Playstation 4: The Little Things

I think the controller speaker sounds like a high quality phone call. It's still obviously mechanized, but not in a way that sounds completely terrible. When contextualized in an audio log or a computer voice or something like that it sounds 100% perfect. If you push it farther than that it, it sounds cheap.

It's much better than the Wii controllers, maybe slightly worse than a DS or PSP speaker.

Sounds amazing to me. I completely forgot it had a speaker until I played Resogun and it kept yelling at me. Then I played Killzone and the audio logs played. Sounds so good. I'm totally happy with the quality of it.

I definitely expect to see folders, music, and themes/colour options soon. I can't complain about the UI other than that.

Actually, I wish you could resize the tiles. I want to make them small and run a sexy theme, PS3 style.

in resogun the controller tells you what to do, and if you are failing

That is amazing and I love it when it does that...

Sound Shapes has cool sounds effects through the controller too. Also the light bar changes colors thst match the level and it pulses to the beat of the music...

Not being able to pause downloads or set priority is my pet peeve right now. I'm on a really crummy connection and the system was designed to just simultaneously download everything you throw at it instead of limiting itself to only 1 like PS3/360.

Same here. I'm struggling with 150 kb/s and not being able to manage where and when that is used is a huge issue for me. It wouldn't be uncommon for me to download large files for days, starting and stopping whenever I didn't need my connection for anything else. I'm considering returning my PS4 and getting an Xbox One if I can pause downloads on it
no, not really, but I do hope they add pausing in a future update.

Installs and downloads are still a separate thing?
I haven't spent enough time with the system so I might be wrong with a couple of points but from what I can tell, when it finishes the download it automatically switches to background installation if you're not running a game. If you're in game, it'll automatically installs in the background once you quit the game. There's also no installation bar, it just says Installing. I haven't payed enough attention to see how long installs take, but it seems pretty quick compared to PS3 installs.

Can we talk about the little things that bother us, too?

- The eight little loady bars that have to pass when I press to download something on the PlayStation Store.

- No sorting options in the library.

- No sorting options in trophies.

- Library groups apps with games.

- Can't boot to games library(unless I missed it).
- Can't delete multiple friends at once.

I can see people online on PS3 and message them but they can't see that I'm online on my PS4. Says message sent from a device other than a PS3 system.

They really must update PS3 with this kind of stuff. Isn't it like free marketing? Guy sees friend online on Vita/PS4, wants to buy one... but no, at this moment PS3 friend list simply hides people online at their Vitas/PS4.

Today I was online on the Vita and saw friends playing on PS3, PS Vita and PS4.

So the problem is only with PS3's friend list.

So it kinda freaked me out a bit when a Killzone audio log started playing... from my controller.

Neat, but... now I wonder how I can control the volume on it. Was pretty loud.

That son of a B' speaker has some BASS to it. Nothing like anything the Wii, PSP, Vita, DS's, or anything else has done for me. It makes my controller vibrate a bit. As far as I'm concerned, it's more than I was hoping for.

Yeah, I loved that, too.. even though No More Heroes did it first.. at least, I experienced it first with No More Heroes.

I hate the fact that you cannot pause downloads, I do not like simultaneous downloads. I turn it off on every device I have.

I do not like the patching system, or install system. I just want to install it then play, they should let you have this option just like it is on the ps3. I get the new way it does it, I just do not care for it, more then likely will get use to it, but it is just weird atm,

Also I have no clue what is downloaded and what isn't anymore. I downloaded A Creed 4 from the ps3-ps4 upgrade and I thought it was downloading the whole game as I let it go all day, but when I got into the game the MP wasn't downloaded at all, and neither was the extra content. I just do not get it, why not let me download the full game and not piecemeal like it is?

I do like the snappy nature of the UI, the web browser seems to be great (for now), streaming is awesome, and the store is a lot faster.

All in all I like the system just think somethings need to fixed.

Is the audio like the way it does on the Wiimote...or better? Wiimote was great for sound effects but long sentences (like No More Heroes) and it was very low quality.

Well shit, answered. Thanks.

In Killzone, if you pick up an audio log, the whole thing plays from the controller -- it sounds REALLY clear. It actually shocked me at first, because I didn't expect it ^_^;

Edit:

Haha -- just saw this, it was startling!

Yes.

I can't imagine them not adding filters within the first year. It's pretty much a personal page pulled straight from the PS3/PS4 Store without the filters.

How do you see what add ons you actually have? I have yet to figure this out,

I like being able to plug in a pair of earphones directly to my controller instead of having to wear a bulky headset. That's probably my favorite feature so far, actually.

The one thing thats bugging me is not having control over installs, and just in general feeling like I'm in the dark with them.

I downloaded NFS: Rivals off on PSN and played through some Killzone while it downloaded and installed (wonderful). I got the message the game was installed, so I quit out of Killzone and started up NFS. Sure enoug I saw the intro screens and was playing within moments. Once I did the unskippable training (shakes fist at EA) I immediately got put into a screen with "installing 20%", with no other options.

Now Rivals is very, very slowly installing. But the thing is, I can't play another game while it installs. Any other games causes it to shut out of Rivals. I get promoted of course, but still.

Is there some way around this? Or am I supposed to just let my PS4 sit in low power mode or wait overnight to play more of this game?

I don't get it.

There's an option for the controller volume in the system menu.

Hold PS Button -> Adjust Device Settings
Thanks for this. Will tweak the settings.

-Suspend/resume all over the place (without coming on from standby)
-fast & smooth. like shockingly so, could not believe how fast PS Store came up when I selected it.
-streaming/sharing and watching other people's streams is also fast and smooth
-UI design is amazing. Very easy to navigate.
-Controller speaker freaked me the fuck out first time I heard voice come from it (in killzone).
-gyro keyboard typing.
-updates/installs while system is in standby
-Fast downloads
-listening to game audio by having headphones plugged into the controller. sogood.gif
-UI music is cool :p

Launch woes. That's it. This is exactly like the PS3 launch except some of the features that weren't there before are here now. If you want a rough timeline of upgrades, there's no reason for them not to follow roughly the same format, here's the wiki for the PS3. Look, even DLNA was missing for 7 months-ish.

I love the feel of the controller, also the fact that you can switch between running a game and then going to the main menu on the PS4 really quickly. It just feels really natural and smooth. Also the system launches pretty quick as far as I am concerned.

Also the music in the menu makes it really cool. Not really an important feature but it's all like 'ooooh, ahhh' when that music is playing.

The first time you suck up relics in Knack or hear the mechanised voice in Resogun will make you feel all sorts of giddy. Lots of interesting things for developers to do with that controller...

Get the camera and try PlayRoom... and you'll hear the little robots chattering "inside the controller"... heh.

I almost dropped the controller when it happened the first time.

Still can't access the friends list while watching a Blu-ray movie. That was incomprehensible in 2006, but now it actually pisses me off.

I didn't expect to see my movie/TV licenses from the PS3 work on my PS4 as well.
Figured that content would be restricted to my older console.

Incidentally, given how sparse the current Video Marketplace is in the PlayStation Store that's the only way to access unmigrated content on the new system.

The thing that bugs me the most is the listing icons on the home screen. Can I remove the Playroom, Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited?

Also in the TV/Video apps section, why don't the ones you've downloaded automatically go to the top row.

Most things are pretty good though. Well I wish I could play videos off a flash drive or something. This things pretty lackluster in terms of non internet media playback.

I'm not sure. I can't find anything for BF4, but I think that's because the China Rising DLC is just an unlock key.

My guess is for real add-ons, you go to the store page/live detail in the dashboard and scroll down to related items. That's the only place I can think of the current UI could display DLC.

And to get back on topic, I'm fucking loving the universal screenshot feature. They need to add more options for uploading though. I want the whole Google suite (YouTube, G+, GDrive, etc...) and I'd also like SkyDrive but I doubt that will ever happen.

The biggest jump in next gen isnt graphics. It's modern os functionality. Namely multitasking. So amazing being able to jump between apps and games so seamlessly.
So glad last gen is over.

Selecting a trophy notification doesn't bring you directly to the trophy description. Also a few buttons on the headset for volume would have been nicer than having to drill down into two menus.

Someone please answer this. So I'm online and everything. But I can't seem to access the social hub parts of the games. Like pressing down on the game icon and going into overview and being able to rate, see peoples screen captures and what not. Is it like this for anyone else?

Thanks for this. Will tweak the settings.

When you do please let me know if it bumps the audio back to the TV/sound system. I've never been a fan of audio through the controller. Also, if anybody has been playing with headphones, do you get both the game and controller audio when you plug them in, or do you have to change the settings in the game first?

Thanks.

Okay things I like:

The graphics. I've only played Knack but they are clearly a step above, but not by much.

The controller handles. It feels more comfortable holding it than the DS3.

Remote play is insanely cool.

What I don't like:

The interface is super simple, but just finding a specific setting to change is weird. Things are under weird selections. It's also very boring and uninspired. The lower options are weirdly large and intrusive.

The holes for the R2/L2 triggers are oddly jagged. I can tell it's going to wear on the skin on my fingers; it's already uncomfortable and I only played two hours.

This is kinda a small complaint, but you can't stream over Twitch while doing remote play.

Overall I'm mildly happy with my purchase.

The OS lags super hard when a large game is installing.

I'm installing NBA2K14 right now and floating around the OS and damn...struggle city. Heavy stutter and several times where the UI is non-responsive for several seconds at a time.

i like the Menu. simple and does its job.

The multitasking side. i could go into a game. go to the menu and check notification, hope back in, go out. all of that instantly.

what i don't like is no option for colored theme.unless it magically changes each month

To be fair, I really do enjoy the console at present. I won't go into all the issues with the system, as there are quite a few. Some of the ones listed do irk the daylights out of me and are just not very well thought out design wise (but look great when at arms length.)

My biggest issue is one that I'm surprised hasn't upset more Sony fans considering it was a sticking point for the Xbox One.

With the SEN/PSN going on the fritz due to high demand, it becomes clear just how much of the OS relies on the service. Things like having your scroll "reset" as it tries to grasp at the network, games pulling you out of the menu before load at the same instance, simply having non-functional aspects to your "recents" list because nothing seems to be stored locally, and a few others. If I could fix one thing it would to pull some of that stuff off of the service and place it locally, even at the cost of some memory.

Otherwise, had a great time testing out the streams, playing some of the games, and ultimately found it a positive experience. It's far from perfect, but it's still an awesome endeavor. The improvements should be pretty awesome.
Oh, that headset sucks balls man. I can't help it. Big balls. -Adam

This should be pointed out, According to the FCC filing for both the PS4 Dev Kit (https://apps.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/ViewExhibitReport.cfm?mode=Exhibits&RequestTimeout=500&calledFromFrame=N&application_id=435177&fcc_id=AK8DUTD1000) & the retail PS4 (https://apps.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/ViewExhibitReport.cfm?mode=Exhibits&RequestTimeout=500&calledFromFrame=N&application_id=583848&fcc_id=AK8CUH100C1), the PS4 is supposed have Bluetooth 4.0 in addition to Bluetooth 2.1 +EDR. On both of those links, the info is in the last .pdf file called "FCC 15C Report". It should be on page 5.

Now that it's confirmed that the wireless radio in the PS4 is a "Marvell Wireless Avastar 88W8797", we can 100% confirm that the PS4 has Bluetooth 4.0. Here's a link for the .pdf file info on the Marvell Wireless Avastar 88W8797 SoC:
http://www.marvell.com/wireless/assets/marvell_avastar_88w8797.pdf

I wonder why Sony doesn't list Bluetooth 4.0 as a tech spec feature on the PS4.

Well they did said the PS4 is suppose to have the potential for the future. It might just be in there to keep up with the standard as time goes by. Which is awesome to say the least.

Some of the lag definitely seems related to psn issues too. Trying to upload a screenshot has froze the console for me for a few seconds. I'm also getting like double notifications for downloaded games after the games have already installed. I've also seen the damn just jump right back to the dashboard a few times with the maintenance message.

All this. I don't have PS4 yet, but watching all the stream and gaint bomb live,
I've gonna say Sony build a damm good foundation!
It's got some flaws but nothing a firmware couldn't fix.
Need sorting on everything, stream channel, friend list, content, activity feed.
Need some customization, stream layout, UI, wallpaper.
Need some enhancement , stream quality, browser
Need some additional feature, CD, MP3, DLNA, twitter style follow, push notification

I so happy PS4 using secondary chip handle all those background stuff, without affecting performance is one of the best feature.
