Game Informer: "Ryse: Son Of Rome Is As Fun As Dialing Phone Numbers" (ouch)

So he straight up lied then?

After looking at the gt footage I can't see how people can still say it's the best looking next-gen launch game.

it was pretty obvious that some bits of the history trailer ( marius on the stairs, the senator looking how rome burns) were not realtime or ingame

people on that thread were just delusional

So wait that part from the story trailer is prerendered? Because it looks too good compared to the gameplay.

95% of that trailer is pre-rendered. It's obvious when they can't even get a relative simple gameplay scene free of screen tearing but yet way more complex cutscenes were screen tearing free. That thread was pretty embarrassing of people stroking each other to pre-rendered cutscenes.

I don't know. For someone like myself that usually prefers singleplayer games Killzone, Resogun, and Knack are leagues ahead of Dead Rising and Forza.

If you're saying you prefer shooters, I can totally understand, but your sentence here makes no sense. You say your preference is based on having single-player games to play, then list two primarily single-player games. You're also ignoring other single player games available for both systems.

Jus' saying.

In This Thread we have a lot of the same gamers who defended Heavenly Sword lining up to punch on Ryse. Its a launch showpiece, something to show off the $500 you spent. Its not going to revolutionize gaming mechanics. Its a pretty Hack slash game. Its pretty simple. If I was leaning toward One it maybe on my list.

You mean the one that is at completely impossible to replicate angles with post-processing motion blur and antialiasing?

Gee I wonder why THAT looks good?

Imagine it's not that difficult for a developer to free the camera to get some incredible shots. Look at the PC screenshots thread for people using dev consoles do similar things. Suppose we'll see how the retail version turns out, but it seems a bit contradictory for you to say Turn10 has released poor media since E3 that makes the game look bad but at the same time the nice looking media is a horrible fake. Forza has always been a visually pleasing series despite some flat lighting.

Notice the careful choice of words. "it's live action and game".
That cutscence is not ingame or anywhere close to gameplay footage. Especially when it's 1080p native.

Either I missed some recent discussions or you have some remarkable memory.

Why not render the cutscenes in 900p and upscale if people don't care about that sort of thing?

I knew Heavenly Sword. I was good friends with Heavenly Sword.

I loved Heavenly Sword.

And Ryse is no Heavenly Sword.

Who knows? I may enjoy it more than that game, though (and I liked HS). At least Ryse won't have the forced Six-Axis stuff. Guiding those cannonballs was pretty retarded.

It's directly counter to the current XBO narrative which is "gameplay matters more than graphics". It exposes that narrative as instead being, "gameplay matters more than graphics when our graphics are worse, and graphics matter more than gameplay when our graphics are better."

Whats surprising is that, generally, gaming publications won't call out a bad game until its review time. For all these people to just come right out that tells me that its really bad.

Yeah but after watching the gameplay I can understand it. Every enemy is the same and the only other thing you do is kick ladders etc. That will be boring in 10 min of play.

Lol. So much of the recent story trailers, vid docs, and commercials have contained prerendered footage (obviously using the game's engine)?

That is quite deceptive; kind of like the bs ND pulled with Uncharted cutscenes this gen.

They had a mixture of prerendered and realtime scenes, eg this one is real-time:

Didn't Yerli also say that everything is in-engine to damage control the polygon count reduction? Another lie after the Full HD XP?

I looked at the tweets again, this is what he said:

"#Ryse Hero Marius 85k polys? It was choice: 150k polys w LODs vs 85K + better shading + no LODs (stable). The latter wo at better quality!"

So we assumed from the "no LODs" comment that there won't be higher LOD models in real time cutscenes. Considering that most of the cutscenes are seemingly pre-rendered, he technically didn't lie I guess. Still dirty.

Clearly, if there's one reason to play Ryse, it's not the gameplay. Son of Rome, at the very least, is a spectacle filled with tons of CryEngine-powered eye candy. In fact, it's so pretty that the frequent interruption of pre-rendered cutscenes is baffling. For some reason, the video compression on the cinema sequences is incredibly noticeable, making the pre-rendered stuff look worse than the real-time graphics. The story is also by-the-numbers: a tale of revenge that telegraphs nearly every aspect of the story. You won't be surprised by how Marius ends up being so damn angry--but at least there's some solid performances backing the cinematics.

I have no idea what you're trying to say.

What is wrong with saying I have a single player preference and then listing "primarily single player games"? I overlooked Crimson Dragon, but I see nothing else worth mentioning in either library of launch exclusives.

Stop propagating this misuse. If the gladiator got a thumbs down that meant he would stay on earth. Thumbs up meant send him to heaven, ie. kill him. So thumbs up was bad, thumbs down was good.

I don't think Romans located "heaven" in the sky, it was all underground.

*edit : seems that the original gesture was "thumb out or thumb hidden", direction had no meaning.

There are, in reality, no ancient references to the thumbs going either up or down in the Colosseum, at the vital moment of decision. Later authors who have claimed so have simply not understood the Latin phrases. Pollice verso does not mean a down-turned thumb it simply means a turned thumb -- one that is moved in some unspecified way. No particular direction can be assumed. The posture of the thumbs of those wishing to spare the gladiator was pollice compresso -- compressed thumbs. In other words, not thumbs up, but thumbs covered up -- thumbs folded away out of sight. What the spectators did, in fact, was to extend their thumbs for a kill and hide their thumbs for an acquittal. The reason for this is not hard to find. If they wanted the victorious man to plunge in his sword, they mimed the act with their hands, their extended thumbs stabbing the air in encouragement. If they wanted to spare the defeated fighter because he proved himself valiant in battle, they did the opposite of sticking out their thumbs -- they hid them away. This made sense in an arena as vast as the Colosseum, where the kill/no-kill signals would have to he strongly contrasting to he visible at all.

The same way people did for Uncharted and The Last of Us.

Call of duty probably will be.

As far as exclusives, my money is on killzone, ryse, and forza.

In June Killzone had about twice as many pre orders than any other launch exclusive and since then it has been added to the Mega bundle with the camera, so sales will be even higher, Really expect it to comfortably be the top seler at launch, though Forza may surpass it depending on if it has a long tail.

Seriously though, Killer Instinct and DR3 are really the only good Xbox One launch games (I am sure Forza is too, but Sim racers are really not my thing).

It's like they are finally experiencing what PC gamers have gone through with console ports the last 5 years. Prerendered, poorly compressed videos are usually the worst looking parts of console ports.
