That is really unlikely, considering the US Gamestop-only, limited run-only shenanigans. Japanese numbers are at 140k, while rounding up to 200k for both US and Japan seems fair, if a bit generous. The game didn't do all that fantastically in Europe either, in part because of early supply constraints. Last update was 50.000-ish in France last year, and that's the strongest market for this kind of game, so 400k WW might be close.
I'll be uselessly stuborn and bring up the fact that Ni No Kuni sold something like 800k-900k on PS3 if we take into account the official 1.400k units sold for the franchise - 500k-600k japanese 3DS versions. The market can produce 800k WW sales for a JRPG.

But for Xenoblade's actual sales, sure, it's just wishful thinking on my end. And anecdotal evidence of every friend that likes the genre having bought it.

After all that and the ,,surprise'' has already been leaked. (Donkey Kong trailer starring new character) lol
Well, if it's even that. Maybe Reggie just accepts the award for best handheld game and leaves.
Nintendo fans will be very cranky if that rumor is true. That's even worse than Mii for Smash Bros.

For something that came out near the end of the Wii's life time, with little advertisement, and sold exclusively at Gamestop, I would say that's pretty decent. Japan numbers are pretty low though if that's the confirmed ltd in Japan.

You believe the WiiU is capable of having the largest open world game, over the PS4 or XB1?

To be fair, size in an open world game isn't bound by technical limitations. Officially, The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall has the "largest open world" in all of gaming, and that came out in 1996.

It's a matter of how much content the developers are willing and able to create for their game.

Shipped, and not everyone has commisioned cutscenes and an OST to deceive people into hyping TEH GHIBLI RPG :P Still, sure, who knows how much better it could have sold with a normal US release, and a less staggered western release in general. That's something they can easily solve with X, but on the other hand, Wii U, so we'll see.

It is. If anything the only problem would be the toll on their translating workforce and whether it's preventing the release of other games. It's probably safe to say that FE12 got axed in order to get Xenoblade and the others out, but NoE do seem to be making an excellent effort overall given all the text heavy stuff they've had to deal with recently.

How many hours before Reggie's back on NoA Twitter account?

It sold more than that, what's your source for bringing up a 500k figure? That game had high enough demand to warrant a reprint a few month ago. If the developpement was smartly budgeted it might even made a bit of profit.

Some people knew SF1 at the time and even put enough money in it to warrant ports.

And you're wrong on what happened with FFXIII, it sold well. FFXIII-2 less so but it ate less money to be made. They clearly made LR on a budget to ensure its profitability.

Your expectations are just cray cray, buddy.
You are right i have not counted the reprint but at least for the first print i don't think the numbers are that off. I don't have numbers in hand right now though, hopefully some sales data fellow can come and post hard data.

I am sure that SE had well other expectations for the FFXIII series and yet they made 3 titles out of it (should i count Agito too?)

I don't think my expectation are crazy, i think that they are very normal counting how much Nintendo had sold last gen and knowing that they know (sorry for the word play) that they have to expand their portfolio to sustain their console alone since there will be no third parties in the near-mid term future.
Mario/Zelda/Metroid is a really big range of importance.

I'm always talking internally though, the importance that the developers team give to the game.

SSB? No, SSB is suited mainly for a the core Nintendo fans. Mario Kart? lol...Bayonetta 2? Maybe but it won't turn heads after the first one barely did. That leaves Zelda and X as the only good choices. Focusing on X's multiplayer aspect is key.

Yes, SSB. Whether you like it or not, whether you acknowledge it or not, SSB is a franchise that extends far beyond the core Nintendo fan base. You're free to believe what you want, but I'm done debating this.

You're comparing it to jRPGs that follow the same trend in almost every iteration, which it's not.

I'm not doing anything of the sort, trust me. I'm just not deluded into thinking transforming mechs, dinosaurs, a real-time battle system, and multiplayer in a JRPG are remotely enough to wow this audience.

I think the best thing about Nintendo being at the VGX is that they might do an actual E3 press conference next year. Maybe they've realized they need to get out a little more.

Yet you believe Smash will wow this audience...lol. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree, but I firmly believe X is a more suitable candidate. Multiplayer RPG that's practically a new IP in their eyes sounds far more appealing the SSB. What's wrong with mechs? TitanFall will probably do well and it's pretty much a mech game. I'm not sure where you're getting the idea that Smash turns heads from because it certainly doesn't turn as many heads of non-core Nintendo fans as you would like to think. They're better taking a chance with a multiplayer RPG or Zelda.

VGX really doesn't seem like the right place for a JRPG. The audience is mostly college-age gamers who are more invested in action-heavy games like CoD, Battlefield, and the like. X isn't going to look appealing to them - Smash on the other hand, is instantly recognizable. If they can confirm a date, and show off at least 1 new character that interests them (maybe Snake, maybe Bayonetta, etc.) - that's a great peice of promotion.
Additionally, I'd expect a Bayonetta 2 trailer. That game also could win some fans at this show, especially if they announce the arguably-necessary port of Bayonetta 1 for WiiU.

I'm not arguing that they won't show Smash Bros. I'm arguing that it probably isn't the best game to show off for a system in need of sales. My issue with Smash being shown is that it's a wasted opportunity to display new games or show off the next installment in The Legend of Zelda series. The reason I believe X is more suitable is because it's an RPG with multiplayer aspect. A lot of college gamers love multiplayer RPGs. It is a jRPG, but it's much different from the usual Final Fantasy and Tales of games. The thing about Smash Bros is that everyone (not everyone but most people) knows what it is already. It's a stable IP. It's an IP that requires only one console and one copy to play with friends. They're better off showing X or Zelda in that case. Bayonetta 2 is also plausible like I first mentioned in this thread but I doubt it will really turn any heads. It will probably spark a few more hate messages directed towards Platinum Games.

But how much of this audience is actively aware there's a kickass HD smash coming out in less than a year?

X will turn heads but ultimately not push sales since it won't get the future marketing support smash will. In a sane world they'd show all three I guess.

If they're core gamers or any gaming news outlet then they know Smash Bros Wii U exists. How many will care enough to purchase a Wii U is the ultimate question.

Honestly, I'm indifferent about what they decide to show. I just think X deserves a bit more exposure and this would be the perfect opportunity to display X. If anything, they should show off multiple trailers rather than just one. That's if they plan on showing trailers. We still have no idea what Reggie is going to do. Could just be a Wii U pitch.

reggie will come on stage and show smash then say wait a minute a new challanger approaching the person from X then after show the story trailer, and then after that he says wait there is one more thing! and shows a new metroid game like prime all with 2014 release dates.

this is how i want it to be :(

With Nintendo sticking with 9 million projected Wii U sales by the end of March, I would expect this to be something huge to help Wii U sales now (December) and keep them going after the holiday season.

What would be huge?
A Smash Bros. Wii U release in January? I would imagine that would move a significant number of Wii U units this holiday season.
Maybe Bayonetta 2 in January (when did development start on this?), and him announcing Smash releasing in March?

I just don't see Bayonetta 2 moving many Wii U units, compared to Smash.

If it's nothing HUGE, with some big January release to help spur more holiday sales, I don't see how they hit that 9 million.

BUT, being that you look at VGX's GOTY list, all of them but ONE are rated "MATURE".
Knowing the audience tends to lean toward those type of games, I would imagine Bayonetta 2 news at the least; but I honestly have no idea.

For all I know, he goes out to demo Wii Fit U live with help from Cammie Dunaway as the big surprise.

I think it will be a casual game in the vein of Wii Sports and the other ones from Wii. But honestly I would love if Nintendo announced Metroid for both Wii U and 3DS

I don't think we're going to see Bayonetta 2 released in January. Kamiya said a week or so ago that they could port the first game before the sequel is out which would mean around 6 months. We'll see Bayonetta 2 in April or May I reckon, and the first game ported the month before.

It has to be something big otherwise the forecasts of both Iwata and Patcher make no sense at all. Patcher obviously knows what it is and reckons it's going to sell 6.5m consoles before the end of the financial year.
