Game Informer: "Ryse: Son Of Rome Is As Fun As Dialing Phone Numbers" (ouch)

If it's got video compression, then it's a video file, it doesn't really take an eagle's eye to spot video compression artifacts at less than ideal bitrates. Crytek guy was probably thinking that cutscenes are not a CG rendered in Maya or something like that. They are created with their own engine. Bigger surprise is why the hell are they poorly compressed when they don't have to worry about the DVD size limit anymore.
That's the odd bit, if they are in fact pre-rendered which compression would imply then one would imagine it might not be a final thing? Game is 47 GBs so it shouldn't be an issue. Stream's quality was exceptional and I didn't notice any compression in the cutscenes although of course that's hardly a good way to judge things. Did notice some banding in the multiplayer intro though.

He said that particular one wasn't, and even then I'm not sure I believe him because the Skip prompt took time to show up (indicating that loading has finished). I don't think he was asked either, it was just a comment he made when they were gushing over CryEngine.

Skip prompts don't really mean all that much, lots of games using in-engine cutscenes have them. DmC would be an example that I played recently(although it has some pre-rendered ones as well).

CryEngine works that way though (at least in Crysis 3 it did). They use pre-rendered cutscenes to bridge the loading between levels and once it is done the skip prompt appears. Video quality wasn't that hot there as well. Of course maybe they changed it for Ryse, but I doubt it. So this means the cutscenes between the levels and at the start of each one are probably pre-rendered to mask the loading while all the cutscenes inside the level are rendered in real time using their engine.

Well I watched some of the livestream. Game Informer are talking shite.

I'd imagine that watching a stream by the developers intended to promote their game is going to be quite a different thing to a neutral party actually playing the game and reporting on their experience...

Nobody is disputing that it's not a nice game to look at, Game Informer are saying that it isn't a whole lot of fun to actually play.

"Skip" shows up in cryengine cutscenes when ever you hit a button on your keyboard, mouse, or controller.

Not to show when loading was finished. (this could have changed for all I know)
I'm currently playing through Crysis 3, and I assure you that the prompt pops up automatically when loading is complete.

Crysis 3 has almost no pre rendered cutscenes (just the intro one). What are you talking about?

PC? I did not notice this...

Those were complete segways to new zones and the like, many games have those transitional cutscenes. Figured what everyone was referring to were the cutscenes shown in the trailers which were all in the middle of gameplay segments.

After each mission there's one. Have all the grid data and map silliness, similar to Call of Duty.

I don't know how you can say that until you play it. The complaint isn't about shit graphics, it is about repetitive gameplay, which wouldn't show up in a live stream unless they have a secondary camera on the dude's hand pressing the same button over and over.

Change the graphics to Fantasy.

Put a SEGA logo at the start.

Rename it to GOLDEN AXE: RESURRECTION.

But keep the game entirely the same: 99% of reviewers and GAF'ers spontaneously orgasmically combust.

I watched some of the livestream and I would agree with GI. Pretty graphics and boring mechanics and gameplay. And considering its Crytek, I personally expect the story to be 'bleh' level.

That's true, some had higher aliasing. Then again, some gameplay footage in that trailer had tearing while other didn't. It could be a mix of old and new footages.
But why would prerendered cutscenes have heavy shader and specular aliasing?

Game assets are much heavier than they were in PS3 games, plus there's pressure to keep the game size as low as possible because MS wants to offer it on the digital store.

Those are like funky lines and scrolling text though. Scarcely like cutscenes: the aquivalent of early 90s intermission fluff text.

I am talking about the first person cutscenes in all of the Crysis games.

All the character based cut scenes from the first person are in engine running in real time. Purposefully so (to show off their engine).

Yeah, because Golden Axe: Beast Rider did so well in reviews.

Why would Xbox be losing money at this point, let alone $2B a year? The hardware is profitable, XBL is a cash cow and the console enjoys good software sales (=royalties). I call BS on that report.

R&D for new console, controller, kinect and also marketing, buying exclusives from third party studios, services, servers, repairs... the list goes on and on...

As you can the entertainment segment is VERY small compared to MS other markets and does not like the areas provide profit ear after year. Just imagine how the numbers will look this year with the new console and all costs it will bring MS.

Yeah ........ until they play it,

Sega did this themselves before. Trying to revive franchises long dead, like Altered Beast. I am pretty sure they did it with Golden Axe too. People were enthralled initially. It didn't mean squat in the end though, when they realized the games suck.

I know that, sorry for being unclear. I was responding to the person's comment mentioning Crysis 3 having pre-rendered cutscenes and saying that the ones that were just the end mission fluff as you said.

Not saying it's not real time, but "heavy shader and specular aliasing" doesn't prove it's not pre-rendered, maybe because it was rendered using their engine.

The only in their favour with that is the console this time is being sold at a profit whereas usually sold at a loss, so perhaps there will be less of a blow than expected.

No idea, I never understood why ND did it like that either, but I guess to not make them too different from the gameplay. Maybe in case of Ryse, they originally had them with aliasing, and then rerendered with better AA, and as the trailer was mix of old and new, both ended up there. Or maybe some scenes are simply realtime just as you said. If that's the case, I doubt you'd hear complaint saying that action is "constantly interrupted by video cutscenes", like it was posted earlier though. He was very specific about it.

Game assets are much heavier than they were in PS3 games, plus there's pressure to keep the game size as low as possible because MS wants to offer it on the digital store.
Actually someone just said the game is 47GB, so they are hitting the BD size limit basically. I find it hard to believe video compression can be bad if the game is that large, though.

Yes that is true but that cover manufacturing and perhaps shipping but none of the others i mentioned.

This game has never looked like anything more than an uninspired button masher. How are these polarizing comments a surprise?

Bad gameplay must be better than no gameplay. No?
In what universe do Quantic Dreams games not have gameplay? They are a kind of version of point & click adventure games with interactive cutscenes (QTEs, that is). If you don't think their games have gameplay, then a lot of adventure games of the old days have no gameplay. At least you can fail QTEs in QD's games and that has consequences, unlike Ryse where you can fail everything and still kill enemies.

I'd rather take slow-paced adventuring & QTEs in a Quantic Dream game over boring-ass repetitive and shallow combat of Ryse any day of the week.

Still waiting for a compelling reason to get a next gen console. Titanfall is clearly the most promising looking next gen game and it's on pc so yea.

I don't think the SEGA name means as much as you think it does these days.

That subreddit is filled with the most irrational pieces of shit I've ever seen.

The tweet isn't even calling out the Xbox One, just a certain game, yet they choose to launch a crusade on anyone who opposes them.

It looks "phenomenal"? Let's here you say that when it's released.

Can no negative comment be made without it coming from some biased source?

Not to mention they called out CBOAT. Just a bunch of asshats.

Every negative comment must be from a "troll, hater, sony fanboy." Bunch of fucking morons over there.
