads like these.
It starts out as slice of life, but soon shifts into a different genre parody per episode like Excel Saga, but better and in a way that absolutely serves the core story.

If you're looking into the Tomino mech classics, the 2 Ideon movies could be worthy, both compression and expanding the story of the series that immediately followed the original MSG - the structure of the early episodes is even similar, but soon becomes something special of its own, despite the odd aesthetics and names.

If you end up watching Welcome to the NHK! and/or Watamote, be sure to watch Genshiken - the mindsets of the protagonists aren't too far off, but they do something a bit more constructive about it, which makes for a more uplifting and fun experience. 'Twas a bit of a life-changer for me and I can't recommend it enough.

I'm rarely "that" person, but the anime totally fucked up the manga. The ending is also wildly different (the manga probably wasn't finished at the time), and it completely misses the point.

The manga does go to some dark, unpleasant places, which the anime tends to skim out, sometimes leading to strange side-effects. Character has a bad drug trip? No, in the anime, he just randomly hallucinates his fridge is talking to him. That's... better somehow?

huh, interesting. Guess I'll have to check out the manga. I still love the anime though, one of my all time favs (not that I've seen a lot of animes). The soundtrack too is brilliant. So another vote for Welcome to the NHK.

Surprised that Soul Eater hasn't been mentioned till now.

I'm currently watching Soul Eater. Art style and animation are great but the actual show hasn't been exactly gripping to be honest. It's only started to pick up and I'm at episode 12 so I don't find that to be a great sign.

Only suggestions are Gintama and maybe Psycho Pass.
Gintama anime always goes on breaks because they catch up with the manga. It also starts off really slow just so it can establish the world. After those first ten or so episodes it's just really awesome, arcs are not particularly long and most episodes are self contained with only a few references to past episodes every now and then. It's a sci fi/comedy that parodies almost everything, even itself, and one of the shows I'd readily say just gets better as you watch it. If it doesn't work out for you at first, it's okay. Just keep at it (you don't have to watch all of it at once) because it really does get good eventually.

Psycho Pass wasn't the great when I first watched it (it has a lot of potential but sort of just blunders aimlessly about halfway through) though the concept is interesting and I don't know, maybe it'll get better with the upcoming second season that's been announced.

I'd personally avoid One Piece, Sword Art Online and Ao No Exorcist/Blue Exorcist.

Sword Art Online, I'm pretty biased about this I'm not going to lie. I couldn't stand 3 episodes of this, too much stupid bullshit and melodrama.

One Piece is a one chapter = one episode basis from what I've watched, some people might prefer to just read since it's a lot quicker. I also didn't like the art style.

Blue Exorcist starts off great and then just really fizzles halfway through. It doesn't help that it has a filler/original ending. I don't know, maybe if you're interested in the movie this might be good supplementary material but frankly I just found it to be a miserable pile of disappointment. At least the art style is pretty too look at.

Other animes I'd stay away from are Eyeshield 21 and Majin Tentei Nougami Neuro purely because they are terrible anime adaptations and you are better off reading the manga.

GTO, a hundred times GTO. Onizuka is incredible. Manly tears.

Edit - Other recommendations

OK guys here's the deal,

I want you to sell me on One Piece.

I have been contemplating giving One Piece a viewing for a while now but this thread has given me somewhat of a hard on for it and my curiosity is peaked. I won't be watching it now, but I expect sometime maybe around end of October or so. Keep in mind I said *contemplating*, because I just don't know if I can swallow those ridiculous, zany and goofy character designs and art style.

I attempted to watch this show way back a few years ago on Cartoon Network and was extremely put off by both the character designs and the English dub. However, many people claim the story and plot more than make up for its shortcomings. Is this really true?

Basically what I'm asking is, from a serious skeptic, why should I give One Piece a chance?

For reference, I love the DB and DBZ to D-E-A-T-H-!!!!! It's arguably my favorite anime of ALL time!

Serial Experiments Lain. The first season of Ranma 1/2, comedy gold.

El Hazard: The Magnificent World(fantasy, OAV series only).

Bubblegum Crisis 2032(meaning the 80s version, not the horrible remake).

That's why you should give it a chance.

Few people like the art style at first. Took a good while for it to grow on me.

One Piece is an absolutely massive adventure, and not just for the sake of being massive. It has an overarching plot with events and revelations foreshadowed decades in advance, a ridiculously large colorful cast of characters, a great sense of escalation, legitimately compelling drama, great and clever large-scale fights, and some damn creative locales. It's the very definition of "adventure".

Now the anime definitely has issues, particularly pacing and some below average animation, but so did DB/Z. I say give it a shot, though don't expect to love it within the first 10, 20, or possibly even 30 episodes. There are some hardcore fans that absolutely hated the first 30 episodes out there, but now understand why the relatively low-key intro arcs are necessary.

Full Metal Panic! Series

Fullmetal Alchemist Series

Bubblegum Crisis

And of course the obvious: Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, but these are a given.

Many of these are on Netflix streaming.

A single episode of LoGH is better than every episode of SnK & S;G combined.

No. I like interesting things to happen in one episode

You know what's better than LoGH in the same genre? Space Battleship Yamato 2199.

The OP is better than any single episode of LoGH.

This thread is great. Not only is Attack on Titan the best manga to anime adaptation ever, its apparently better than Legend of the Galactic Heroes too. I await the Citizen Kane comparisons next.

You don't watch One Piece. You read One Piece.

I started reading OP, thought it was boring. I got excited after pushing through it a little more, all the way up to some sort of underwater Shellfish island thing in One Piece and got very bored again.

Haven't touched it since.

If you like attack on titan because of how it depicts humanity trying to survive against huge overwhelming odds then check out Blue Gender.

Definitely check out Fullmetal alchemist: Brotherhood -- though it might behoove you to check out the original fullmetal alchemist as well because they sort of rush through the first 20 episodes because they're remakes of the first 30 or so of the original series. It's a great series.

The Twelve Kingdoms is a great series -- especially the third arc. It's a story about being spirited away.

For an emotional, heart-felt series check out ano hi mita hana no namae wa bokutachi ga mada shiranai. It's only 11 episodes and it tells the story of a group of friends who grow apart.

For a solid romance comedy -- and one of the most popular of all time check out Love Hina. The manga is better but the anime is great as well.

Monster is solid story-telling.

Claymore is great but it only tells the story up to a certain extent of the manga.

Another plus in the "Cromartie High School" column. Fantastic dub of a fantastic satire of all of the worst parts of high school drama anime. It's got that very anarchistic self-aware tone that reminds me a lot of some of the longer Monty Python sketches.

Um, where is Royal Space Force (Honneamise) in this thread? A life-changing anime movie for some, if only an unreasonably ambitious and rough work of brilliance. There's a cheaper Blu coming out very soon, so there's no more excuse to complain about Bandai's HD-DVD combo pack any more. It's a must-see for me!

That, and Night on the Galactic Railroad. And Little Norse Prince. And more than a few of the old Toei Doga movies from the '60s, animated by guys like Miyazaki.
