They're supposed to be, but not all of them are strictly stronger than their non-mega forms because they have to give up their hold item for their upgraded ability/stats. Scizor will almost never want to use his mega evolution on a direct offense set because Life Orb gives more damage than a mega evolution would, but has some use in bulky sets because of the added defenses.

Otoh you have things like Mawile and Pinsir who won't ever be seen without their mega evolutions.

They don't supersede the original form entirely, and it's mostly going to come down to team dynamics.
 
I still have 2 more Adamant 31 / 31 / 31 / x / x / 31 Shroomish up for trade.

Looking for these pokemon with at least 4 perfect IVs:

Prankster Klefki (Impish/Bold)
Noibat (Modest/Timid)
Meditite (Jolly)

Edit: They are Poison Heal.
 
Thanks to Ramyeon, I have an amazing Mawile. I'm conflicted as to what EV spread and moves to give it, though. Smogon hasn't arrived at any definitive "best set."

My main concern is Mega Mawile's base 50 Speed. I suspect that a Huge Power-boosted Sucker Punch (a priority move with 80BP and 100% accuracy) could still OHKO many 'mons and 2HKO many others, without the need for a Swords Dance setup. Aegislash and Mega Gengar would be especially hard hit by Huge Power Sucker Punch.

I'm currently thinking Power-Up Punch might be preferable to Swords Dance -- the move has weak base power (40BP) but raises Attack by one, making it like a weaker Swords Dance that does damage as it sets up. Helpful in the event of Encore, and also could help with bulky Steel-types like Heatran and Ferrothorn. Fails against Ghost-types, of course. Basically, I wonder how much Mega Mawile could get by without Swords Dance. Again, going second for a setup move makes me nervous, which is why I wonder if base 105 Attack + Huge Power would be enough.

Then Play Rough for STAB, and Stone Edge for additional coverage, including most Fire-types, to which Mega Mawile is vulnerable. I'm passing up Iron Head for extra coverage in Fighting and Rock and because Play Rough can hit fellow Fairy-types for neutral damage.

But then there's the question of the EVs. Sink it all into HP and Attack, or bolster Defense?

I'm thinking:

Nature: Adamant
Ability: Intimidate -> Huge Power
Item: Mega Stone
252 HP/120 Attack/136 Defense

Sucker Punch
Power-Up Punch
Stone Edge
Play Rough

But part of me is tempted to invest a full 252 in Attack, hoping that neutral nature base 125 Defense can take a hit if I use a move other than Sucker Punch and have to go second. Special Defense is base 95, if you're wondering.

Any suggestions?

Yeah, I was talking with a friend about it and he was like, "I'm sticking Thunderbolt on all of my Pokemon." lol. Ah well, I'm not going to be super serious about it so I don't mind not picking a more optimal team.

Breeding a female Togepi and then evolving it so I can breed it with a male Plusle with Nasty Plot might drive me insane

EDIT ... and my second Togepi is female. Maybe there is a God after all

And here I was ridiculing those that have done the same. First time I've done this in close to a decade of breeding...

Can anyone help me out?

Go to the Reflection Cave and farm them from Roggenrola using Thief.

You can get Everstones from Roggenrolas, I think. Just stick Thief on a Pokemon and farm away.

Mega-Mawile's Attack can get really high, so it's more of a question about how much EVs you need to put into to KO what you want.
 
My Mawile if anyone is interested:

Mawile @ Mawiilite
Intimidate -> Huge Power
Adamant (252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD)
- Rough Play
- Iron Head
- Swords Dance
- Sucker Punch
 
I know a guy that is constantly freaking out about how Mega Mawile could be bad.

Never mind the fact that it has one of the best defensive typings in the game if not the best, priority to patch up its Speed and it has around 260 base Attack.
 
For Everstone Roggenrola hunting, it works better if you stuff a Pokemon with CompoundEyes ability in your first slot (even if it's dead), as it raises the chance of finding Pokemon holding stuff. The one that uses Thief could preferrably have Frisk, as well, I guess, so you don't waste PP on stuff that holds nothing.

And man, I've been here trying my hand at building a team for "competitive" -- with friends, but they're into it as well -- battling, but can't seem to find one to replace what would have been Keldeo's place. Wanted to use Lucario as a sweeper, immediately went for Tyranitar as a partner, but the water one is giving me a headache. Keldeo would've been perfect, but, alas... Any ideas?

This would've been so much cooler if I had Dragonair evolve into a Dragonite. This was my third dratini to dragonite evo process, since I couldn't check EVs since I hadn't beat the game yet.

I literally only used Mamoswine. He put errybody down.

Hrm. I've got a Male Fennekin with 31IVs in HP, Def, and SP Atk. The only thing I'm worried about Speed, but I'm hoping to check to see if it has at least an okay Speed, since he is at least Timid and has Magician.
Would anyone be willing to Wifi Battle me real quick so I can check him out?
 
Finally finished the game. Here's some initial impressions:

Liked:

-Simplicity of the story. Seems like they were really going back to their roots with this one. Gave me a Gen 1 vibe. Straightforward and to the point, that's how I like my stories in Pokemon. Although I think Black and White did a good job with their "deep" story, I definitely prefer this method of story telling.

-Pacing. Unlike the awfulness that was B2/W2, XY had some pretty great pacing, dialogue was quick and snappy, as were the battles. Although I think they could have cut out all of those other friend characters besides the main rival... happy to see improvements.

Also, you can run from the start. Then you get roller skates like 2 seconds later. Amazing. So damn fast! The bike is ridiculously fast too. Love it.

-Pokemon models and overall presentation. I didn't know how to feel when I found out the sprites were gone, but after playing the game, I think they totally nailed that feel with the new 3D models for the Pokemon. They look great, and the spirit of the old presentation is still there. Very well done.

-Mega Evolutions. Overall, I like the designs of the Mega Pokemon. Far better than some of the awful looking evolutions to gen 1 Pokemon we got in Gen 4... ugh.

Disliked:

-Difficulty. The game is way too easy, unfortunately. I died maybe twice, and never used items. It doesn't seem like they didn't balance the game around the new exp share (which is way too broken) and mega evolutions. I guess I can force myself to not use them if I wanted a greater difficulty, but that's kind of a shitty solution.

-The new Pokemon, and how often they appear. Unlike in Black and White, we have old Pokemon galore in this game. I saw far more old Pokemon than new Pokemon during my playthrough of the game. As a result, the only new Pokemon in my party was my starter. I feel like they could have struck a better balance between new/old Pokemon in the wild, and in trainer parties.

Furthermore, from what I've seen, the designs aren't that great. Nothing from this gen has really jumped out at me, unlike gen 5 which I thought was surprisingly awesome after the disappointing gens 3 and 4.

-HMs are still a thing. I swear I must have surfed like 3 times and used strength once to beat the game. Just fucking get rid of them already, or give them the same characteristics as TMs. It's ridiculous at this point.

-The giant town. Like in Black/White, it's cool in theory, but shitty and unfun in execution. The camera gets all weird and... it's just too big.

I could nit pick a bit more, but overall I really enjoyed the game. Definitely a must own for the 3DS. I still need to jump into the post game stuff, and it's still SUPER early, but if I had to rank gens:

GSC>RBY>BW>XY>RSE>DPPT>B2W2

Good stuff. Pokemon Z has a lot of potential.

Crits in general got nerfed, however.
Not to mention that if your going up against something like a chesnaught or aegislash, it can be somewhat hard to read, and if they're just using a flat-out stall pokemon sucker punch is essentially useless.

Of course, you can double up with Sucker Punch + another STAB dark if you feel so inclined and don't mind reducing your coverage a little.
 
Man, I'm gonna attempt to go through ingame with a whole dragon team. Early game is going to be a pain (thank god for dragon rage at early levels) and then midgame will probably be worse since most of the later gen dragons don't evolve until level 40.

Be jealous though Lance...be jealous.
