Wii Sports U - Iwata Ask

Iwata was really getting into it near the end of the second video. I bet he's the one who's been padding Reggie's Activity Log.

Nintendo is starting to partner with Namco a lot recently. I hope it works out well for them. Maybe we can get some Tales games too with that?...

This is really innovative. Love the "spot pass" auto downloading. I wish they had that as an option for all game demos honestly. If I could have demos / small games auto-download and install, I'd try so many more titles and would check more often to see what was available on the store. It would be a lot better for FTP titles too.

I've been anticipating the Golf and Baseball WiiU versions since their unveiling two E3s ago. Really excited to finally play them (hopefully early next year)!

By the way, 1.3 GB sounds astonishingly high for just Tennis + Bowling and considering the graphics aren't really… elaborated. What the hell did they put in the package?

This sounds great. I love the idea of the pitcher in the Gamepad, it may sound obvious but it's great that way because only the pitcher sees what he's doing, and you can't do that with other controllers!

Aim for the court, Iwata.

Disappointed that this doesn't won't have the games from Resort. I'd also really like if this was as good for single player as Nintendo Land, but I'm pretty sure that won't happen.

neogaf froze on me double posts

it is DLC they can add to it forever it is called CLUB

I didn't even know there was a Wii Sports U.

Wii Sports Resort is one of my favorite games from this gen. Is this game anything like it? What can I expect?

They explained why this is not Wii Sports U so you would be right that game does not exist yet

"We were concerned that Miiverse would become a cruel place."

As soon as competitive online games become more common I'm afraid of this too. Ah well, I'm excited anyway about some online Wii Sports.

No other company would care about this kinda surprised how much they are doing to try to avoid this

The tennis looks really fun, leave it to Nintendo to offer simple and clean experiences :)

I was surprised the graphics weren't better considering some stuff we've seen on the system, I know its not a technical showcase but... Maybe I should see it first hand natively, definitely getting a Wii U sometime in the next 6-8 months.

Assholes online can irreparably damage your brand, especially with parents whose children are "harmed" by being exposed to adult situations. You also have gamers who aren't accustomed to online competition, and might be repulsed at being called genital euphemisms during their game of Wii Tennis.

The club thing sounds pretty cool.

This might seem like a silly question, but is it only local co-op online? Or can you and a friend that's somewhere else team up against other people?

I guess we're not getting the Resort sports, like Swordfighting and Archery?

They said 5, so ...

Boxing
Bowling
Golf
Tennis
Baseball

And that's it? $10 each, $50 total. It's tempting, but I was hoping for some other sports. I'll probably still get it. I would rather have a physical copy, but their delivery method is innovative.

We can only hope that we'll get the Resort sports down the road.

Instead of being a regular packaged game, Wii Sports Club will be available as download software

Oh well maybe I'll...

either via a Day Pass ($1.99) which allows you to play all the available sports as much as you want for 24 hours, or a Club Pass ($9.99), which you have the option to be able to play a particular sport as long as you want.

Pass. :(

What the fuuuuuuuck. I wanted my next gen Wii Sports, but not like this...Sure it's an innovative way to get money, but for me, it just reeks EA. >:(

Welp, it's not like I'm wishing for this to happen, but if it bombs hard enough maybe it'll go physical....aaaah goddamn that's frustrating.

I dunno, it seems like it would end up being better for the customer in the long run. Instead of buying a $50 disk and never playing boxing/baseball, or whatever game(s) you might not enjoy, you can pick up each individual sport that tickles your fancy.

Yeah for now the only one I'm definitely getting is Tennis. I'm glad they're splitting them up, as I don't have much interest in Baseball and Golf, especially. Bowling I'm not sure about. Might get Boxing.

Ugh... whoever the hell thinks that golf set-up is good needs to be fired immediately. Talk about a pointless gimmick.

That's what I thought, but then again it seemed to impress a lot of people at E3. It does convey a certain "cool" factor, gimmick or not. "Immersion" and all that.

Pointless gimmick? It gives you an actual target to swing at. It actually adds another layer of depth. Before you just had to swing, now you have to aim for the ball too. That's the opposite of pointless.

Do you think it is just a video feed or something? It sounds like you actually use it to help play the game. Like it's the second half of the control scheme. That doesn't seem pointless to me.

Yeah, it uses the IR sensor on the gamepad to act as the target for the ball. It's actually part of the control scheme.

Awesome news all around.

Wii Sports Club automatically installed was exactly what Nintendo needed to do. This should ensure there will be a lot of people online.

And the Golf is also what I hoped it to be.

IIRC, Nintendo tried to buy out Bandai at one point, but the gubment wouldn't let them so they settled with some shares into the company (around 3%). After the merger with Namco, it was reduced to 1.73%

Technically...

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/nintendos-bandai-bid-back-in-the-spotlight

A faction on Bandai's board blamed their president (son of the company founder) for Bandai's poor performance. Bandai's bank was one member of that upset faction, and they also worked as Nintendo's bank.

They asked Yamauchi to buy 2.7% of Bandai (which was a big deal, because Bandai shares are spread out really thin), that way Yamauchi would get a seat on Bandai's board. Then they could ask their president to step down, and ask Yamauchi to step up and lead them.

Bandai's president refused to step down, and argued that aligning themselves with Nintendo was a bad idea, so Yamauchi didn't do anything. He wasn't there to fight any battles, he was there because they asked him to come. If they don't want him, he has better things to do with his time.

Then Bandai's president arranged the merger with Namco.
