Fighting Games Weekly | Nov 4-10 | I-No what that finger smells like [18+]

Just watched the round robin from last night. Wasn't expecting much from the fei mirror but those punishes against chicken wings were awesome. Focusing the first part, then dashing forward to go underneath the remainng hits and punishing with crouching jab into rekka was too good.

How many documentaries does the FGC need? At least 1,000, apparently.

I would feel the same way if Hold Back to Block wasn't behind it. Esteban does some fantastic work and I'm really looking forward to seeing what he puts out.

I'm biased, as I speak to Esteban regularly, so this is obviously subjective/biased, but I really like the style of what he does. Also, he's the kind of guy to have a plan/schedule and stick to it through the very end.

I'll just say, look forward to the Kickstarter.

One Frame Link Guy gets a pass because he seems like a pretty cool dude

Much appreciated! I try. =)

Wait, what? It's fucking Conan. What did they expect?

I heard he got booted off.

It reminds me of when Sessler commentated for Evo finals, which was a disaster. I didn't hear Conan (someone please link me to archives if they're available), but it's Conan. He's going to bring incredible exposure to everything (a few order of magnitudes than Sessler), you let the man do what he wants.

And no matter what people say of Gootecks/Jessica Nigri at VxG, I felt she did commentary the way that people not obvious to the scene should; her humor was a definite value-add, IMO.

brb registering americanreset.com

If you knew the number of domains that I registered in the FGC space, heads would explode. I've dropped a lot of them, but it's cheap and you never know when something might be pertinent.

American resets is all yours though.

I'm having doubts that this even happened.

I mean, on what planet could TriForce get away with punching someone in one of the most drama-thirsty communities?

When are we going to get a new fighting game by a new studio? They've always been the same ones, Capcom, Netherealm, Arc Systems, SNK, Namco, Rare, and Nintendo. I want some new blood to shine.

Iron Galaxy developed 3rd Strike Online, Marvel vs Capcom Origins, Darkstalkers Resurrection, and Divekick.
French Bread developed the Melty Blood games and Under Night In Birth.

And then there's also Examu, that did Arcana Heart and Aquapazza.

There are a bunch.

Oh, Divekick's an actual game and Arcana Heart is like under the radar as well. If you weren't a deep nerd like us you wouldn't know about it vs. Street Fighter, Tekken, Mortal Kombat, and Marvel which everyone knows about.

Fighting games are a niche genre, I dunno what you're expecting.
But there have been dozens of new franchises in the last 10 years.

Skullgirls is supposedly popular on Steam, you could try there.

"Supposedly"

It's pretty consistently at between 100-200 concurrent players peaking daily. It's pretty dead on consoles because they're not getting any of the updates anywhere near as quickly. Big Band beta has just started and they don't even have Squigly yet.

Both of these games are probably doing far better on Steam in terms of popularity than they ever did on consoles due to a combination of netcode / infrastructure improvements (Skullgirls lobbies, KOF's playable netcode) and I guess a PC audience thats pretty hungry to get into a genre thats commonly neglected on their platform.

The Arena combat/1v1 FPS is niche. Or dead. idk. I still play quake live once in a while and get owned. They used to be huge. All things go in circles. Fighting games had their big time.

When will the current team/class cod/bf based stuff go niche? idk, It will be around for a while.

Personally, I don't want those kind of FPSs to go niche per say. They are like the tent pole games of the industry it would seem, I don't like them, but I am happy for the people that do.

Maybe FGs will get big again maybe. I love skateboarding games and rock band/guitar hero. Those have gone niche now, Sad times, haha.

Action games (of the stylish variety) have gone niche too and not only that but they are on a steady decline. There is not a single action game IP that is getting better in terms of gaining market share... closest thing is Castlevania LoS 2 and that's a big maybe.

You really need heavy RPG elements plus open world level design in an action game to make it sell to the masses or you need heavy set pieces. Just doing cool combos isn't enough people want more customization and more shit to do with more locations to go to as well as just dick around.

I'd like to think that games "go niche" because what it means to be mainstream changes with time as the gaming populace, budgets, and sales get bigger, but that's probably not true.

Ah yea, MOBAs. I wonder when they will hit big on console, or if ever at all. They are already huge of course. Those kids should get in on dat FGC.

Somebody will get the right formula maybe next gen.

Maybe that Thai KOF moba will save us all! hehe.

I wouldn't mind if a better company handled DFO for the US. It made over a billion dollars worldwide and is still getting updates and a large playerbase in asia, while also having tournaments for it. It had a following in US but I wonder how it's numbers compared to other games Nexon handled like Vindictus, to let them keep going and decide to kill DFO. I know maplestory is getting a sequel and that game is also making lots of money. Even though it played like a brawler, the mentality in pvp was pretty much a fighting game.

That's when FPS was new. I want to see COD and clones go the way of Street Fighter/fighting games.
I think we might see a fall in military shooters for next gen. Not a huge fall but a significant enough decrease. That doesn't mean a fall in FPS though... you might see something like Titanfall or Destiny replace them as top subgenre.
