They do about ~1-2 million units for the big ones, except NetherRealm which does around 3+ and Smash which is generally a globally gigantic franchise.

A pokemon one would do big numbers long term though. That brand has legs and those legs will outlast FGC sales.

Provided it was actually a good fighting game and not a light fandom game, like the Naruto Storm series.

It depends on the game no?

I mean if they don't have something unannounced that fits the Spike audience, they might as well show something announced that does.

Zelda U alone fits that bill though. It's just if Nintendo wants to show it or not? Because we know they could if they wanted. Also I remember the rumours about Human Head developing a game on Wii U.

Human Head or not if they have a game that is even remotely aimed at western audience this would be the place to announce it. Again if it's a new IP it would need to be announced with a lot of publicity and this could be a place to do it.

Hopefully a couple Smash character announcements (one first party, one third party). After that, I'm kinda hoping to see some Bayonetta 2 footage. I'm still angry it wasn't playable at NYCC. That demo reel was so tantalizing.

Agreed with Nirolak. A new trailer for Bayo 2 would seem very appropriate here. Smash would be a good fit, too.

Even though it seems Kirby will be the first "big" 3DS game for 2014, it doesn't seem like a fit for the VGX audience.

Well Zelda U isn't entirely impossible, but I kind of feel that still appeals to the people who knew it was going to happen anyway.

I mean how many potential Wii U customers are there that were thinking "I bet a new Zelda won't come to Wii U."

I'd have to imagine a new IP, an unexpected series return, or a vastly deviated spin-off would be the things that could really drive new customers that wouldn't have otherwise just showed up when the inevitable game that was coming released.

Human Head did the Wii U port of Arkham Origins: http://nintendoeverything.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/batman_arkham_origins_wii_u.jpg

Who are they targeting with Smash? Every fanboy of the series knows it's coming and has been following the Dojo. I don't see why it would be an appropriate outlet for Smash unless they're going to show characters that appeal to a particular group of people such as Snake. Bayo 2 is more likely imo.

Uh, didn't Human Head Studios work on the Wii U port of Batman: Arkham Origins?

Edit: beaten by Nirolak

That Zelda needs to materialize before having a proper effect. People know a Zelda is coming they just can't imagine what it really is. Mainline Zelda alone has been pretty diverse during the years. It's not like the new Halo. I can imagine what that will like. I can't imagine what Zelda U will be like.

Human Head did the Wii U port of Arkham Origins but the rumoured project was for Nintendo. Arkham Origins port wasn't done for Nintendo. It was done for WB Games.

I mean come on does this sound like Arkham Origins port to you?:

Late last year, Human Head/Nine Realms was hiring part-time Japanese translators to translate "project documentation, written correspondence, and live [conversation]," which I could imagine may very well have been in relation to the Nintendo project.

Besides Human Head is just an example. It could be any studio really.

I'm not sure Mario Kart really fits the Spike VGAs audience.

I'm not nessecarily sure it matters all that much. I remember a lot of the games "shown" last year were things we'd already seen, I think Geoff would probably rather have new footage or a new game shown of anything then show off DLC that's already been revealed.

Bayonetta confirmed for smash.

A new Super Mario 3D World trailer.

I don't think they'll announce a brand new title. It's probably a trailer for something we've seen before. I hope I'm wrong though.

I think that Nintendo initially planned big announcements for their January Direct like this year, but decided to bring them to the VGX in which they can reach a bigger audience. Good move.

As many have said, it would make sense to show off Bayonetta 2 & X in front of this audience to promote those games.

Most people already know Smash, Mario Kart, and DK are coming, so there wouldn't be a big benefit to Nintendo in showing those off heavily here as opposed to a Nintendo Direct. Obviously a new Smash character could create buzz depending on who it is.

I'm not sure what else they have in the pipe that's ready to show. Zelda they probably could show but it'd need to just be a short teaser unless that game is far enough along to make 2014/early 2015.

Considering the footage of X we have so far has only been referred to as teasers then it could possibly be a full reveal. Xenoblade was very higly rated and is a definite cult classic. It would be the best thing for the game really.

I do think Smash is more likely though.

Wasn't Miyamoto or someone there in the past, just in case Mario Galaxy 2 or Skyward Sword won anything, or something like that?

When it comes to drawing positive attention towards the Wii U, Zelda U would probably be best. Drawing attention towards a new franchise, X would be best. For sales overall, Smash would probably be best. In my opinion, at least. Got a few interesting ways they could take this.

Isn't this supposed to be like two times longer than what VGA's were last year? Including extended gameplay demos. Probably could have all of them there if they so wanted.

They're 3 hours long and since it's online only they don't have to run commercials unless they want to since I'm sure publishers would be happy to pay for advertising their own goods.

So how does this even work? Are publishers playing Spike to have their products unveiled there? Is Spike actively looking for big reveals to gather interest for the event? Mix of both? Who is paying who?

Split bump.

Assuming he's showing something, I have to imagine it is at least marginally on target for Spike's audience, so I would guess something like Bayonetta 2 or perhaps, though not as likely, X.

Edit: As Mpl90 points out, Smash would be an excellent fit and perhaps the most likely option
.

Smash doesn't deserve to be unveiled at such an event.

Well they might just run commercials anyway. I'm just noting that if they want stream revenue they could always ask the publishers for money if the publishers want more time since this whole event is basically a gigantic advertisement.

Honestly, if its going to be Smash. Hype through the roof! Because things are bound to be shown there with new characters. :D Watch it be Pac-Man.

Edit: I'd be pretty excited for Pokken Fighters.
