FMA was made before the manga ended so there's filler episodes and the story line diverges a good bit from that in the manga.
FMA;B is a retelling of the story while staying a lot more close to what happened in the manga. Think of it as a more accurate remake.
Accurate, my ass. It reduces the two most important manga arcs to two episodes, filling in the blanks in ONE of them in OVAs, removes other important scenes, and rushes the entire first half of the story. MORE accurate, sure, even though it half-asses most of what it adapts. The fan darling scenes got special treatment, but the more important, philosophical, introspective story moments get rushed through so they could get back to the action.
When Brotherhood was announced, I expected a series that would approach the material of the manga with the same flair, pacing, philosophy, and stylistic action that the first anime had. That show still has some of the best fight scenes in anime. Some of the best character designs. Some of the best shading. Some of the best background art. Some of the best choreography. Some of the best facial animation. Some of the best line art and frame-by-frame consistency.
I sure as shit didn't get that in Brotherhood. I had to wait through rushed story arcs. I had to watch characters faces morph into weird shapes frame by frame and weird expressions where their eyes didn't stay parallel and their pupils were sometimes wonky or too small or too big. I had to look at fucking backgrounds that look like they were drawn with crayon and run through a million Photoshop filters. I got to look forward to my favorite moments in the manga either get cut or reduced to single episodes.
