Playstation 4: The Little Things

I am pretty disappointed in the "multi-tasking".

Am I doing something wrong or are only games capable of being suspended?

If I play Resogun, go to Hulu, then return to Resogun it picks up right where I left off. Cool.

If I start Hulu, go to Netflix, then when I return to Hulu it has to be rebooted. Lame.

Is there any way to disable the "This game will be suspended" notifications? Those are pretty obnoxious. Yeah, I know the OS is going to suspend the game if I start Netflix -- you don't have to tell me EVERY time.

Yeah game being suspended message is kind of redundant. I think they got Netflix working alongside games very recently, so this is not optimized yet. Hulu is not working that well though.

EDIT: I'm actually very surprised that multitasking between Netflix and games works so well. I was afraid it wouldn't. On Xbox one they showed off similar feature, but it wasn't shown on PS4.

Seen it asked but couldnt see the answer; if you're wearing hearphones can you route the the controller sound to the headphones?

Do headphones that function through optical output work ok? Does the chat function work by plugging a chat cable into the controller, as ive heard bluetooth isnt working yet.

Sorry for the questions, I would check myself if I had one but its not out yet in the UK.

Basically looking to see if my PX5's are going to work (I do have a chat cable).

Any answers appreciated.

They need to get rid of that suspend message. Also double tapping the PS button should let you swap between the last two open programs (game and netflix for example), right now it takes you back to the main OS and you've gotta manually select the app or game.

Anyone coming from exclusively 360 to the ps4?
- how is the initial impressions compared?

Here. I've also been in a deep media blackout on the PS4 since I preordered, to boot. First Sony console since the OG Playstation. Feels like I'm returning home.

I spent a minute trying to figure out how to turn it on, and then another five wondering where to put the discs in. "WHERE'S THE LOADING TRAY?~!?"

The UI is so fast and clean. Love the chimes and the audio cues in general.

The lack of themes or customization in general is pretty shocking and disappointing. I generally don't expect consoles to take a step back from prior generations.

Love the ds4, but I still feel the placement of the sticks on Microsoft's consoles are better. I'll probably enjoy playing fighting games on the ps4 more, though.

No real custom soundtracks is... a real blow. I've made great use of this feature since the OG Xbox and here I am in 2013 with a next gen console that still hasn't caught up in that regard. Music Unlimited is laggy, slow, has a limited library and is a bit of a joke in comparison. This is likely my biggest gripe with the PS4 so far.

Overall I'm super happy I bought the console. Haven't been this excited since the day my mom came home with the OG Playstation and Need For Speed. It's been an amazing, nostalgic experience.

Can we talk about the little things that bother us, too?

- The eight little loady bars that have to pass when I press to download something on the PlayStation Store.

- No sorting options in the library.

- No sorting options in trophies.

- Library groups apps with games.

- Still have yet to figure out how to access digital manuals or whether they even exist as a concept.

Listening to the audio logs in KZ through the DS4 makes me wish there were a dead space remake coming that would use this feature. Would be great for horror games.

All games with audio logs or radio communition better use this feature.

All games adopting this feature had better give us an option to disabled it, still.

They do work. I have a pair of Tritton AX720's and they work through the optical out and USB. The only thing is that I can't mute the chat audio separate from the game audio. But it should work.

2 weeks left to wait in UK before I get my hands on my own system is driving me crazy ;)
But wanted to ask, with the massive increase to the fiends list is there any grouping options available ? Would seem like insanity to let people scroll though 2000 friends. It takes long enough with 50 on the PS3.

Maybe this is the wrong place to ask, but is there really no way to stream music/video from your PC? Do I have to pay for Music Unlimited? -_-

With the SEN/PSN going on the fritz due to high demand, it becomes clear just how much of the OS relies on the service. Things like having your scroll "reset" as it tries to grasp at the network, games pulling you out of the menu before load at the same instance, simply having non-functional aspects to your "recents" list because nothing seems to be stored locally, and a few others.

Yes, this was a bit disorienting yesterday. You could literally get yanked away from what you were doing in the UI so that the PS4 could inform you "PSN is under maintenance". Then you'd have to get yourself back to where you were.

Definitely something for their to-do list.

I've asked this question in a few threads and have yet to get an answer.

Well at least in I'm not alone. Maybe it's the way it works on PSN, I hope not though. If someone is using my PS4 I don't really want them playing online under my account. Maybe I'll use one of the week trials to set avatars for other people lol.

I noticed on mine, if I have my satellite box on, if I put my PS4 in standby, it will automatically switch my TV to my satellite feed, which switches out my receiver automatically. It is pretty slick.

Basically by putting my PS4 in standby, it automatically switches me back to watching TV without hitting anything on my remote. The PS3 didn't do this, although it WOULD turn everything on or off for me just by powering on or off the PS3.

Mini-megaton for me. Loved the convenience of PS3 switching on my TV and receiver to the right input. Hated that it didn't put things back how they were when you turn it off. If Ps4 does that, I'll be very happy. Specifically, my wife will be very happy when my kids stop playing games and she doesn't have to piss about with remotes to get it back on the STB input

Not sure if this has been posted yet, but I watched Man of Steel on PS4 last night and before you buy a movie from the store if gives you the option of doing an internet connection speed test. It was a little cool feature.

Multitasking between games and Netflix has been the most next-gen thing I've seen, and I never even expected it. It blew my mind when I went back to Assassin's Creed and was able to pick up where I left off.

I'm going through the BF4 campaign and collecting trophies, I almost got up to check the PC for some info when I remembered the game/app swap (double press on the PS button). this feature really slick, pretty good when looking up info on the game your playing.

We should really make a thread for this stuff and whoever is OP keeps together a list of everything said and group them by priority/request amount.

Loving the PS4 so far. Just a few small gripes.

1) The headset. Seriously?

2) Controller battery life. Too short, they need to be recharged too frequently.

Progressive downloads is awesome feature. I left Killzone to download and was playing Flower and Resogun in the meantime. Way sooner than I expected, maybe just an hour later I get the notification that the game is downloaded. I saw that indeed it has downloaded but only about 7GB of it, and I could already play. The remaining 30GB of the game downloads as you play it, and you never even know it. Best of all, once this first chunk was downloaded, the game started so quickly, it was like launching some mobile game, it just showed the title screen, start campaign, and bam, you're playing.

I know TLOU did this already, but you had to download more like 18GB, which took considerably more time. Plus I was chronically put off trying to play anything while PS3 downloads stuff.

I think horror games could do some really interesting stuff with the controller speaker. Like breath and heartbeat in Amnesia.

Have you used it yet? I thought it was going to be crap but it is surprisingly clear and doesn't pick up much background noise either.

Can someone tell me more about the talking controller? It sounds like a great addition at providing an additional source of sound apart from your normal speakers.

If used correctly, this could be a great feature.

It's great, I love it. In Killzone when you find audio reels telling backstory and that sort of thing, the audio of them plays through the controller speaker instead of your normal speakers.

It's pretty comfy too.

A little thing that bugs me is that extra controllers do NOT come with a charging cable. So dumb.

Also, does anyone know if controllers charge when the system is in Standby and/or Off?

They definitely charge in standby mode, which is great. They also use micro usb cables and not some proprietary cable, so most smart phone usb cables will work too.

I think the controller piping through system audio is the greatest thing ever. The fact that Apple earbuds work is great. I just walk around with them now from my phone to my laptop to my PS4.

Waaait a second... Everyone who has a launch PS4 got this? Is it in my wallet as we speak?

Edit- Found it among the paperwork, which I never bothered to look at.

There was a code for it in the box. It's the same pamphlet that has the free PSN days and the music unlimited thingy.

Negative thing: sending a message to a buddy also sends one to myself on PS3 so anytime I turn it on and think I have a new message, I realize it's my PS4 message from the other night.

Positive thing: upgrading my copy of Ghosts for $10 was awesome. My PS3 version was crippled with lag and the PS4 version is perfect. Very happy with that. I hope more games do it in the future.

I've yet to see the trackpad in use. Is there anything that uses it outside of games? I am not even sure if my works at this point.

After unboxing my system, I plugged the controller into the USB port of my cable box to charge while I set everything up. For some reason, it set the cable box into some sort of weird cycle of powering up and down, DVR hard drive whirling on and off and flashing all the display lights. Unplugged it and box went back to normal after a few moments. Always charged my other controllers through it and never had an issue before.

A few more little things I noticed.

If you send a message to multiple people like say, close friends, you automatically create a chat room. Anyone in the room can rename it so it can be like a catch all type thread for messages between a tight knit group of friends.

When I was sending messages in this manner before I deleted the message itself and it would always say I left the conversation but we just figured out last night that we could create a sort of email like exchange system with pictures, voice messages, and even internet links all in our little chat between me and 3 good friends.

Also, party chat is quite amazing. On top of being able to chat and do anything on PS4. Vita people can join and I had a friend even use his Vita in remote play with his PS4 mic plugged into the Vita mic slot and was able to chat with us in remote play on his Vita. I thought that was an almost inception type feature.

The cool thing is that he could also be in the chat as his username on Vita's party chat and join on PS4 as himself again so in essence he basically could be in the room and have another person talking with a PS4 while the other uses a Vita. It's not a huge deal but still really cool little things I'm discovering.
