Pacific Rim |OT| Apocalypse Never

Well, personally I love the movie greatly. It was the most fun I had in the theaters all year, the most enjoyable movie I'd seen since Avengers. Of course then Gravity came along, lol. Pacific Rim never tries to be anything other than a monster movie with giant robots. It's cliche, it's cheesy, it's straightforward, and it's rather simple, but it executes all of it's plot points and details so perfectly that it works incredibly well for me, despite the acting and cheese. In fact, they make it better IMHO. Not better in a Gone With the Wind kind of way, but better in a Predator or True Lies kind of way.

I love the movie, and I'm glad none of you naysayers can have any effect on me now because I own the blu-ray damnit and I can watch it whenever and however many times I want to! Enjoy your opinion, and I'll enjoy my giant robots fighting giant monsters movie. :D

Next time you watch it, take notice of how many scenes there are where people randomly yell at each other or through an intercom for no reason whatsoever.

There are several scenes where pilots are yelling at each other even though there's no reason to raise their voices. It's so silly it always makes me chuckle.

Also an extreme nitpick, but this one always bothers me as well:

So out of place, haha.

idk about spoiler tagging rules in movie threads, so I'll just spoil everything ^^
I have seen that explanation before and I have to call bullshit on this
1. they don't exactly seem all to concerned about blood spilling when they ripped the tongue out of that flying one, or at any other blood spiling part of the fight
2. damage with quick kill and more blood vs prolonged battle that destroys half the city
I'm thinking the cost/benefit of that one goes to the quick kill one
3. the chinese one had saw blades as basically primary weapons (although with none of the advantages a sword would give, stabbing and cutting instead of just cutting plus longer reach) so no one seemed that concerned about the blood fall out if they said okay to that

so yeah, given how effective swords and other bladed weapons proved against the monsters compared to just punching it I really fail to see the reason they didn't start using those sooner and more of them

overall fun movie ^^

Sorry I didn't respond to this before. Totally forgot to check, lol.

1. More fighting, less time to think, lol.

2 is probably that the stuff does more damage to the environment than it costs to rebuild the city, so they pick the one that's easier to deal with.

Only 3 is the issue. Kinda silly of a weapon to have.

Just because Del Toro put thought into making his decisions does not automatically make them good decisions. You can put as much thought into directorial decisions as you want, if you make the wrong choices you still end up with a shit movie. I love a well made action movie, but you still need to have believable characters who act like real human beings. The two scientists were painfully bad (said as a big fan of Charlie day on its always sunny). The biggest problem was that there was no tension because there was no real villain. Monsters showing up randomly and us just being told that they are bigger than the last one is not a compelling antagonist. We are told their plan through the scientists, we are not shown their plan by a master story teller. Almost every line in the movie was exposition. Also, if you have a sword that cuts through the bad guy like butter, why would you ever punch him repeatedly in the face?

The point is, that unlike other movie makers who just throw shit at the screen for dollars, Del Toro actually put in the effort and love into creating the kind of tone and atmosphere that he was going for. Whether or not the viewer likes it or not is up to his or her own subjective tastes and interpretation.

The two scientists are the comic relief, with "comic" being taken nearly literally. That kind of banter is very exaggerated on purpose, and comic/manga/anime-esque to fit in with the tone of the movie. Sure, it's corny, but at least they have an arc, character building, and their own hero moments, unlike other useless comic relief characters in other movies.

The antagonist element was pretty much the same as in Independence Day. Did you have a problem with that?

There's no problem with a little exposition. It helps to keep the viewer informed and move the plot along. I didn't feel it was too much. There was a lot of "showing" going on too. Lots of visual details in the color and set direction which reflected the characters and their relationships. Lots of background details among the secondary characters all the time to show how integrated they are into the world, etc.

i honestly think that GDT is the fucking best director who shoots at night, he captures nighttime like no other, always vibrant and atmospheric.

Some neat spectacle in this, but I can't help but walk away thinking that spending $200 million to effectively make a live-action anime was kind of a raw deal. Considering that if they had put a fraction of that budget into producing an actual anime series around the concept, they could have much more material that worked to much better effect.

Kinda like how WB will throw gobs and gobs of money at one half-baked Justice League movie, when that money could have funded a dozen seasons of excellent Justice League cartoons.

I'll never understand comments like this. From my understanding the special effects were incredibly expensive and hadn't been done to before. But people feel they can't see where the money went. It just sounds obnoxious as it comes across like you or others could do better on your laptop in the corner of your basement somewhere. I really hope that after watching this movie that people realize that the jagers and kaiju (aka the special effects) were the "main stars" here. Not the human actors.

Complaints about it being a live action anime are valid, it's just a matter of if you want that or not.

I did, so I loved the movie, but I can understand how people who don't have that bit of nostalgia wouldn't like it.

An anime or anime inspired series would be great as well.

first time i saw the trailer i thought. well looks stupid and most likely will flop. i watched it with very low expectations and as it turns out this movie is my favorite movie of the year so far. i really hope they'll make a sequel. which might happen thanks to china. wohoooo.

Loved the film and laughed my ass off watching that. Perfect :)

I've watched the film a couple of times now and I can't point to the obvious place in the film where I can say "that's the reason they didn't use the sword before now".

I assume it's because it is a feature that Mako added during the reconstruction of gypsy danger. Why they didn't use it earlier in that fight could be a number of reason. Maybe it's to prevent spilling blood, or maybe it's just because Mako was a rookie and forgot until it was the only option left.

Sooooo any news so far from the sales? We getting a sequel? I'm already excited thinking of where they will take it. I am hoping that they show the process of becoming a pilot and all the mental breakdowns like understanding that if given the chance you will take your life without a second thought.

For the week that ended on October 20th, Warner Home Entertainment's Pacific Rim scored the top sales figures on the Blu-ray-only chart. Director Guillermo Del Toro's sci-fi epic struggled to find mainstream success with domestic audiences this summer; the film, which had an estimated production budget of over $190 million, grossed only $101 million stateside (though, it must be noted, the film performed much stronger in international markets, where it made over $305 million) and garnered a Metacritic score of 64%.

Pacific Rim had an especially strong Blu-ray showing, as 60% of its sales came from the HD format.

Question about getting it off iTunes:
Can I only play the movie using Quicktime and/or iTunes or can I use any other media player on PC?

Showed it to my dad: thumbs up

Showed it to my sis and her husband: thumbs up. They're even gonna buy it now.

Even people who don't give a fuck about mechs and giant monsters enjoyed it. :)

I watched it again the other night after buying it and something bothered me. What is Europe doing the entire time the Pacific Rim is being attacked?

No it was not fun. If I actually cared for the characters and there was a memorable story to it, it might have got me interested. I can go into a movie and have an imagination and really have fun with it, but when a movie requires me to completely shut off my brain, and watch robots and monsters smack the shit out of eachother the entire movie, well that's not fun and very forgetable...Like I said, a waste of my money.

I'm sorry but this movie is anything but forgettable. Sure it's dumb but it has some of the most striking visual moments ever.

Britain and some other Euro countries sent some top fighter pilots to retrain as Jaeger pilots, I think Germany also invented the Jaeger's 'muscle strand' tech. There's probably other stuff but that's all I can remember off the top of my head.

Just saw it. Pretty cool film but I was disappointed a bit with the special effects. A lot of it was awesome but sometimes I'd find something off about them like it was obvious the actors were behind a green screen. I'm sure people will disagree with me here lol

if you are talking about cockipit shots, that whole cockpit was acutally a set built to shoot those scenes.

This blu-ray is perfect. Just the right amount of extras and a commentary.

God this movie looks so good, even on just a basic 42" plasma, it's an eye popper.

Re-watched this movie yesterday with a friend. It's still a pretty awesome action movie BUT i still hate this piece of shit worthless actor:

This film really didn't need that comical relief character. Uuugh..

Would be fine for comic relief if he was actually funny.

I thought Charlie Day was fine.. his companion played by Burn Gorman really made me cringe though.

Fuck, I wish Guiellermo did commentary for every movie I watched. He does it better than anyone. No one does it as good as he does. NO ONE.

I was going to comment on this a little while ago and then forgot, because the movie was rather forgettable.

Charlie Day does not belong in anything other than comedy movies. It is impossible to even consider him a fully actualized human being let alone seriously.

There is zero chemistry between every single person in this movie. It's just a bunch of personas clashing against each other from a very very wide range of talent, from awful to great.

I know this is an unpopular opinion, and somedays I really wish I wasn't so full of them on so many subjects, but I just don't think del Toro is that great of a director or writer.

I know he was at some point set to direct the Hobbit trilogy, and I think he still had a hand in the screenplay which might explain why the first act of that trilogy seemed to struggle so much with character chemistry as well, when the LOTR trilogy was overflowing with camaraderie, as one would expect from the Hobbit.

The action was ok, the special effects were decent, and it was fun enough to watch. I'd be down for a sequel just for some more mindless entertainment, but overall it was just "ok". Which I guess is fine.

Got my Striker Eureka in the mail today. The articulation is ages better than Series 1. Will attempt to pick up the rest of series 2 when I head to the states in December.

Finally have the 3D bluray, man that 3D is amazing! Definity the disc to own if you want to show people how good 3dtv can get!

Also great to see the introduction scene of Mako without english overdubs as it was with the theatre version. That scene makes so much more sense now, excellent. Looking forward to the commentary and digging in to the extras.

Yeah he was one of the worst parts of the movie for me.

I really enjoyed the movie, just wish it didn't include some of the cheesy things like that guy.

I liked Charlie Day. He made me laugh. The other scientist was beyond cartoony. There should've been more Day and Perlman instead. Didn't need that other scientist.

I dunno, the way he says "Newton made a X out of GARBAGE and drifted with the kaiju brain" gets me every time. Plus that awkward fistbump

I liked the scientists. I thought of it was an acknowledgement that nerds can save the world too - and that dude bro jock mech pilots would be fucked without us ;)
