First Ryse Review

What? Knack is awful. Just fucking terrible. This looks better graphically, but all the gameplay they show just looks bad to me.

What the heck kind of embargo time is that? I'm not a big conspiracy guy, but yeahhhhhh they're hiding something.

You like Knack, man. You should probably not talk. :P

Really, they seem pretty similar. Games held back by being repetitive and nothing but nearly nonstop combat. Ryse is prettier and has more to the combat, so I'm expecting it to review better though not dramatically so.
Knack does have SOME platforming (if nothing else likely more movement) and sorta has an "easy to play, difficult to master" vibe to it that Cerny wanted to go for with the PS4 hardware itself.

Honestly though, I really want to see the opinions of people that play both games. I'll likely never play Ryse unless they just give it for free with XB1 or whatever when/if I get one, but some in the press will, and the early adopters of both may well get both games.

I own Knack, that game is bad. I've only played a little bit but so far a very linear "platformer" with some very basic brawling with overly harsh damage from enemies.

I think the game looks awesome (i'm a sucker for Rome themed anything) but i just can't tell if the combat will be fun or boring. I'm not expecting DMC level complexity but I at least want to feel like i'm putting some effort into encounters.

A professional outlet is a professional outlet, man. These guys are professionals who get paid to do professional things. I trust anyone who gets paid to do reviews because if they lie or do a bad job that means they get fired.

HAH! If only this were true. SO many gaming "journalists" would be out of a job. I hope this was sarcasm.

Go in the Knack thread and you'd find yourself seeing just how many people extremely liked that game.

My favorite PS4 game with a bullet. I've played it a ton.

I hope Ryse reviews well because it looks cool and I would love for there to be a good game behind the amazing graphics. That said, I don't expect it to do all that well. I'm expecting mostly in the 7/10 range.

That wouldn't change my opinion. It's an awful game. Lifeless. Bland. Blech. It's the game that ultimately pushed me to get a Wii U. Why suffer mediocre mascot games when I can play the best. Fortunately Knack was the free game in the Amazon buy 2 get 1 free sale, but I still feel ripped off. Worst of all, the resell value of two games I got and didnt like (Killzone being the 2nd) fell apart on Amazon, so I can't recoup much cash. I'm just bitter. Was hoping to get 50 for each.

But on topic, are you streaming Xbox One games tonight?

I loved Knack for what it was but yes to each their own. Fair enough. I have to work Friday so I wont be streaming till later that night. :/

I thought the visuals and polish would keep it above a 6 (I'm under no illusion that the gameplay has any depth) but maybe not

I was never counting on this game to be good anyway, but it would've been a nice surprise

I'm routing for Ryse, but the writing is on the wall, and it says stinker. Hope I'm wrong though.

I'm with you there. I want more, better, games obviously, but so far none of the media they've released, and notes from some people who got their hands on it have seemed really good.

Talking of visuals and polish, some areas were really impressive, while others, not so much. And the cutscenes look, for whatever reason, better than the in-game stuff. Still, very, very pretty...

No doubt this went through a rough dev cycle. The Kinect roots, 360 changeover. If they ever do a sequel I hope they start from scratch and build the game from the ground up. It's one of those games you really want to be good. It's what I envision next gen GoW would look like

Good review from Adam, well reasoned. Wondering what the length is which he didn't touch on.

That's true, but I think again it has a similar parallel to Ryse which still has some breakups with the horde of allies to raise shields, man a crossbow, stuff like that. But ultimately they both will fall under being far too repetitive for what you can do.

Have you played Knack?

Nope, but neither have the people ripping Ryse apart. You can take a lot from just the videos of everything, I watched the majority of the Knack video reviews and have been watching streams of it. I can see the appeal of it, much like I can with this, but they both seem heavily flawed.

They don't really seem similar at all. Knack is actually quite challenging and requires pattern recognition in an old school action title way.

Ryse seems like the game just plays itself for you.

The "QTE" stuff is just a finisher and in gameplay practice not dissimilar to batman takedowns or GoW finishers. You still have to wait and punish out moves, the issue will be the lack of variety in pure moveset to sustain this over the length of an entire game. When you have a limited moveset and constant combat throughout a game it's up to the enemy variety to make up for it, and even then there's only so much that can be done with 3-4 combat moves.

Game ain't gonna do so well with reviews. This is one that I would have liked to have been good, but was always counting on it being a disappointment.

I never stopped, I've been watching him for 13 years. Sure, he made a dumb video about why graphics don't matter, big deal.

yeah no big deal, I think I'll like ryse myself I never really listened to the knack reviews either and i love the shit out of that game so I am really excited for tomorrow

I knew after E3 this game would be crap, but aside from it absolutely none of the other titles interest me. Still going to pick it up so I at least have something to play on xbone.
