Game Informer: "Ryse: Son Of Rome Is As Fun As Dialing Phone Numbers" (ouch)

Lords of Shadow was a poor man's God of War and I still enjoyed it. By the sound of what I'm hearing, it seems like Ryse is more of a poor man's Arkham City when it comes to combat.

Bingo..this is nothing like god of war..definitely not in the sense of scale or combat. Ryse combat is a janky and a more boring version of Batman...then again maybe Assassin's creed might be a better comparison

This isn't really surprising. What sort of pedigree does Crytek have in this genre?

About as much as a sack of dogfood

In fact, it's so pretty that the frequent interruption of pre-rendered cutscenes is baffling. For some reason, the video compression on the cinema sequences is incredibly noticeable, making the pre-rendered stuff look worse than the real-time graphics. The story is also by-the-numbers: a tale of revenge that telegraphs nearly every aspect of the story.

What the fuck Crytek?.. Can't even get the presentation right?

But I thought it was all about gameplay, and the games the push visuals and linear cinematic experiences aren't very good?

They are not mutually exclusive. RE4 and Half Life are lineair and cinematic, but have excellent gameplay.

This however, seems shallow as a puddle.

I don't even know how anyone could be doubtful by this, or say "mixed reception". All you have to do is watch footage and you can see just how terrible the gameplay looks.

That being said this is game informer. Can I pencil in Ryse at an 8 after seeing this thread? That is as low as AAA games go over there after all.

True on both accounts, I was reading the thread on the new Ryse gameplay video and saw so many positive reactions, then went home to watch it and the game looks graphically beautiful, but the gameplay looks horrendous. I don't understand what they changed since E3, instead of the quick time events showing the button on top of their heads they just glow the color of the corresponding button. How is that any different? And why in the world can executions not be failed, you just get a lower score instead? That is beyond stupid.

Nice.
Yeah, looking back at Hindle's past tirades on why games like Uncharted and Heavy Rain were "damaging" the industry with their focus on cinematic gameplay and high-end graphics, his current stance towards these type of games is a little extra embarassing to read.

Not surprising, I remember a lot of early impressions saying it was a pretty generic god of war clone. Footage has similarly looked very uninteresting gameplay wise. Seems like this thing was patched together for launch as more of a tech demo than anything else.

Oh, so I was right about it using 'in-engine' pre-rendered cutscenes (as in Uncharted) instead of it all running in realtime, as Crytek repeatedly insisted.

Oop.

That only applies for multiplatform games.

I'm not talking about any console power differences, or game design in general. I'm specifically addressing Hindle and past comments he's made starting he won't even try games like this (usually in reference to Naughty Dog games) and how he's all about gameplay.

Now that stance is fine and I can understand where someone with that opinion would be coming from. But when the show is on the other foot and it's a Xbox exclusive game designed in a way he's derided several times, it's fine?

Nice.

The guy is more hypocritical than Adam Sessler.

Nah. Marlowe Briggs is a God of War clone. Ryse doesn't quite aspire to such lofty heights.

lol my mind was already made up on getting this game at launch, so there's almost nothing that any other person or website can say to not make me not excited about this game. :)

Nice try, Gameinformer, but it's a swing and a miss!

No one here is surprised you're getting this game no matter what, but how exactly is this a swing and a miss for Gameinformer?

Lol, I don't know what anyone expected. There was no way they were going to change anything about what they showed at E3. That would have required them to go back to square 1 and it already sounds like they've had to do that at least two other times since the game was originally announced.

It's just a bad exclusive, oh well. It'll be interesting if it sells well at all (and if it does, oooohhh boooy people are going to be maaaaaad).

Swing and a miss? They aren't trying to dissuade you from buying the game, they're just stating how they felt the game was (and many other share the same opinion).

Apparently GameInformer hatched a cunning scheme to try and dissuade potential buyers from Ryse by writing a very negative preview, while in secret, Ryse is actually game of the year material. They just don't want anyone to know it. SenjutsuSage cracked the code.

Also, if Forza 5 is 'stunning', why does all of the media they've released for it since E3 belie that fact?

I honestly envy your unbridled optimism for both Ryse and the Xbox One. I wish I could but looking at everything coming in about them I can't muster up any excitement. I genuinely hope you aren't disappointed.

I bet if this game had QTEs with a half naked lady protagonist you guys would be calling it 'fine' as well. But since it's just a bunch of button mashing with buff men in armor, it has little value to GAF.

I'm onto you...

Oily buff men in skirts are far superior so I don't know about that.

And wasn't this changed from a kinect game long ago and the original version scrapped? One can see the animation transitions are a bit rough but I see nothing that indicates this would have been a kinect game. Executions are just slightly more involved versions of what you get in a God of War game.

Not surprised. I can easily believe these impressions since Crytek has no benefit of the doubt with me. Their games are always buggy and kind of amateur in their mechanics.

From the start, I figured there was no way they could go from FPS (their comfort zone) to a third-person action game without it being a disaster.

I called this shit day one it was announced. This is going to be the worst launch title next gen.

The combat looks utter shit. For a fighting game your combat needs to be solid.

Where is the depth:
where is the stamina bar to prevent spamming?
where are the combo systems, are there any combos?
where are the different weapons with unique move sets?
upgrade system?
armour variations?

This game is a linear fighting game with a bad battle system. Now news comes out that the story is cliche too lol.

The only thing this game has going for it is its graphics. Oh its made by Crytek. What a coincidence.

I take back what I said. The games combat actually looks decent

If it truly is a button masher, obviously it will reflect in review scores. Seeing this just make me excited about how good a GoW game will be a few years from now. By then I think I'll be ready considering that I haven't played one since 3

"Actual In-Game Footage!"

no shit. lol.

I feel like Ryse will be this gens Lair, not so much because of the control, but because of the lack of any real.. UMMPHhh to the genre. It looks cool, but as everyone has said, the actual gameplay options/design leaves a lot to be desired in 2013.

Even if they implemented Rocksteady's fighting system (Arkham asylum type), would have been awesome.

Whats being sold is that you're participating in Maximus style battles, but that autonomy as a player doesn't appear to be there, or the game world around it.

he could never touch the game and he still wouldn't be disappointed :P

=====

that being said, I liked this game since the initial reveal as well, my only worry was that there wasn't much variation beyond sword+shield limited combos and javelin moments. I still wanna try it out for myself, I never listen to reviewas >_>
