What anime besides Steins; Gate and Attack on Titan are worth watching?

FMA was made before the manga ended so there's filler episodes and the story line diverges a good bit from that in the manga.

FMA;B is a retelling of the story while staying a lot more close to what happened in the manga. Think of it as a more accurate remake.

Accurate, my ass. It reduces the two most important manga arcs to two episodes, filling in the blanks in ONE of them in OVAs, removes other important scenes, and rushes the entire first half of the story. MORE accurate, sure, even though it half-asses most of what it adapts. The fan darling scenes got special treatment, but the more important, philosophical, introspective story moments get rushed through so they could get back to the action.

When Brotherhood was announced, I expected a series that would approach the material of the manga with the same flair, pacing, philosophy, and stylistic action that the first anime had. That show still has some of the best fight scenes in anime. Some of the best character designs. Some of the best shading. Some of the best background art. Some of the best choreography. Some of the best facial animation. Some of the best line art and frame-by-frame consistency.

I sure as shit didn't get that in Brotherhood. I had to wait through rushed story arcs. I had to watch characters faces morph into weird shapes frame by frame and weird expressions where their eyes didn't stay parallel and their pupils were sometimes wonky or too small or too big. I had to look at fucking backgrounds that look like they were drawn with crayon and run through a million Photoshop filters. I got to look forward to my favorite moments in the manga either get cut or reduced to single episodes.

Three anime classics:

1. Maison Ikkoku - Can't believe no one mentioned this. It's the greatest thing Rumiko Takahashi ever did, and the greatest TV romantic dramedy ever. The manga is equally as good as Miyazaki's Nausicaa. Nothing can top this. Godai's pain hits home.

2. Urusei Yatsura Movie 2: Beautiful Dreamer - the movie that really defined Mamoru Oshii's style (not Patlabor or Ghost in the Shell).

3. Kimagure Orange Road - Contains the iconic tsundere in Madoka Ayukawa, the iconic indecisive male lead in Kyosuke Kasuga, and the iconic annoying girl in Hikaru. There's magic here. Also, the movie "I Want to Return to that Day" blows away every hint of its classic comedy in favor of a fairly stunning resolution (bonus timeless soundtrack included).

A few other recs: First season of Ranma 1/2 (only part of it which can truly be called a classic), Escaflowne, Touch (biggest work of Mitsuru Adachi, who is criminally underrated in America, though I prefer Rough, his swimming manga).

This is wrong, LOGH is actually one of the best things to have ever been shown on television.

Well, it's not right enough at least.

Was it even shown on TV? I don't think it was. It was sold on tapes and then Laserdiscs.

But yeah, Legend of the Galactic Heroes is insanely good.

It's an OVA series, but some OVAs are also shown on TV, eventually (and this one was).

YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN

You people

My good people

Spread the word of LOGH

I haven't seen a lot of anime, but I loved Jungle wa Itsumo Hale nochi Guu and it's certifiably insane humor. Look it up!

does anyone here subscribe to funimation's site? is it worth it? any other anime-oreinted streaming services to recommend instead? I feel like netflix's selection just keeps getting smaller and smaller.

Not enough people are recommending Hajime no Ippo. If I was home, I would post the gif of Ippo punching his boner.

It's a shame because it's one of my favorite animes. It has spirit, humor, and great character development. Here's some god tier animation from the most recent episode:

There's not enough manly anime out there. The only recent one being JoJo. If you want to get motivated while working out, this anime is for you.

Crunchyroll is probably the most popular streaming website.

Hulu has most of Funimation's stuff, as well as a lot of other stuff. Check there.

Depends on what you're in to. I'd personally recommend:

Shows:
Gankutsuou
Honey & Clover
Last Exile
Ergo Proxy
Monster
Haibane renmei
FMA: Brotherhood
Elfen Lied
Jigoku Shoujo
Chobits
Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien
NHK ni Youkoso!

Movies:
Perfect Blue
Summer Wars
Samurai X: trust and betrayal (OVA)

Just some great shows and movies on top of my head

I would recommend When They Cry. The story is really great, and how crazy all the characters get is amazing.

Personally, I think if you get past the first 4 episodes. There's no turning back, your probably going to finish it.

Watch basilisk anime (its has one of those titles where you have to put anime when searching on google), recently watched it and was amazing.

Honestly its a Japanese version of a famous tragedy (don't wan't to say what tragedy sort of a spoiler) . It also takes place in the late 16th century, so if you like the whole samurai/ninja thing this is for you.

I just finished watching SEED and I'm confident NOTHING will top it! I can't see 00, G, or Unicorn beating this show! It was fucking mindblowingly AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!

G tops SEED for me easily. The battles...the emotion...it has everything you could want in an anime all wrapped in a neat 49 episode package!

Finished G-Gundam. One word.....PHENOMENAL

Holy Shit what a show!

Started watching Kaiji , wow...just wow...I had no idea it was so addicting and clever.

I've only watched 9 episodes but if it keeps it up like this its easily in my top 10.

For the love of god, STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM Guilty Crown. It's one of the worst things I've ever seen.
And watch Full Metal Alchemist Shinsetsu, Kill la Kill, Gurren Lagan, Black Lagoon, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Psycho Pass, Gundam 00 (Best Gundam IMHO)

big edit: GREAT TEACHER ONIZUKA! Good laughs.

Which was the Gundam with the "SHINING FINGER" attack? G Gundam? Or Gundam Seed? It rolled on Toonami with DB, DBZ, and Yu Yu Hakusho.
