Xboxone Resolutiongate (Eurogamer)

I actually have no problem with Aaron tweet. He responded to a tweet that didn't mention native. I also respected Aaron when the first one ever posted ryse was 900p , which he corrected when earlier stated as 1080p. But, at least he didn't lie.

What is a lie

Albert is a lie with his number crunching and telling us we are wrong if we expected any difference

I don't mind Aaron spin. He does on his own twitter . But at least he is not a straight up liar like other two.

the only part of those tweets that's a lie is the full HD experience part. Everything else is fact.

MS just needs to licsense 'Blast Processing' from SEGA. Go ahead, disprove the XBone doesn't have Blast Processing. Maybe they can get a rabbi to make all the XBones Kosher too while they are at it, maybe a tie in with Hebrew National Hotdogs.

I understand this whole situation is difficult. I am trying as best I can to comprehend all sides here, and respect their true goals. But mistakes have been made. Avoidable mistakes. And I don't know why this has to continue to be the case. You guys can fix this in time, we just need transparency.

This. Your posts are always spot on mate.

Not at all surprised by Giant Bomb's stance. They were giving MS the benefit of doubt to the run up of E3, during it and even after. What was the nail in the coffin was them trying to act like the internet was over reacting to the DRM shit.

Yeah, I can't really look at GB the same after that. Still enjoy their podcast though.

This situation is so weird to me because when Penello first got a GAF account I thought it was great based on hearing him before on the Major Nelson podcast. Very knowledgeable, affable and entertaining. I assumed he would steer clear of very controversial topics where there were no definitive answers an employee of MS could give, but would still be able to address certain things and be a positive force here.

When he first started acting like Arthur Gies on steroids I was truly shocked.

I knew it was only a matter of time before things blew up in his face from the moment I saw his first post here. Bish clarified it before, he is most definitely PR in the strictest sense of the word, and given MS's actions things couldn't have turned out well for him. I'm sure he's a decent bloke when he's not on duty.

If Penello's posts (or any other gaming company representative or employee) end up being flat out miss-information (looks like it so far) that could've turned undecided future buyers into buying an Xbox One without knowing the system wouldn't perform like they were led to believe, is that grounds for a ban?

Yes it is IIRC.

I once bought Ikari Warriors for NES out of a catalog because the cover looked cool. Dark days man, dark days.

I've bought good games and bad games from cover judging. No regrets! Helps that my taste usually gravitates to Eastern style aesthetics.

I remember when my dad wanted to buy me a Playstation. Told him to stuff it, I had a megadrive and I wanted a Sega Saturn, which he ended up buying.

Sometimes being ignorant isn't the greatest thing in the world.

LOL. I feel fortunate to have grown up without the concept of a console war ever entering my head, my cousin had Sega systems and I had Ninty systems (and later both of us had PS and Xboxes). We'd bring them over to each others' houses and have co-op sessions on Biohazard or versus each other on SFII or that Power Rangers fighting game.

What's this about dangling pieces?

Aaron downplayed the difference, tried to spin it while he could have simply ignored it.

He spin on his own twitter by stating a fact. I have no problem with that. If he stated both games are same graphically on ps4/xb1 , then that would be a lie. One that Albert spew here.

You know i just realized something .

Even after all the spinning .lying. shitting on fabases the FUD spreading .misinformation articles and " it makes no difference statements " There is still one sollid fact:

PS4 will still outsell the Xbox one worldwide 2:1 if not more here in the EU.

nothing will change that .

There's even a new rumor thrown around about PS4s overheating. That's how desperate MS is.

Thankfully, famousmortimer has asked around and pretty much shot it down.

Video game journalism is pretty bad a lot of the time. They so easily spread misinformation carelessly. Hell, even Giant Bomb was guilty of this at times. When the Xbox One DRM rumors were spreading for months, they said it wouldn't happen. When they announced it, they said it wasn't a big deal and Sony would do the same. When people tried to voice their opinion to the companies on social media, they said it would have no effect. When Sony said they had no DRM, they said it would have no impact. When Microsoft changed their policies, they basically ignored all of their claims in how consumers can't make their voice heard. When specs are broken down of the two consoles and its apparent that there is a 50% gap in GPU performance and RAM issues on the Xbox One, they say it won't mean much at all. Then we see games being 720p on Xbox One and 1080p on PS4 and they dismiss it as something you can barely tell the difference between. It's shitty reporting. The video game journalism industry is such a joke. This isn't about bashing Microsoft, it's about people trying to speak with authority on subjects they don't know to a large audience. Imagine if sports, movies, music, books, etc only had writers and critics of the same quality as the video game industry.

Is it really that hard to set up two identical tvs and games and have one game run at 720p and one at 1080p and ask random participants if they can tell an obvious difference? It's something they could even do today with console games that play at 1080p.

It was OK but then...

It was later made obvious by CBOAT and Peter Dodd (a.k.a., Famousmortimer) that the Xbox One was going to come in behind the technological performance curve of the PS4 and maybe even potentially, the Wii U.

No one said this ever Cinemablend. No one implied it, famous didn't imply it, CBOAT didn't imply it. That would be ridiculous. So, don't go so far in the other extreme :P

Yeah, that one statement kind of undermines their credibility on an issue that they were otherwise pretty spot on with. Potentially less powerful than the Wii U? Uh huh... right. FUD can be slung both ways. Just sayin'.

What a great article. I think the author went too far at times (Doritocracy), but still, he really hit the nail on the head about what the gaming press is doing. All of a sudden, desiring the most powerful tech for the buck isn't a thing. Man, where was I when that happened? Oh yeah, I was here at neogaf when it was announced that CoD on the Xbox is 720p. I wonder if this means that people will stop upgrading their iphones and ipads every year?

Does anyone remember when the Mazda RX-8 and the Nissan 350Z came out? The RX-8 had a wankel rotary that revs high, burns oil by design (which makes frequent oil checks necessary - and the oil dipstick is located in a place guaranteed to burn you if you check it hot), and can flood if you start the engine and shut it off before it's sufficiently warmed up. Also, a flood means a tow to a dealer or garage to clear. However, the small engine allowed you to place the engine in front of the front axle and they moved the gas tank so it was in front of the rear axle. The car also had 4 'doors' and decent back seat space. Compared to the 350Z, it was woefully underpowered and turbos and other tuner upgrades were sufficiently difficult to add that to my knowledge, kits were never developed.

The 350Z is a standard front-engine, rear drive car. It's fast, powerful, and relatively simple. Tuner kits are everywhere. The major flaw is that the aux-power outlet was behind the driver instead of in the dash and they fixed it in the first revision.

The 350Z sold to its intended audience and is now the 370Z.

The RX-8 sold mostly in the automatic transmission (auto transmissions are sacrilege in sports cars and because the RX-8 hits high revs, the auto also completely neuters the available power). It sold to an audience that neither cared about the power inadequacies and hence also didn't care about the improved balance. Mazda enthusiast fans bought the Mazdaspeed 3 (I owned the 2007 and 2010) instead of the 'not really good at anything, major trade-offs' RX-8.

All this to say - the PS4 is a 350Z and the Xbone is an RX-8.

I owned an 04 RX-8. 6 speed. That car handled like a dream. But it was an unreliable pos.

I bought it over the 350z because the 350 was a rough riding rattling shit box. I also wanted 4 seats.

I know own a 2013 6 speed Mustand 5.0.

And I'm buying a PS4.

Not sure how any of those things coorelate.

I really don't get the "trade offs," "balance," and "720p with more effects looks better" arguments.

The people saying them do realize that it's not like the XBO and PS4 are hard coded to render at 720p and 1080p respectively, right? It's not like the PS4 is forcing developers to waste power on 1080p if they don't want to use it, and it's not like the XBO just caps out at 720p to ensure developers can use more effects if they want to.

Like, if a PS4 developer wants to make a 720p with better graphics and framerate, then there's nothing stopping them. But they have more options. There's less for them to trade off if they go to 1080p.

It also had a transmission closer to the on/off switch in the Mazdaspeed 6 than the progressively improving Mazdaspeed 3 transmissions. I'm an experienced manual driver and it was really easy to stall the RX-8 and Mazdaspeed 6. Hell, the first 2007 MS3 had me stalling more than usual. Also, my engine literally dropped out of the car TWICE because of the flawed tranny mount and mushy driver's side mount. They fixed it in the 2010 revision.

I remember Brad being more reasonable a few years ago, now I can't stand any of those guys, they shouldn't talk about tech if they know nothing about it.

At this stage, I'd feel like I was doing a disservice to gaming, by purchasing an Xbox One.

This whole situation has been like a slow motion car crash, and a don't feel like I can trust what MS say.

Like Sony this gen, MS need to take a step back, reassess everything they are doing, and come back with a new approach, and fresh ideas.

Been driving a manual for 20 years. Never had a problem with the 8's tranny.

Back to regularly scheduled resolutiongate. I don't want to get a thread shutdown going off topic.

That microsoft tweet is like saying my DVD upscaled by the DVD player to 1080p is 1080p and just as good as a blu-ray. Makes.no.sense.

I don't think anyone should depend on the GB guys (except Klepeck) for serious issues like these. They have good chemistry with each other and have funny quicklooks. That's about it though, anything else and they might as well be average joes.

Totalbiscuit weighs in the resolutiongate. It's pretty good commentary.

I'm not giving him the views, but I'm pretty sure if he uses footage, he's going to use digital foundry's despite the controversy.

He used DF footage.

I'd expect no less from Pro DRM TB.
Lol Brad Shoemaker is complaining about Wii games looking like butt after saying resolution doesn't matter. Bam.

But he doesn't hide his bias, or he's just so poor at hiding it, he doesn't put up much effort.

Looking at some older Face-Offs just for kicks, this caught my eye:

So let's start with image quality. The 360 puts on a very impressive show despite Black Ops 2 running at just 880x720 native resolution. The 2x MSAA in combination with an impressive upscaling filter does wonders with the process of clearing sharp edges on the cut-down horizontal axis, and the very worst aliasing we see is on 2D elements, such as blocky-looking foliage that can crop up in the earlier levels. By comparison to the PC version running at a native 1280x720 with 4x MSAA, we see only a very slight softness to the image on Microsoft's box - the decision to go with this setup is undoubtedly an improvement over Modern Warfare 3, which scaled both axes to a murkier effect.

There's clearly something amiss on the PS3 side though, and the cause is twofold: resolution and Treyarch's choice of anti-aliasing method. We find the game hitting the same 880x720 figures enjoyed on 360 in places, but this isn't a constant throughout the game. Rather, it appears to be more dynamic than first thought, where several tests of the first level's river scene gives us a reading as low as 832x624. Scaling these resolutions typically produces more pixel crawl on PS3 as a result, and looks a world away from the sharpness what we're seeing on 360, which remains locked at its own resolution.

A resolution drop of this nature isn't enough to account for the excess blurriness on its own, however. What we think is a heavy post-processing technique is used to clear up the sharp edges, and some of its characteristics appear a match for the long-neglected quincunx AA available natively on Sony's hardware. As a result, Black Ops 2's edge-smoothing on PS3 is generally more thorough than rival platforms, even with the PC running at 4x MSAA in our captures. The downside to this approach is the heavy residual blurring to texture-work, plus the muddying of foliage elements in the background.

Following our earlier blog entry, we've been informed that the blurring seen on PS3 can be alleviated by deleting the latest 56MB patch, listed as update 1.02. Sure enough, we find taking direct 24-bit RGB captures of the game patched and unpatched reveals a considerable divide in image quality. Textures appear more defined in like-for-like shots, and the rampant blurriness to bushes and grass tufts is lessened.

It's a step forward, but even with this fix, overall clarity is still clearly below that of the 360 version. This earlier iteration of the game also appears to run with the same range of internal frame-buffers, and we once again record 832x624 during the opening Pyrrhic Victory campaign stage.

A problem also arises for players focused on the online multiplayer modes, which demand that you run on the latest blur-inducing patch. It's not an ideal situation, as the blur can be a real impairment to visibility when scanning into the distance on long maps without a scope to hand.

Update: It's all change again, with another PS3 patch rolled out on November 17 restoring the look of the game to the unpatched original. Image quality still favours the Microsoft platform however: moving to the 360 version after a PS3 session is still like wiping away the grease from a lens.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-black-ops-2-face-off

So, going between 880x720 and 832x624 is "a world away" and "like wiping away the grease from a lens." If any gaming press is reading this thread, it's stuff like this that makes these horrible arguments of 1080p and 720p being indistinguishable completely laughable and idiotic.

Still the debate rages on, not sure about what at this point since the deal is sealed. The problem is, they could argue that Kinect makes the difference but have decided to not support it in the slightest. There is no killer game for it, they as usual expect others to develop all the games for them. Or hell, that they have learned their lessons and beat Sony in other areas like the DLNA thing, more games, cheaper RRP for games in Europe (thanks Sony!) etc..

So I will just leave this here, I seriously thought about using Mr. Penello's face at this point but he can still be redeemed by the truth.

All I can do is laugh, hahahahahaha. WOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWW.

But now it's "Gotta put it under a microscope to see a difference" or "you're sitting way too far to notice the difference between the same game running at [DOUBLE the pixels]"

lmfao. I love gaming journalism.
