Persona 5 announced for PS3, winter 2014

This is sad for people who bought the Vita to play Persona. I know some people who bought the entire collection on the platform just expecting this to be out on the Vita... Well, I guess it'll come there eventually...

When are the 2014 Winter Olympics?

Both P3 and P4 were 1st announced in March and then released in July. So, if you use that time for main line games, it makes sense for a JP release sooner than later. Of course, it could be a cultural time issue and I could be wrong! but we'll see. Fortunately, time answers all these questions lol but, for it to release in winter 2014 in Japan, it would have to come out in the last week of December and that makes no sense.

Or.....and maybe I am crazy here, they are just using the word winter to mean the cold months near the end of the year so they could release it whenever they damn well please on or after October.

I can't help but laugh at the people posting that winter runs precisely from 12/21/2014 to 3/19/2015 and saying the game must be releasing in that window. I understand when the astronomical winter is but let's be real. People consider november and the beginning of december to be winter and march and even some of february for some people is already spring.

I really need to play P4. I bought it day 1, then wanted to play through P3 FES first, and then... yup, never finished P4.

Even if I don't though, P5 day 1. Yup.

This feels like such a non-announcement. Teaser doesn't really show anything, and no info on how the game is. We've already known p5 was being made for years now. I miss 15 min+ trailer announcements through Famitsu.

Is anyone else getting a delinquent school vibe from the teaser? Could make for some interesting social dynamics and less virginal "S-senpai..." shenanigans.

I know. I feel sad. I've only ever played Persona on a handheld in bed at night. I don't know if I can do it on a couch in front of a TV....

Holy crap, as I type it out I realize this is a lame problem for me to have. But it's still causing me much distress.

I didn't know games were announced and released within such a short time span.

Super cool if you're a fan though, and anyone saying PS3 isn't current gen is wrong.

LOL

I can't stop doing that anymore than Naoto can stop being the hottest girl in P4.

Opinions are great but sometimes they are just wrong. :P

Hmm, I didn't even think of that. It actually sounds pretty good, my only issue would be that there would be way too many characters like Kanji but without all of the background things that actually make Kanji awesome.

Edit: Oh hello double post, the thread must be slowing down.

Why exactly would you or anyone else expect a series like Persona to stop being heavily anime influenced? Do you think Atlus is out of their damn mind? If they were willing to move this game back to the PS3 because it's safe, then there's no way in hell they're moving away from what made the series as popular as it is today.

I'm kidding because I know Atlus isn't about to turn down that otaku money (rhythm game? well, whatever).

But I would like a lean in a more serious direction...perhaps a somewhat serious anime?

If the anime is like Mushishi, LoGH, or Mononoke (no, not the Ghibli movie) I certainly welcome it with open arm.

Exactly.

So what are you theories on the themes and setting of the new game based on what little we know so far?
For some reason I'm getting a Dangan Ropna vibe (FYI I've yet to play the series but know a little about its concept).

Strict School?
I mean all the school in persona loose as fuck

Persona 4 was designed to be made into TV show from the get-go.
There's absolutely no way P5 wouldn't follow the same path.

From the get go? How you could be so sure? P4 got its adaptation after 4 years of it release. The nature of the game itself packed with so much content. It was proved by the anime adaptation by severely changing some social link intereaction. I know that P4 is more streamlined in nearly everything, but suspecting Atlus designed to be an anime is baseless accusation as there are no evidence for that.

But given how popular P4 is, there absolutely nothing that stop Atlus to going down that path though with P5......
Lets just hope they keep the milking with P4, and let us have our college-life Persona with p5.

Too much to wait :/ The english localization could be ready as late as fall 2015.....
Too little reveiled :/ :/
In 2015 I will have to connect my PS3 to the TV just for this game basically....so I hope that in the future ports for PS4 and/or Vita are announced.

Not trying to port beg or anything, but is there going to be a 360 version in the West? My PS3 is on the fritz and it definitely won't last till 2014/2015. If there won't be I'm gonna pick up one during the upcoming sales.

Didn't SMT IV come out within like a month or two of the Japanese release? Why would Atlus not do the same here, knowing how popular Persona is over here?

There is no way.

Considering the clusterfuck that was Persona 4: Arena and every Atlus game since being delayed heavily in Europe I highly doubt we will see this over here. Hopefully no PS3 region lock like Persona 4: Arena.

Isn't this game has been on full production since 2011? If so, then it is not outside realm of possibility to release it sooner rather than later. It's not like development of the game is still premature or anything.

It's about damn time.

I want at least college-age characters and a grimdark storyline.

Sue me, I don't give a fuck. THE ANIME STOPS HERE

P4 got anime adaptation not too long ago. If anything, they're embracing anime audience.

Odds are 0% IMO. We have a better chance of getting a PS4 or Vita simultaneous release and I would say the odds of that are also near 0.

To me, it sounds like it was a Vita or Wii U game (with 90% the former), but when they saw these things crashing and burning, they went back to PS3.

I don't know how it could have been a PS4, since nothing changed there. Same for 3DS -- sales in the West are below expectations, but far from panic inducing.

This assumes a situation without interference from platform holders.
If it was Vita, I don't see why they would change their mind, P4G sold well enough for a port and by that time they already knew the Vita situation, Wii U is out of the equation, PS4 isn't even released yet and for a series like Persona, it wouldn't make any sense to even approach that idea. 3DS is a possibility but without any Persona released for it, that also doesn't make sense. A platform change no matter which one makes absolutely no sense given the circumstances. I think the most likely case is that development stalled due to Atlus' financial situation and so rumours that spread were more wild than usual, a platform change was probably on the cards, but beyond the boardroom talk I doubt any actually took place.

It's almost like they reconsidered their decision at some point when looking at facts like this.

...Nah, you're right, nothing like that could ever happen.
If you wanna believe any shit thats thrown your way, then by all means be my guest.

I'm really happy with the tone of the trailer. This is a complete long shot, but perhaps "emancipation" refers to the promise of an exciting life by way of fighting shadows. Maybe the cast of P5 will be a group of people who are tired of their lives and see summoning their Personas and fighting as emancipation from the mundane. They could get pretty meta with this and go into themes about escapism (this would be hilarious, considering P4's fanbase), entertainment/mass media, etc etc. I dunno, just a shot in the dark.

I think not releasing on both PS3/PS4, or just PS4, is a mistake. I guess I can look forward to playing the enhanced version in 2015 anyways.

If you honestly do not think that there will be a P5 golden or some other spinoff a year later or less, then you have not been paying attention for the past five to ten years in the gaming world.

A highschool setting shouldn't be a issue. Highschool in Persona 4 felt pretty tame for the most part, although that might just be my perception or a cultural difference between Japan and North America. Persona 4 also took place in the "country" side. The environment and such can be much darker and lewd in Persona 5 based on where it takes place.

Highschool in North America can be some dingy, wicked shit. It would be nice as well if more of the characters in Persona 5 have more down to earth family structure, a lot of the Persona 4 cast had rich parents that owned a business. The Dojima family and the dynamics involved were incredibly captivating.

P4 actually dealt with this exact subject. It wasn't the main focus, but it was brought up multiple times.

But they did that with persona 2. Though persona 2 was also red.... Wait what if this is a stealth Persona 2 remake?
Conspiracy!!!

By winter 2014 I am assuming that they are banking on Gakai being in place on the PS4, or that it will be an easy up port at that point.

Oh okay. I just thought since there was P4: A and Catherine on two platforms Altus might've made a multiplatform release in the west or something.

Guess I gotta get a PS3.

I hope the setting announced ASAP, so westerner that don't want high school location can GTFO already.
Platform warz already gone (kinda, we into port begging now) now just this to be sorted out.

I know its just stating wish but its very unlikely to begin with, so its such a chore..

Nope.

A bit disappointed that there's no Vita version, but happy it got announced nonetheless. I'm looking forward to more info about it!

Plus I have the silly dancing game on Vita as a consolation prize, so I guess that counts for something.

So...Yukiko?
