Are you satisfied with the graphics NIntendo has been able to produce on Wii U?

You know I never really thought about this comparison until now. Just as an example, would be this:

Ryse: $500 meal cooked by a gourmet chef. It tastes good, you know its made with fine ingredients and quality

Super Mario 3D World: $300 meal cooked by your parents. It doesn't look as good as the Ryse meal but boy oh boy does it taste better and your parents know what you like

(And yes, I'm hungry right now hehe)

Entirely satisfied, yes. I've said it before and I'll say it again - I harbour a hopeless dream of Wii U becoming the new home of mid-tier, where games aren't expected to be cutting edge shiny and can focus on other areas once the visuals have reached a certain level of basic competence. It'll never happen, but god it would be glorious.

Pikmin 3 is a bad example. They started developing it on Wii. I'm just saying that if we're doing it like this then I would like to see what are the most impressive games on PS3 and 360 that achieve stable 60FPS. Usually when people mention graphically impressive games on those platforms they talk about Naughty Dog's titles or GTA V. The thing is that they don't even achieve half the framerate so the comparision isn't very good at all.

Plus, Gta5 is a bad example as it is at the end of the console lifespan, therefore better optimised. Look at Gta4. It was a giant jaggy party with super ugly shadows and shit frame rate. I liked the game but kinda wished i coul play with my eyes closed sometimes.

Mario, by contrast, is fairly crisp and runs like butter (and also has better lighting and shadows that any gta ever.)

Don't get me wrong though Ryse and KZ are doing far more impressive things from a tech perspective but I think that Edge review was right on when it said if were're judging visuals by what came before to what we have now the Wii U is proving to be the biggest leap this holiday and I think that is true. KZ:SF and Ryse are amazing but not a huge leap to me. Mario 3D world looks like a generational leap for Nintendo. Of course it helps that the last Mario games looked like they were made for the iPad but its still very impressive.
that's a stupid way to judge graphics and sounds like poor justification made by someone with a bias for nintendo
the wii U doesn't exist in a vacuum why is everyone so fast to remind people that the wii U is next gen but when the discussion comes to graphical power people go "well it looks a lot better than the wii did!"
you don't get to have it both ways, the wii u is part of the 8th gen and thus the games should be compared from a graphical stand point to games for the xbone and ps4

Not got one myself but footage of Wind Waker, Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Pikmin 3 and from the levels with the nice lighting it's also obviously nice in SM3DW.

I'd say they did a good job. Should get better too. Probably smart to go with GPU over CPU, especially for their titles, which is why anyone will buy a Wii U.

You can have all the power you want, but Nintendo proved once more with 3DWorld that art direction will trump everything when it comes to visuals.

I get the feeling the lighting has something to do with it as well. Really helps in Tearaway too - adds so much to these sorts of visuals.

Yes. The Wii U has the best looking graphics out there right now and it's not even close. 3D World, Pikmin 3, WW HD, W101, etc.

The system is just great too. People love to hate on it but they don't know what they are missing. Many fantastic games already. Off-TV play is awesome. Games aren't littered with insulting micro-transactions. What's not to like?

In a side by side comparison, wiiu is adequate, but that's a matter of personal judgment. Games certainly look good enough for me but of course not everyone will echo that sentiment. So far, my ps4 has disappointed me more from a graphical standpoint, but I know that'll change with time.

Satisfied. Just got the PS4 and Xbox One and it's really only Battlefield 4 that I think the Wii U would have to scale down a bit. Of course it can't do the complexity or scale of Dead Rising 3 or Ryse, but ZombiU has way more atmosphere in lighting alone than any next-gen launch title, and Super Mario 3D World looks better than any comparable title for next-gen.

Absolutely. Fun is not measured in teraflops.

For the past year or so, I've grown tired of all the brown, gray, serious, overdramatic "games" on the HD twins and yearned more for the light, bright, colorful worlds of Nintendo.

They do my heart good.

Ugh. I don't understand why some people feel the need to shit on other platforms/artstyles in an attempt to justify their preferences, especially when you're comparing against misinformed stereotypes. I can't remember the last time I played a "brown, gray, overdramatic 'game' " on any platform. In fact, my favorite PS4 exclusive by far is Resogun. You know, bright, light, colorful, pure-fun arcade shooter.

I'am as satisfied with Nintendo graphics on the WiiU as much as i'am satisfied with the graphics from MS and Sony on 360+ PS3.

When you've been playing on 360/ps3 for the past 7 years the WiiU graphics arnt good enough for an gen 8 console.

Pikmin 3 looks ghastly in screenshots, but absolutely beautiful in motion. The impact that the depth of field and lighting has on the look of that game completely negates the flat geometry and occasionally low-res textures. Dat water, too.

Pikmin 3/Most Wanted U were the first times I've been genuinely impressed by a game's graphics since Uncharted 2.

In my opinion, there are two ways to answer this question.

If you compare the graphics on the Wii U to anything on the Xbox One or the Playstation 4, then there is enough room for people to bash the Wii U for days to come. Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate and Pikmin display some rough textures here and there, and polygon count is quite disappointing if you compare both to, let's say, Ryse.

But that wouldn't be fair. I believe people should look at Wii U games for what they *can* offer, instead of looking for what they can't. I would never dare to compare Double Dragon on the Atari 2600 to the NES version. The comparison wouldn't be fitting, even though we're talking about the "same" game. Now, if one looks at Double Dragon on the Atari 2600 for what it actually is, then the focus would be "wow, they pulled this game off on this system (sort of)" instead of "it looks crap when compared to the NES version".

Games on the Wii U usually look good. The graphics are good enough so they don't compromise the experience. There is no need to demand realistic water effects when the game is not aiming to be realistic at all. Just have fun for what it is and enjoy what we have gotten so far.

Depth of field?

I love that personally.

I ALWAYS turn off depth of field when I'm playing PC games.
Consoles really need graphic option menu's so I can turn off annoying effects like depth of field, or turn off bloom on games that use way too much bloom.

Actually, I find Resogun's color palette to be really drab. It's an alright game but I was surprisingly disappointed with how out looked

Lighting is outstanding. However, some aspects (like texture tiling and poly count/AA) haven't impressed me so far. There's still so much room for improvement, and there's more to come yet so I reserve my judgement, but so far it's pretty good.

SM3DW makes my jaw drop until I notice the low samples and AA in places. I bet it looks much better in motion though.

I want them to do both before I invest heavily in their system.

What else can I expect? Larger tiles so they're not so bleeding obvious!

Plenty of games have more impressive water, and have done for several years. I'm not saying the game isn't fun, or even that it looks bad, I'm just saying that the water is quite unimpressive.

Here's a shot that shows the issue in a more apparent manner. Just look at how obvious those lines are. I think Sunshine had more impressive water, honestly.

By Zeus' beard, you're right! Man...

SM3DW looks great, but in terms of art direction, it feels like a step back from SMG.

Wow, so now realistic graphics weren't possible last gen. Although WiiU has more memory, a modern GPU with higher efficiency. Much more bandwidth coming from its eDRAM. SM3DW looks stunning, but the only reason this in stores is because of its design and not creating these huge environments. There's no doubt in my mine that if Nintendo took SM64 route we'll still be waiting for something from them.

The only thing possible WiiU now is great art style.

Citation needed. The source that said 160 shaders/8TMUs/8ROPs also said ~30GB/s eDRAM bandwidth.

Personally? No.

I think that will change depending on where they go with Zelda (especially if they go in a direction that looks like the tech demo they showed). And I think when they reveal X, or show more Bayonetta 2, then I'll be content.

As it is now, the art is well done (as usual), but the games are too 'empty' for me. Though they still look clean and beautiful. In particular Mario. Ignoring NSMBU, I just don't get excited about what I see in 3D World.

I'm sure it's going to be super fun to play when I get my Wii U next year, but I don't see anything that makes me go "wow". Like when I first played Sunshine, dat water... or when I played Galaxy for the first time.

It just comes off as very 'safe', but I feel that about 99% of Nintendo's games now.

I don't need forests in Mario, where you can barely move, but it'd be nice to have more to it. It feel so empty.

After W101 and Sonic Lost World, and with what Mario 3DW and future games look like, very satisfied so far. I don't think the art style used in those games will be often attempted on PS4/X1, so I'm happy the WiiU has games that will have it.

I am satisfied because I buy Nintendo home consoles for Nintendo exclusives. Everything that Nintendo is putting out looks great. That's enough for me.

If I were trying to make this my main console for multi platform titles I wouldn't be.

Dunno if this is gonna make sense but....

Nintendo HD games like the new mario look as good or better than games like bf4, even though bf4 is clearly technically superior. To me anyway.

Maybe it is the vibrant colors.

Only certain games...

Smash looks amazing as does Super Mario 3D.

The ports on the other hand look awful.

It's a matter of doing something that doesn't make it apparent that your console is underpowered.

Like Mario/Smash's art style. Not only is it very good to look at, but it's used in such a way that it doesn't seem limited by the Wii U.

ozfunghi brought it up in the next gen piccy thread, but a few of the visual effects Nintendo is using in 3DWorld seem to be more function over form.

The shadow directly underneath you to show positioning, the excessive rim lighting to outline player characters, and the DoF to show focus on the game world (while "hiding" some of the less impressive aspects).

I think their stuff looks great, Definitely a drastic departure from the PS3/360 norm, and in some ways less impressive than the visual styling of say Viva Pinata.

I've seen this sentiment expressed around here recently and I'm really confused, couldn't this be applied to any game on any hardware?
Especially the modern console.

Impressive in their own rights but lacking in comparison to what exists. You can build a rig a generation more powerful than the PS4 today if visuals are your focus. Consoles are a good compromise on price and power. But still a compromise all the same.

I've been satisfied by graphics for the past two generations. :-\ I am impressed when I see good graphics, but I'm fine working with stuff that makes others' eyes bleed.

Absolutely not. Nintendo is lost in the console world. As someone who used to be a major Nintendo fan, I understand those who say graphics aren't everything but the fact is there are so many good games out on real consoles, that are just as good as Mario or what not, and just as high quality.

Ask me again when Zelda U is announced.

If I was made to comment on things as they are now, I would say that Mario 3D is seriously impressive, as is Mario Kart 8. Good image quality does wonders. But SSB has, sadly, underwhelmed me in every shot I've seen. Maybe my hype for that game will pick back up when they start announcing more characters...

Flop.

I'm satisfied, but then again I'm totally satisfied with the N64 even today

To be honest, I don't really give a shit.
