How can Microsoft still justify $499?

Like I said. See Wii and Wii U. That naming made an impact, but how much of an impact are you thinking here?

These are casuals we're talking about here. Xbox One could do better being marketed as the everything console and families might eat that shit up, but so was the PS3 was sort of marketed as an everything console as well (actually the marketing sucked and was confusing in the early days lol).

This is what is key to what makes a successful console launch; MArketing. As I said before; if Nintendo had marketed the Wii-U as the Wii 2, it would've done better because the ;casuals' would've seen the console as a direct sequel than some confusing continuation/add-on.

OP why

I think people underestimate the amount of people who are comfortable in their Xbox Live ecosystem. They have their subscription, achievements and their friend list carry over to the new console along with a few franchises. These are the core gamers Xbox are wanting to keep and are focused on. I don't think they're too concerned about losing them.

But they also want to expand to new markets so they're marketing the Kinect and the multimedia stuff as a futuristic piece of technology.

It remains to be seen how this will work. I think it will still sell pretty decently. But who knows. Either people are buying it for Kinect or they're buying it with Kinect. Microsoft win either way. Presuming people buy it obviously.

How many people do you think buy a iphone for $500?

I'm sure 99% of the people out there get their phone for $199 with a 2yrs contract.

More had the iPad in mind, which, for the WiFi models at least, obviously doesn't have a similar sort of carrier contract split.

And, with that 2-year contract, they're paying out the nose for an iPhone anyway. Which is kind of like Microsoft charging for XBox Live.
And Microsoft tried a similar sort of "subsidized console with subscription contract agreement" with the XBox 360 as well anyway, wouldn't surprise me to see them do it eventually with the XBox One also.

Because that's pretty much all they sell.
.

No it isn't. 720p tvs aren't that rare at stores.
Plenty of times I've found what i thought was a great deal on a tv until I noticed that the specs said 720p. Also go ahead and look at a stores online site and you will find plenty of tvs that are 720p

Well it's not like Sony isn't going to not do anything.

I can't see the Xbox One outselling the PS4 worldwide or in the US. It might be close though. I'm actually very interested in what happens going forward.

720p vs 1080p isn't the only thing that matters...

Keep in mind an xbox 360 with kinect still costs $300. Microsoft can easily justify a system that is new (not 8 years old) and an updated kinect for $500.

Honestly I don't think they're making much profit on the system. Try to price out a comparable PC even without the kinect.

This thread brings up a thought that I had earlier.

For those of you who are "Sony guys" and "PC guys" (generalizations, I know) what do you think about those of us who are just getting the Xbox One? Do you think that we are stupid or dumb? Do you pity us? Do you mock and laugh at us? Do you not care? This is a completely serious question and the only reason I ask is just for pure curiosity's sake and for the possibility of some lulz.

I think it's worth it.

They have Forza at launch, Titanfall coming up, and then Halo after that. An awesome controller with rumble triggers, and Kinect as an added bonus for navigating the system with gesture and voice controls. The OS seems a whole lot better to use from what I have seen and I trust MS a lot more for fluid, intuitive system navigation than Sony, especially after their new PSN update.

To me there are more important things than console power and slight visual differences. I feel like MS will deliver the better overall experience much like they have done this generation.

The only thing that irks me is the whole AA batteries thing. The controllers ought to have integrated rechargeable batteries from the get go. That and the ads in the background, although I will have to wait til launch before I decide how annoying they are.

Please stop using common sense during these hyperbolic times. More "omg it's all over" please.

But masses will care A LOT about the price.

There is simply nothing Microsoft has to justify that price.

Sony does games, Microsoft does games. Sony does streaming services, Microsoft does streaming services. Microsoft has Kinect, Sony doesn't. Microsoft has the TV stuff with enhanced sports viewing, Sony doesn't.

That's what the average consumer sees. Or will see, rather.

I think you're crazy to be giving them a ton of money after they virtually cut support on 360 4 years ago but ultimately I don't care, it's not my money being risked.

I'm more confused by you than anything.
Edit-I mean gafers who are only buying the xbox one. I have a real life friend who has said he'll probably only buy an xbox one, but he doesn't play that many videogames. He said he only plays Forza and Call of Duty, so it makes sense to only get the xbox one

Not at all... if I was a fan of Halo, Forza Gears and any other Microsoft exclusive, I'd be happy with my purchase. Titanfall looks and plays amazing. It's all about the content. Those are titles that you will only see on that console.

Thats what they said about the Wii U. And they were coming off a more successful console/strategy.

Umm... not sure how that relates. Wii U does 1080p already for a few games. I think the more apt comparison would be to Wii not being HD.

Wii U's problem is a lack of games and the terrible design decision of only 1 person being able to use the main type of controller. I own a Wii U and enjoy it but damn are they freaking stupid for only allowing 1 gamepad (yes I know it would be super expensive). If you're going for a gimmick, make sure everyone can use it, not just 1 person.

Edit: The fact that it's underpowered would make a difference later but against 360/PS3 the last year, I don't think so. It's powerful enough to play basically all their competitor's games, publishers are just wary of it because of its sales.

I don't care about the exclusive franchises that the Xbox has and considering the shit show that was the last 2 years of the 360 I won't be returning immediately. If their exclusives float your boat have at it mang ;-)

Kinect. But also Its highly rumored that Microsoft isn't taking a hit on the console price whereas Sony is taking a $150 Hit on each one sold from what we have heard.

I just checked on amazon how much all this stuff would cost If I was getting Xbone at launch.

Xbone : $499
Extra controller : $60
1 year Xbox Live : $60
2 games: $120
play and charge kit : $25
Tax 6%
Total: $809.84

I could build a medium spec PC which could run every game at 1080p and still have cash left over for that price.

Oh Please

PS4 : $399
Extra controller : $60
1 year Plus : $50
2 games: $120
PS Camera: $60
Tax 6%

Total : $730.34

That's only a $79.50 difference maybe I'm rich but that's not the HUGE price difference some make it out to be.

I just wonder why you're buying an xbox one instead of sticking with a 360. I am interested in an xbox one for forza 5 and crimson dragon, but no chance in hell I would pay $500 for it.

I pity all of them but you!

jk, it's their choice, just not one that I would make. There are other factors at play for different people. It's always subjective.

Not to mention you can just throw Rechargeable Batteries inside of the Xbox One Controller instead of getting the Charge Pack. Then you can charge the batteries by just plugging the controller in. So really its around $50 If your being smart. But also, if your coming to the One from the 360 (this also works for the PS3 to the PS4) you will likely already have a Plus or Gold Account so its cost wont factor in until that runs out.

I know Microsoft has some hardcore fans, but the casuals will see that there is a $100 price discrepancy between both consoles with most of the same games and they will even look very similar. I am just wondering if gamers will think Kinect for an extra $100 is worth it when both consoles are relatively identical in most cases.

Both of them are expensive. The $106 difference between the two doesn't really mean much in the grand scheme of things. If you're looking for feature parity, it's only a $42.40 difference.

Again, that's like two hours of work for the target audience of both consoles.

Services (Xbox Fitness etc.), Xbox Live (Dedicated Servers), Kinect. Before I started gaming on the PC I didn't care what resolution was, and a for lot of casual players this is still the case. And exclusive games of course.

Yep. Those threads are 50 plus pages long for something no one realistically cares about, let alone genuinely affects them.

Not sure if that's sarcasm but his original point is correct. Those threads are 50 pages long for the purpose of console wars among hardcore gamers. The casuals will care much less.

Serious answer: they have to sell it based on the merits of kinect. Unfortunately their message lately is that 'you don't have to use it' Not a good start. With Kinect MS either needs to use it or loose it. Either completely Wow us with amazing kinect games and functionality, or remove it from the box. There's no going halfway with it when its putting you pricepoint $100 above the competition.

I have both preordered, and I have to admit that I'm most excited for the Xbox One. And not for any particular game, but for Xbox Fitness. I would never have guessed that in a million years lol
