Userbase = People who still play on their PS3s.
Maybe not in the west, but in the Japan I am pretty sure the PS3 userbase will still be active for a long time.
Are you new to the Persona series? It is not weird at all. Persona 3 and 4 were both released for the PS2 when the PS3 was already in the market.

But what's more important is which userbase is more active -- ie, more likely to be buying new games. That could be PS4. But I don't see people suggesting they shouldn't release it on PS3 -- I see people saying they should do PS3/PS4/PSV. Sony seems to be improving their policies, so I'd hope they wouldn't turn down P5 for PS4.

This follows a typical pattern for many Japanese niche games, doesn't it? These kinds if games almost never come to a newer platform in the first 12-18 months of its cycle.
Sony hardware is worth hanging onto. I rarely get rid of hardware. Even if I'm not using it I just box it. I'm fortunate to be able to do that, as I don't need to sell stuff to get new stuff.

More on serious note, I agree that changing the formula too much will makes them receive massive backlash, especially if we consider much part of the fandom. But I could only hope that is for gameplay though, not theme or tone of the game.

Persona 3 wasn't released until 06 and P4 in 08. This is just how that operate.
I feared more than I expected something other than the PS3 (and possibly XBox360 multi).

Sony would be sitting on a gold mine if they have Gaikai up and running before this is out in the west.
Of course, but does that mean anything? There are even more Wii and DS sold than PS3. That doesn't mean the game would sell better on those consoles. What truly matters is if the people that own those systems are still buying games for them. God Eater 2 sold better on Vita, despite the difference between PSP and Vita LTD.
Why should Atlus care about Gaikai? They aren't Sony.
I don't think the difference is going to be as big as you may think. Besides, Persona 4 Golden sold very well on a 'dead' handheld. It could have happened again.

Some time ago people were depressed at the idea of a 3DS Persona because it would mean a lack of visual evolution, and there was HUGE arguments over it.
And people are not dissapointed about not being PS4? Come on... if you care about graphics this is the best outcome by far. It was madness to think PS4 could be an option, how long took Atlus to produce a PS2 game? how long it took for a PS3 one?
Man, just thinking a Persona with Catherine graphics makes me smile. Such a great day, I would have gladly taken a Persona 5 in whatever console, but PS3 makes me extra happy, hoping they manage a great cel shading.

Persona is getting four games for three different platforms in three different genres. They are milking the brand for all it's worth ,witch I personally don't mind if it guarantees more mainline games. A port of P5 for whatever viable platform seems very likely.They are probably just waiting for PS4 to have more users to release the Crimson version.

Theo is there, even Marie is there... But no signs of Hamuko Yeah, changing the tone of the game wouldn't be a bad idea. Removing Social Links and the date sim aspect, on other hand, would drive a huge part of the fandom mad. I personally would love to see the date sim aspect in a more serious game

That could be PS4, but i think it depends on PS4 JRPG ecosystem.
Persona audience is JRPG audience. It doesn't really matter if PS4 has more active userbase overall by 2015 if majority of it is just full of cod crowd which unlikely to buy this game. It's safer to announce the game for PS3 so their actual audience can hanging on their PS3 they already own, rather than announce it for PS4 and just hope for the best that half of their audience have the money and resolve to buy PS4.
As for cross-gen thing, Atlus surely not big enough to do this simultaneously? It is more likely if they port it later on. Look at P4Golden.

Knew it would be PS3. Just like last last gen we will get a jrpg surge in the final years. Niche industry that struggle is going for the deeper userbase with mature, cheaper development tools. Thats why im not jumping into next gen yet, missed out last gen by doing that. This time i will wait it with some PERSONA!
